Someone has either stolen my son’s social security number or someone accidentally entered the wrong number and now I can’t efile my return. It’s been rejected by the IRS. It’s my understanding that I have to mail in a paper return now. Has anyone else had this experience? If so, how long did it take you to get it straightened out?

Thanks for the replies and sorry to hear of y’all’s troubles. My teenage son wasn’t filed as a dependent. The IRS said they filed a full fraudulent return using his name and SSN with a fake W2. We had to file a report with them, the FTC and the police department and lock his SSN. I am filing by paper and praying it doesn’t take longer than a few months for them to process as we really need the money too. I will still also have to provide documentation that he is my dependent.

Mail it asap, my ex constantly tries to steal my kids tax credit. She’s a welfare bum. No income uses her husband’s return to try a claim and I have to file paper returns all the time. She commits a felony every time and the IRS does squat. Just show proof the dependent is yours to claim and you’re good and they process.

Sorry to hear that. My situation is different from yours but years ago, I forgot to enter important info on my return and it got rejected. I had to mail it and it took about 2 weeks after they received it before I got my refund. It totally sucks to mail it. I even got a tax advocate because I really needed the money at the time.
