I just have a question about last years return and this year. Last year I had a refund of $XXXX. It was a paper check. It was sent and the post office returned it to them saying it was a wrong address. I never bothered to call or anything about it, i did get a letter saying it was returned undeliverable. I filed this years return, and should have it this week. will last years return that was returned to them be added to this year, or will another check be sent, or will i have to call them at some point this year to get a check re-issued?

Ok, now that makes sense. However, it should work the same way SSI works. If you move and do not notify them in time, the check is returned and then resent to the current address. Worse case is, they will issue a new check and then send it to your current address.

In either case, I would call them and have them look into for you. Whether you need it or not, $8K is a pretty decent chunk of change and definitely worth the time it takes to speak to someone.

The letters can be forwarded after a change of address with post office, checks aren’t forwarded.

I had moved, the check was sent back to them, and the letter forwarded. The letter was just asking for an updated address because they had sent me mail that was returned. I did finally send them an address update in September or October.

Just because you want your money back doesn’t mean you need it to survive. Even if the refund was $40 bucks, I would still follow up on it.

I think it comes down to personality type. People who are organized and detail oriented like to keep track of things and cross them off their to do list… and not leave things outstanding.

I think people fail to realize on this forum that some people dont NEED their return for survival every year. we nvr got our 2012 return and life was just busy that year, we forgot bout it till we saw something on the news about old refunds sitting unclaimed.

And how exactly did you get a letter saying the check had been returned to them, but you weren’t able to receive the check? The post office delivered the letter but not the check?? Sure!!
