Why do I get the CTC and the ACTC? Whe not just the CTC?

Sorry for my ignorance, but can someone explain why I couldn’t just claim the CTC? I thought the CTC was $1000 per child. We have 6 children and together the CTC and the ACTC equal $6000. Why not just the CTC?

      Thanks!

Sorry @Lachingona1, I forgot to actually answer your question.

You probably qualify for the ACTC because you didn’t earn enough income to qualify for the entire CTC. The ACTC will cover the difference.

            No, @Brittany.

The “additional” part refers to the credit, not to the child. It’s not for an “additional child”; it’s an “additional credit.”

You could have 17 kids, it makes no difference. You qualify for the ACTC when you don’t qualify for the entire CTC (if you didn’t earn enough income).

I have 4 kids and I don’t get the actc credit so that’s not true. If you have $6000 in ctc and $6000 in actc then it’s just another extra bonus you could say. But if you don’t have it under both then it’s just the ctc.

Because the CTC is one child while ACTC is any child after the first so you have both.
