      Someone please help!

I just got a DDD for 2/13 but with topic 203, I research the 203 topic and from what I gather, I don’t have no student loans as I never been a student, I don’t owe child support as I don’t have a child, I was on unemployment back in 2015 for a brief time but that was reported on my taxes back in 2016, so all these factors can’t be the reason I am getting topic 203.

Now here’s where it gets interesting, I was owed a refund for my State Tax but received a letter in the mail that I didn’t pay my State tax for 2014 when I briefly lived in a State I left but only return last year. They took all of my State, so I didn’t get a State Refund but I paid into Federal that year when I moved, even received a federal refund. Could this topic 203 be related to the State they took that I got the letter for? Can’t understand what this topic 203 is for my Federal

Well, good luck with that war there Guy, let us know how you make out. If you have a letter from the lender or the Dept of Education indicating that the student loan was paid or settled in full that would be helpful IF that is what caused the offset. There may however be other additional obligations that you just may not remember at this moment. But since calling the hotline sparked your memory about that obligation, why not call again and speak to a person, or wait for the letter that is bound to show up in your mailbox, it may also spark some more memories of long forgotten debts.

Either way, there is nothing more that we here can do for you. I wish you the best and truly hope that this is all just a big oopsie by the tax man.

Something similar happend to my girlfriend a few years back. She had just finished paying off her student loan and I’ve never seen her happier. A couple months later she gets a letter from the department of education saying her loan was in default. Turned out somehow that she had a second student loan somehow that she didnt know about or remember. There was no winning with them and ended up getting her whole tax return taken. She only got it back after claiming a hardship and going through heck trying to prove everything.

I just call the hotline again and this time I proceeded to option 2 and it says my whole refund was offset to settle a tax debt, this is absolutely untrue as this was paid when they took my refund back in 2014, now that I remember, they did the same that year for State, if fact, I remember I paid on this through out 2014 and when I file my taxes in 2015, they took the remainder and I didn’t owe anything else and moved out of NY in 2015 and received my Federal with no problems afterwards but moved back to NY last year and now just finish my taxes and now they saying I owe the money again. They are not going to get away with this, I plan to fight this to the fullest through appeals. I am also going to find the letter I received that year when they took my refund explaining that my refund was taking to settle a debt as my proof it was paid. THIS IS WAR!!!!! They will not get away with this with my proof.

Ya if they already offset your return then you wont be on the offset line anymore. I had a minor offset last year and that was my experience. Wish i had an answer for you. Only time will tell unless you make some calls monday.

Just call the offset hotline and find out what the offset is for instead of guessing 1(800)304-3107 make sure you listen to both option 1 & option 2 because sometimes option 1 says no offset then and then option 2 says there is an offset.

                    Goodluck!

@scott, I called the hotline but it says nothing owed under the social that was entered. I live in NY by the way. NY took my State Tax from 2013 that I was getting this year and I received a letter explaining about that a couple of days ago however I filed for federal that year, I don’t understand what this could be.
I have Netspend so I am sure I will get my DD on Monday or Tuesday, I always get it before the actual DDD

Try calling the offset hotline. It will tell you if you owe and to who unless it is fedaral.
