My return had been processing but popped 1541 on Sunday. Called number and they said there is just an overflow of returns and mine looks fine but no refund for another two weeks at least.

Per IRS.gov website….. By law, the IRS cannot release tax refunds for Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit related tax returns before mid-February. “Where’s My Refund?” will be updated by Feb. 23 for most early filers who claimed the EITC or ACTC. These taxpayers will not see a refund date on “Where’s My Refund?” or through their software packages until then. The earliest EITC and ACTC related refunds should be available in taxpayer bank accounts and debit cards starting Feb. 27, if taxpayers used direct deposit and there are no other issues with their tax returns.
We should get updates hopefully tomorrow. It could explain the codes though

I received the same message, but according to a couple of sites the reference code 1541 can mean a couple of things.
Reference code 1541 is an internal code that the IRS uses to identify returns that have been “Delayed”. This means your return was flagged and put under further review(45-60Days) or until they can get the issue resolved. This message typically means that they are holding your refund until you resolve past filling issues related to:
⦁ Adding a Dependant that someone else claimed in prior years
⦁ Back Child Support
⦁ Back taxes owed from Federal or State
⦁ Earned Income Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit
⦁ Failure to file any prior years tax return
⦁ Government Student Loans
⦁ Over Payment of Unemployment CompensationThe errors and resolutions department will look further into the tax return and try to correct the problem. If they are not able to correct the issue you will receive a letter within 30 days requesting information from the IRS

I hear ya. I have $81 to last me until the 28th… But let’s take your time it’s it’s not like I really need the refund 🙄😒

I wish they would bump my refund into my bank before it hits collections for being overdrawn….

For those saying they have the “take action” and “refund delayed”, but don’t see the 1541 reference number…click on contact us. I clicked on the blue contact us link and the code was listed there.

How long did it take to get a letter after getting the 1541?
-
February 17, 2019 at 10:20 am #4276070Inez27
Would they delay it because I got the advance?
-
February 16, 2019 at 11:36 am #4273878brandi
I got 1541 last tax season. They sent a letter stating they need ID verification. It pushed my refund about 1 week later than normal.

Sorry for the rant I’m just frustrated.
-
February 16, 2019 at 10:04 am #4273639Josh
i don’t want pity or anyone to feel bad because a lot of people are in the same boat or worse off. But damn when I read someone anxious on getting their refund to have spending money on a cruise?!
-
February 16, 2019 at 10:02 am #4273635Josh
Meanwhile I sit here, unable to work, waiting on disability to sort itself out, two kids, a bank account overdrawn that is about to get sent to collections and A cell phone that is near shutting off…… thanks for this delay.
-
February 16, 2019 at 9:59 am #4273623Josh
No update. Still sitting 1541. Seems like this whole month has been a waiting game with the irs. Last thing they told me was wait until the 28th because that’s when the refunds should be issued for eic and actc. It’s all garbage though. F the irs.
-
February 16, 2019 at 9:42 am #4273575redacted B
Mine says all that but to mention code 1541 in the call.
-
February 16, 2019 at 9:39 am #4273564Chearts27
@Tara same. No tax topic just saying it’s delayed and to call if I have questions . Doesn’t seem like it’s as bad as topic 1541 but idk…
-
February 16, 2019 at 9:38 am #4273562WicK3d
Minr just says still being processed,
-
February 16, 2019 at 9:34 am #4273551Ash
@Tara
Does it say that when you plug in your info to check status? -
February 16, 2019 at 9:32 am #4273543Tara
Mine doesn’t actually have a tax topic 1541, all it says is take action and refund delayed as the information…should it actually say “1541”? My transcripts have a 570 but no additional information there either.
-
February 16, 2019 at 9:28 am #4273533Ash
Hi guys,
Where I’d this code exactly on the wmr? I check my status on irs,gov I have the being processed message, refund amount and personal info on left side. I just changed from generic path message last night. Thanks -

@ redacted B, my friend, here we go: held off Fling until 1/30, accepted 1/31. Looked for ANY THING I may have missed last year. One bar, $$$ showing on the left side, then about Wednesday this week, OH BOY! Bar is gone as well as refund amount. Sigh…… hoping for a Saturday update, but in just at looking at all the threads on here now, seems they are doing holds/audits at will. Dear God….. here we go yet again!
-
February 15, 2019 at 11:31 pm #4272584Spookyrides
@Tarak: hate to say this but answering the 4-5 questions over the phone isn’t the ID. Verification there talking about. Trust me, as we got our refund last year in November. It’s only there shitty way of being legally able to speak to you. Your calling a call center too, where there rated on how fast they can get you off the phone. You ask: A, then ask a few identity questions, then your “put on hold for a few minutes”. Meanwhile there searching for any answer to give to you, a letter has been mailed, your under a 45 day hold, blah blah. Our advocate from last year told me that the acutual call center folks have zero insight as to what the hell is happening with our returns. If in 45 days you can’t get a response, be proactive and grab an advocate!

So determined to get to the bottom of this I. Called and would not take the 21 day generic response for an answer. How do you know without even pulling my info up. I was told a 45 day reveiw starting 2_25 by a reas a$$ of a guy. Then the next agent said EIC credits blah blah and if nothing by Tuesday then call back. Idfk anymore

Tarak, did you get any letters in the mail from them? Sorry I can’t recall.
-
February 15, 2019 at 9:16 pm #4272403Tarak
@Martb much easier then restyling in each one lol. I was thinking about my convo with them yesterday and I feel like they may have done an ID verify over the phone yesterday because she had me read her several different rows from different return years. i wonder if that’s all i needed and maybe it will release now? idk probably over thinking it but she said multiple times to allow 45 days from processing date which is 2/25 and said i would see either my refund or a letter but then encouraged me to continue to check wmr

I am on hold with IRS about 1541 code and initially she said it is due to offset and directed me to offset line which I have already done and I absolutely have no offsets so now she is digging deeper to see why this code is popping up for me. I know everyone’s tax situation is different but as of now it sounds like they have no idea why this code is popping up and were quick to give me any excuse. I filed 1/16 and accepted same day. So she also just said that my account has been pulled for further review, She said that could be because employer hasn’t sent over w2 info yet so they will not release refund until they can compare my income reported against w2 from employer. She said to allow 45 days from 2/25 which is my processing date apparently. UGH im in for a wait it looks like

February 12, 2019 at 7:37 pm #4267421
According to: https://thecollegeinvestor.com/6186/irs-wmr-reference-codes/ ……,
“1541 – Offset Overflow freeze set when offset storage within IDRS is not large enough to hold all generated transactions, or credit balance has been completely offset and two or more debit modules still exist.”
Also according to: https://www.irs.gov/irm/part21/irm_21-005-008r …….., 570 – is a hold
I’m not sure if the reference for the TT 1541 is 100% accurate because I don’t think that information comes from a reputable source, however, the code 540 is 100% because it is on the IRS.gov website.
Call the offset number, and double check making sure that you are free and clear from a debt that will sap away your refund. Also, if all else fails, it never hurts to call the 1040 hotline and ask what is going on.
I hope this helps.

February 12, 2019 at 7:01 pm #4267370
I’m curious to know… for anyone got 1541 that claimed the EIC and/or the ACTC, did you go to the PATH message first and then it switched to 1541? Or did it jump straight to 1541?

@Spookyrides,
Yes sir! I’m glad your tax situation came to an end last year at least. For several it still hasn’t. You called it perfectly as to when you’d get yours to lol. At least everyone had a nice Christmas? LolSo many things have changed for me since we last spoke back in October. I really need my refund this time. Buying a new home and it’s been very stressful, along with everything else life throws at me. Now this. The one thing I thought for sure would be simple this time around.

redacted B: Fun and games with our Pals at the IRS yet again? After we finally got our refund last November, they still sent me two more ID verify letters, then wanted $25 back. I hope we don’t fall into the traps yet again.

Anything new on this topic?
-
February 11, 2019 at 11:14 pm #4266095redacted B
Several called this morning. Apparently the IRS phone ppl said to DISREGARD 1541 and to spread the word, especially if you claimed either tax credit. So, I guess we just cross our fingers and wait and see and keep a big bottle of lube on standby!
-
February 11, 2019 at 11:09 pm #4266088Melanie
Seeing a trend where everyone accepted 1/22 woke up to same message. I did as well, accepted 1/22. Called this morning as soon as they opened, woman looked through my return, saw no red flags or notices sent from her end so hoping it’s just a delay due to the recent shutdown and glitch with acceptance date?
-
February 10, 2019 at 11:30 am #4264488Tarak
1541 could be considered a CFreeze which is due to path act and will systematically begin unfreezing and releasing February 15th. no action is required. although this could could be linked to other tax situations I believe this is why I have 1541 code. guess I will be checking back on February 15th to see if it updates at that point.
-
February 10, 2019 at 10:36 am #4264457Melanie
Same and accepted on 1/22 as well
-
February 10, 2019 at 9:00 am #4264404Holls
1541 is an an internal code that the IRS uses to identify returns that have been “Delayed”. This doesn’t mean there is something wrong with your return, it could simply be that the IRS has an overflow of returns at this time and is behind schedule on issuing refunds. There are different reasons accounting for the 1541 reference number.

@MISS Jae thank ya ma’am I do appreciate it :)
JN, last year, I went through hell as well, had to verify my identity and everything else, several folks in December was still waiting on their returns.
I sure hope this isn’t anything like that was.
-
February 10, 2019 at 4:12 am #4264344JN
I m wondering if this is a generic code #1541 or is it a review /audit code .. I see a few ppl woke up to take action with no codes. Reading past years returns from other ppl seems like they went thru hell ..

Exact same boat here. Filed 1/18 and accepted 1/22 with HRB, had 1 bar and topic 152 until early this morning when bar disappeared and it changed to there is a delay in processing your return. It does not specifically say to call the irs but says that if I need to call them, use the reference number 1541. I was very disappointed this morning but as I see more and more people with the same message and google search the reference number, I am inclined to think that it is just a generic code that means wait another week or two.
