I have a helpful tip when people call the IRS inquiring about their refund.

My tip so you don’t get hung up on or get a generic response is to be kind. I called just a short while ago and the IRS agent I had, Tim, initially sounded cranky (I would too if I had his job. So instead of demanding information I started off by telling him my first and last name and then sincerely thanked him for what he does at his job and how I wouldn’t be able to do his job. He was genuinely grateful for me being kind. He looked up my account with no questions asked, not once did he give me a generic response to me inquiring about it being past the 21 days… He even tried his best to help me figure out a way to be able to create an online account because my account numbers to verify do not work. He told me it was a nice break from all the unpleasant callers and thanked me for being a kind person.

The IRS agents are not holding your refund, it is the IRS as an entity… Do not blame the agents, they are just doing their job.

Tim did tell me nothing was wrong with my return, no bad codes, no notices sent to me and told me I should be seeing my deposit in the next 10 days or so.

So, please be kind to them if you call! It will get you a lot more information than if you are rude. I want and need my refund as much as you all do… But being angry about it will not change anything!

Thank you all and I hope we all get our DDD soon!

I beg to differ… No need to bring negativity to this post. All the other threads have negativity and yours would be welcome there

You didn’t “Talk to an IRS Agent”. These are entry level call center folks who take your info, put you on hold only to look up a generic answer to your question. They are Paid to get you off the phone as quickly as they can. You won’t get to talk to a real agent until after Several 45 Day wait periods have begun, and after the ID Verification stuff has hit or if you Finally qualify for a Tax Advocate, who (go figure) is a completely different part of the IRS.

Thank you! I work at a call center, and I can verify that if a customer calls in all angry and yelling, I’m more likely not to be as helpful, not because I don’t want to be, just because it’s stressful listening to someone getting mad over something you have no control over. Customers who are pleasant and kind are MUCH more likely to get what they need!

Very true. Its sad but there is no reason you should not be treating everyone in this kind manner. The person your talking to is typically not the person who is causing your issue, its there employer policy that is. Well said @jessica
