      Refund Status Results

According to the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act, the IRS cannot issue refunds before February 15 for tax returns that claim the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit. This applies to the entire refund, even the portion not associated with these credits.
Check Where’s My Refund after February 15 for your personalized refund status. It’s updated once a day and remains the best way to check the status of your refund.

“Path Act” is the new tax law that is put into place to prevent ID theft. It is a way to prevent false tax filers from claiming false dependents, or ID theft for tax fraud. It allows the IRS to hold the refunds from release until after most legitimate tax filers have filed and claimed the credits, and if the others file and the credits are not legit, they are audited and denied the refunds. This rule applies to those who claim the EITC and ACTC.

PATH Act is basically an attempt by the IRS to control fraud. The idea behind it is, that most fraud occurs with early filers, particularly on returns with either or both EITC or ACTC credits and identity theft. The IRS feels this will deter people from committing fraud if they know they can’t receive and spend the money before A) they get caught or B) the person who had the ID stole does their tax return.
