Seems a lot of people want to know but aren’t getting answers. For some it’s because there is a legitimate error. But for a lot of us, the only error is on the IRS end and our returns were sent to ERS in error.
It seems to me there is an obvious glitch on these millions of returns being sent to ERS that don’t actually have errors. The IRS was able to handle and accept the initial filing of the returns, that’s why they all were confirmed as “accepted”. The failure is some common entry or way the computer is reading something on a form that is causing these to be sent to ERS. Obviously not everyone has this common denominator because some returns have processed in the usual timeframe.
The ERS system can only process so many (400,000) on the server. Anything over that gets sent to overflow until there’s room for it. Returns in overflow don’t show on the main possessing server. This explains the message on account transcripts that no return is on file when we all were already accepted.
I don’t know if the majority of new filers are getting their refunds as usual or if the delays will continue for them. But for those who filed early and thru at least the first week, some processed normally, but many were sent to ERS that shouldn’t have and this created the backlog. Luckily, those returns are slowly starting to process as room on the ERS servers become available.
The IRS could avoid adding a lot of stress to taxpayers by just keeping us informed of what’s really happening. To call and be told your file is in errors, that they don’t know why, but wait 10 weeks with no further explanation is going to cause unnecessary worry and panic. So, wanting the issue fixed, and because we need our refunds, we are reaching out to tax advocates and congressmen (and women :) for help. That’s backing those departments up. And so on.
All of this could be avoided if:
1. The IRS immediately informed taxpayers that there is an issue and that they are aware of it. This could easily be done by making sure WMR displayed ACCURATE and up-to-date information.
2. Don’t keep allowing returns to process the same way until they fix the problem knowing ERS can’t process the volume effectively. It seems if you have code 900 or 100, these are codes specific to ERS and just mean your file is waiting to be processed (because the server is full). These codes seem to indicate you likely were sent to ERS by mistake. How long your return will sit waiting to be processed in ERS all depends on your place in “line” and ERS having room on the server to process it.
Others are seeing holds to confirm EITC or other credits, or for math errors and other legitimate issues that need to be verified or corrected. This is something that would occur on any given year. But this is taking longer because the system is backlogged with files that should have never been sent to ERS to begin with.
I’m beyond frustrated at this point. Because I didn’t update this week, I have no choice but to wait yet another week at least. The stress all this is putting on undeserving taxpayers is shameful at best, especially given the challenges the pandemic created.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The IRS however, IS broken, so FIX IT. Until that happens, we have to just try and help each other out by sharing our experiences and answering questions that we can.
