Has anyone done a hardship to try to keep the IRS for offsetting your refund to pay a past due federal tax? I’m in the process of working with a tax advocate and she’s not being super helpful. What kinds of documentation did you have to send? Were you able to get them to avoid offsetting the refund? I am out of work until mid-April possibly even until mid-May because of health issues and the lady I spoke with Friday wasn’t helpful at all. I explained to her my situation and that without my income for the next couple of months that we wouldn’t be able to pay our basic necessities and even provided her with some past due bills. She said she could get me $1,300 of my refund (which is what I have left after the IRS debt from 2013 is offset), so basically she can’t help me even though I provided her with stuff she didn’t even request proving how much it cost us to live even on the most budgeted spectrum. I asked to speak to her direct supervisor, but she won’t be back until Tuesday, so I hopefully will receive a call then. Any ideas of what I can provide or explain in a different way? Any advice would be much appreciated. I am basically bed ridden at this point while I’m awaiting major surgery and this is adding stress to my situation.
