      Hi all,

I have a friend who filed her taxes and did not receive her refund within 21 days. She called the IRS and they told her she is under review. She has not received any correspondence yet. We went back and looked at her 1040 and discovered that she accidently put her social security tax amount (box 4 on W2) in as the amount for federal tax withholding instead of the amount in Box 2. There was about a $2000 difference between these amounts. This resulted in her (not yet received) refund being about $2000 more than it was supposed to be.

At this point we are unsure how to proceed.

Do we go ahead and file an amended return?
Wait until the review is over?
What happens during and after a review if they find out you messed up?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I did this same thing in 2014, I waited for my refund, then filed an amended return and repaid the amount. I am not sure what the process is supposed to be, just sharing my experience. At the time I found that if you do make a mistake and the IRS refunds too much money it is the taxpayers responsibility to correct it. If you do not correct it and the IRS finds the mistake, you can face fines, interest, etc. Have your friend get a Tax Advocate. Mine was >$200 mistake

I would call every tax Advocate that you can find till one answer or call a tax filing place explain you didn’t file your taxes with them but have noone else to call and would appreciate advice on what to do now. But I hope it goes well and best of luck dont give up till you get a answer.
