SSA.GOV W-2 reported wages

I just learned a day or two ago that you can create an account on SSA.GOV AND see your yearly wage amounts and other information. My 2017 wages are listed on the site already. My question is HOW do they get the W-2 wage amount? Is it from your employer, the IRS, or does it not post on there till confirmed by both? I have been trying to research this online and have came across many different answers. Thanks Everyone!!

By law employers are required to have wages reported to SSA by January 31st each year. Unless you are self employed, checking SSA for wages doesn’t really do anything.

Example,

My w2 income was reported already to ssa. However my self employed income just reported to ssa.gov from the irs.

If you have a job your employer reportd it. If self employed the irs reports it.
