The 21 day mark does NOT start when you filed, it starts on the 28th for EVERYBODY since this is the first eligible day for returns being processed…you could have filed January 10th, it does not matter…the clock does not start until January 28th!

You can read it right in the IRS website, 21 days from the date the IRS accepts your return. Now as far as the agents you are calling, most of them are temporary seasonal employees that do not honestly know, other than what they have been scripted to say. Most, especially this year due to the shut down, do not get sufficient training :/

Yes, Timothy is right and that’s what the IRS told me, the 21 day mark starts on opening tax filing day which was January 28th. Not when it was accepted. The accepted date is just something the IRS website will show, that doesn’t mean that an actual IRS human being was working on your refund.

There were numerous people that were accepted around 1/15 (I even had a few friends that filed and were accepted on the 1/17) that still haven’t received their return and have gotten the 9001 code. WMR has not updated for them. However, a friend of mine that was accepted on 1/15 called the IRS to inquire because it had been 21 days for them about a week ago, and they were able to help him because the 21 days had passed.

No… @Phoenix was right. The 21 day mark starts when the IRS sends you a message saying you “were accepted.” There were quite a few people this year that were accepted before 1/28 because they were in the “test batch.” There were actually two test batches done so it actually has to do whenever you get the message saying that your tax return was accepted.

                    Phoenix:

everyone starts on the 28th this year because that’s when the IRS opened and started processing returns

Nope! It always starts on the day you are accepted. Been like that every year since I have filed. Last year was accepted on the 28th of January. Did not bother calling them till the 18th because it was my 21 days. Had to do an ID verify and on the 23rd of Feb received my refund. That is just lies they tell anyone that calls before 21 days because they are too busy trying to process all our returns. Plus everyone with the PATH message with no error codes gets a DDD a few days from the EXPECTED DDD. If you have any errors call on the 21st day if nothing has changed and they will ask you questions and have you verify all your w2 info and past year AGI. Once you do that they release it and BAM $$$ in 3-5 days depending on your bank. If you have a major code that requires you to receive a letter and it doesn’t come call a tax advocate. Speaking from experience. Had to go through this 2 years in a row.
