I filed and it says I am getting a certain amount back. My bar was on the 1st bar “received ” for a while, now its the status most are getting… “blah blah blah processing your refund” etc. But, I called today. I know I owed taxes from last year and I know they will take that put, but shouldn’t I get a letter for that? Also, if it is in processing, does that mean it has been excreted, now it’s just processing the back debt? I am just concerned I haven’t receivedone a letter or anything.

In my experience with a past federal tax debt they just lowered my approved amount to pay back what I owed. Plus any applicable fees and interest. Once they processed my federal tax debt from a prior year I updated to approved for the new, lower, amount with a scheduled DDD. Also in my experience this process did not seem to slow down my return being approved.

Not in my experience, but from what I’ve read, any non-federal debts, i.e. child support, those can be garnished from your return but do not report in WMR since those debts and amounts are not provided to the IRS, but instead processed by the Bureau of Fiscal Services after your approved return amount is released. They will send a letter regarding those offsets.

Perhaps someone else can chime in regarding the latter more in depth…
