Im in the process to file my taxes. Something seems off. This is the first year i get to claim the kids by myself. My exhusband made well over 40k paid about 1k into taxes and always got a nice refund. I work as a 1099 misc worker and made just a little over 20k. Yet im supposed to pay back to the IRS? given, in a 1099 you dont pay in over the year but that seems a little over the top. What am i overlooking here? Is this correct?

Sounds correct if you are just claiming the children and 1099 did you include all of your expenses ??

You need to do a Schedule C and try to claim some deductions if you can. If you use a home office you can take that and if you do delivery you can deduct mileage. If you happen to drive for Uber you can use Turbo Tax Self Employed for free from a computer if you log in to the website.
