Efiled 3/2
Accepted 3/4
5071c letter Rcvd& id verify on 4/1
Can’t get login info as no credit accounts ie. no student loans, mortgage, credit card, etc. on credit as have spent 2 years cleaning my credit and getting rid of all of that to start over. Currently awaiting an account to report so I can attempt to get a login to order transcripts.
WMR no change since 3/12 which says the 9001 Code.
Anyone IS Verify on 4/1 receive any sort of updates? -

I e-filed on March 3. It was accepted March 3, boyfriend same thing and he already got his money. I go to check money, and there was one bar for a while, now, there are no bars and it says my return is being processed and a refund date will be provided when available. It just has a link for tax topic 152. Any ideas? I have never had issues before and it has never taken this long to get my money, even when I owed and got a partial refund it didnt even take this long. HELP. When i call ti doesnt even give me an option to speak with someone it gives me the status and hangs up on me
Your tax return is still being processed.
A refund date will be provided when available.

Friends…9001 is an ID verify request. Check your mail for letter from IRS…there is a control number on it. Verify over the phone or by using idverify.irs.gov. once verified WMR will take a few days to show correct information. Be aware, once verified the process can still take up to 9 weeks though highly unlikely.

This is too frustrating!!! Was accepted on 02/07/2019 have the credits. Changed on the 16th update 21 days was on the 28th of February.. was hoping for an update this morning but no.. I used turbo tax. No letters snet for identity verification, I hope getting my transcripts this week will day something. I always order right when I’m accepted and by the 21st day.. It’s nice to know when we have to pay they don’t care what the excuse is. They want our money. But when they owe us no st they take there time n just don’t give a dam…

Accepted on 2/14..had one bar for a week then switched to Please mention reference number 9001 to the IRS Customer Service Representative….now it’s 3/1 and after the update still “9001” ….no letter from IRS..called but couldn’t keep on hold….any ideas suggestions to help me out? Anyone in the same situation and got your return without doing anything?

i am wondering if this has to do with not putting in your drivers license or state id number. I filed my kids taxes for them on Turbotax and put their DL numbers in and they all were done and deposited within 2 weeks. My ex husband asked me to file his and I did without using his DL and he is sitting 9001. Filed and accepted on 2/8/19, just checked and code 9001.

I just got off the phone with the IRS. I filed 1/29/2019, I have two dependants. At first everything was normal, I had bars and all. My return was selected for review and I have to verify my identity. The letter has not been mailed, and she doesn’t know when it will be mailed. But, I can’t verify until it’s received. I can’t go into a local branch to verify without the letter. She did say that the verification can be done online.. After I verify my identity, my return will take up to 9 weeks to be deposited. So there’s that😠.

I still have code 9001 and topic 152. I had to fax some papers (1095-A and 8962, around the 20th) Still have it even though that my paperwork is there and it is being worked on. Just that it might take up to 10 days-8 weeks.
-
February 24, 2019 at 4:53 pm #4300249Aaron
I had code 9001 for a week or two. On 2/21 I the code disappeared, bars showed back up and it changed from still being processed to “being processed” I have received no mail for anything, and I’ve only spoke to a irs rep once. So I’m not sure what was done to change mine. I know that offers no help but should offer a little reassurance that it’s nothing to big.

I got accepted Jan 22nd . i saw one bar on my refund status then i checked and theres no bars theres no info they can give me. Just says topic 9001 at the bottom. I claimed dependents same as last yr and the yr before . usuallu i cam see its been processed but now i can’t . i read the site would ne updated on feb 23rd #today.
I am still not able to see anything ..is anyone else in the same boat or have anymore thoughts.. I read checking can make it take longer but how are we suppose to know where we are at if we dnt check ?? I haven’t gotten any letters or any major flags that something is wrong but i filed on the 19 of Jan . even though they start accepting on the 28th of this month. That would put 21 days as the 18th if im not mistaken but its the 23rd and i haven’t received anything or any info -

I have had the 9001 code since I got a accepted on 1/14. Have called a couple different times was told mine was picked for additional review and the review part has been completed. I have not received any type of letter. The IRS agent informed me that I should update and or have my refund by 2/27 and to call back the 28th if i haven’t changed. When I look at my transcripts it says no return filed. The only date listed is 2/25 under the as of date. Anyone experiencing this?

If you call over and over again, you will get a 9001. Constantly calling and checking causes delays.
-
February 20, 2019 at 9:02 pm #4288496Tracy Miller
I called the IRS today for 9001!!!!!! I have been Ping for identity theft. That’s all the IRS representative could say. She told me to call back the following Friday, find out what the file says at that point. she said most of the time the IRS will handle the problem internally, but if need be I will receive a letter if I need to go to the IRS office to verify identity. From this point, she thinks I may have my return within the next three weeks. This is for the taxes of 2018.
If you have the IRS code 9001, you will receive a letter. But call after 21 days. The representative only has access to the reference code, and can’t tell you anything after that.

I filed 1/29 got the 9001 code a few days later! Never called the IRS this tax season and recieved a 5071c letter to verify yesterday..the letter was dated for 2/14! I was on the 9001 code for 15 days. Verified otp in under 30 mins and was told 2-9weeks 🙄

I e-filed on 1/25/19 got the status bar that it was accepted. Now I’m getting the 9001 and to call 800 with ext 362. Called this morning first was told they don’t have my return then was told that it was processing but it was stopped. They gave me two 800#’s the first one to verify identify you have to have the code from a letter(that they haven’t aent) the second askes for a 6 digit ext(which they didn’t give me). So I called back spoke to someone else they said they don’t see anything that would make them twll me that. That I should wait 21 days from the 28th and if I dont get it then call them. Can anyone offer some good advice.

February 12, 2019 at 6:33 pm #4267336Scotty
I just got off the phone with a nice lady from the irs who advised me that the code 9001 everyone is seeing is just a generic processing message it’s not specific to anything related to your return she also informed that if there was any issues with the return you would of received some type of correspondence in the mail within 14 days of them of the receiving your return that provided me some relief so I will continue to wait hoping for update this Saturday as my 21 days are up on the 18th
-
February 12, 2019 at 3:34 pm #4267109Lydia
Filed 1/28 accepted 1/28 went from one bar to that 152/9001 message. No EIC but CTC. No updates. I have seen so many different stories about exactly what this 9001 code means I don’t know what to believe any more.
-
February 6, 2019 at 11:30 am #4260066Scotty
From what I understand from the IRS is that returns didn’t actually start processing until the Jan 28th when they opened regardless of how early we got accepted so we have to wait 21 days after opening day not from when you where accepted because they were just testing the systems so people got early refunds most didn’t but hang in there everybody I know it’s frustrating wmr will update when your done processing code 9001 is just the generic processing message look for an update this Saturday it’s the next big update so fingers crossed

Hello everyone I’m in the same situation I filed with freetaxusa on 1/2/19 the same software I’ve been using for the last two years received a email on 1/14/19 that my return had been accepted by the IRS made it into the test batches assumed that was a good sign on 1/17/19 my bars disappeared and i had the reference 9001 code alot of people have had or still have this code when checking wmr I guess it just depends on if your a weekly or daily update I called the IRS on opening day because I still haven’t seen any movement on wmr and alot of people who got accepted the same time as me where already starting to receive DDD oddly enough I was told they didn’t haven’t my return on file and to give it some time since no returns were actually processed until the 28th despite how early you filed or got accepted nobody’s return started processing until the official opening day so I was little discouraged about that I called the IRS again yesterday on 2/4/19 and they couldn’t verify my info over the phone so I called and made a appointment to go into my local IRS office for today 2/5 figured I would need to ID verify again since I had to in past years even though none of my information has changed this year no such luck came from my visit at the office I was basically told to wait 21 days from 1/28/19 and I lf had not received my return or a letter then to call or come back in so it’s basically a waiting game alot of refunds where delayed because of the shutdown I just want to shed some light on the situation since we’re all in this together and seem to be getting mixed answers everybody’s situation is different I’ve heard code 9001 means nothing and that just means your return is still processing and will update with DDD when it’s done processing some say it’s a system glitch others say it means you have to idverify you won’t really know unless it’s been more than 21 days since 1/28 and you still haven’t gotten your refund other than that they won’t provide you any information no matter how early you got accepted I was able to order transcripts by mail but that means entirely nothing because they can show up blank I can’t view them online because you basically have to be in some type of debt I also created a account on ssa.gov and I can see my 2018 wages so I don’t know if I’m done processing or not I just have to wait and see for all the weeklies like myself updates are Tuesday overnight into Wednesday morning and Friday overnight into Saturday morning so I’m hoping for a update soon

Hi Everyone,
I filed on the 10th and got accepted on 1/14 with one bar on 1/17 received Please mention reference number 9001 to the IRS all bars disappeared. I called today because of nothing has changed. I was told I need to verify and a letter was sent to me. But everything else looked good. I hope this helps!!
-
February 5, 2019 at 3:50 pm #4258854Steven
Got code 9001 I called they said that a letter was mailed out and when u receive letter I needed to call back in and verify idenity. I really don’t think any of them know what they are talking about. From what I have heard everyone with this coffee gets different answers

February 4, 2019 at 9:55 pm #4257798Jibbbjawww
If you can see all of your transcripts, it usually means the irs is finished processing your return. There are also various dates and cycle codes on them that people try to interpret.
-
February 4, 2019 at 9:44 pm #4257792Codi
What do transcripts do?
-
February 4, 2019 at 8:38 pm #4257739Jibbbjawww
@Marla
To get your transcripts go to IRS.gov and follow the directions there. -
February 4, 2019 at 7:55 pm #4257703Codi
I called this morning about the 9001 code & I was told its just a system error on their end & its nothing to worry about. Hmmm
-
February 4, 2019 at 11:19 am #4257229Marla gumm
How do you get a copy of your transcripts?
Thanks in advance -
February 4, 2019 at 9:38 am #4257098Kellie
Oh she also stated for those “accepted early” it was a test run. Your return did not in any way begone processing until the 28th. Transcripts can’t be updated until its fully processed so doe all those saying they have a DDD from the IRS and have those two EIC or PATH then they are telling a huge lie.
-
February 4, 2019 at 9:34 am #4257092Kellie
Good morning ya’ll! So I filed with TT on 01/26. Accepted on 01/28. Had “Accepted” on WMR. It changes to 9001 code about three days ago, with ext 362 if I had any questions. Out of curiosity I called this morning. Was told that this code simply means that it’s being processed, especially if you have those two credits that don’t allow any info to be given prior to the 15th of February. Was also told that it’s no need to worry. Is say patience in this situation is key. Did not have to verify or so anything extra. Hope this helps!!

February 1, 2019 at 9:26 am #4255483Paige
I’m still showing the 9001 code on wmr, but my transcripts are showing up this morning. There’s no 846 code yet, and the only date I see is Feb 18th. It’s some progress. It’s my first year dealing with EIC so I am waiting it out.

Still in 9001, Filed 01/14. Did anyone talk to IRS about it?
-
January 28, 2019 at 2:29 pm #4253534Kevin A
After all that, all he can tell me is that they haven’t processed it, and to give it 21 days from today.
The 9001, as far as he can tell, means nothing. I just have to wait.
Ugh.
-
January 28, 2019 at 2:15 pm #4253525Kevin A
I’m EIC, showing 9001. Filed and accepted 1/15.
On the phone with the IRS right now and this guy couldn’t even tell me what the code means. He’s asked a ton of questions off of this year AND lest year’s returns to “verify” who I am.
I’m 52 minutes in and on hold for the 10th time.
I’ll update shortly, but this makes me nervous.

I was accepted the 15th and am still on 9001. I’ve always been a weekly and am surprised that I don’t have at least 2 bars at this point. No credits, just a simple return.

Was shockingly surprised to see the path message this morning🧐….so I’m curious what would be the next step?….anyone?

From this and other sites 1/14 acceptance looks like a ton of people have not moved. No idea why or what that means….super frustrating!!

I’m in same boat, filed 1/10 accepted 1/14…as of today, still stuck on 9001 code page. I thought I was a weekly and assumed wmr would update for me overnight…no such luck 😢

My wmr updated from 9001 to Path this morning.
-
January 25, 2019 at 1:45 pm #4252897
I filed 1/11 and was accepted 1/14 using TaxACT. Mine is a VERY simple return: Single, two 1099Rs, and standard deductions. No changes from 15 prior years other than a very slight increase in my pension. A couple of days after acceptance I got the 9001 Code reference message. It’s now been 11 days and I still have the 9001 message on my status page. I see a lot of others now have updated pages showing at least one bar while others have two bars and a ddd.

I just got off the phone with the IRS just because of all the discrepancy about code 9001 here and while doing research outside of this forum. The lady I spoke with, after a 40 minute hold, was very nice and very helpful. She said she had not heard of code 9001 before and had me read off everything from the Where’s My Refund page. She was able to look up my tax return and couldn’t see any issues of flags on it. She said just to make sure she is going to print it out and take it to her supervisor to double check that nothing is wrong. After another 5 minute hold she came back on the line and said that per her supervisor that just means that I filed early and they received it but it hasn’t been processed yet. She also said her supervisor said that more than likely it will update to processed by Monday when tax season officially starts or Tuesday at the latest.
I have ACTC credit but not EIC. -

January 24, 2019 at 4:22 am #4252632photodude
Had the 9001 message on my wife’s ssn but a regular wmr with single bar on my ssn. This morning it updated and both my wife and I are showing 2 bars on wMR. Code 9001 is gone.Refund approved with DDD set for 1/28. No idea how to post a screenshot.

9001 is not a glitch.
-
January 23, 2019 at 6:41 pm #4252575
I’m curious as to weather anyone accepted in the 2nd test batch also are getting the 9001,or just the 1st batch
-
January 23, 2019 at 5:43 pm #4252570
I’m beginning to think I will see an email from my bank that an ‘eAlert!’ was triggered by the direct deposit of my refund before I’ll ever see the status change on WMR page!

Agreed. This is an excellent place to come to spot patterns and trends. I would agree that, between the codes noted here and on Facebook, this pattern indicates that this error is presenting for something other than it’s intended purpose.
That said, Debbie, I would also advise against feeding the trolls. ;o)
-
January 23, 2019 at 10:44 am #4252493
@Drizzy that may be the case for some, but people are starting to prove that its a glitchhope when they look at their transcripts. Maybe you’re thinking of a different code or something. Idk. Whatever the case I’m just happy to have some hope

January 23, 2019 at 9:31 am #4252478photodude
When my wife checks with her social, she gets the Code 9001. When I check with mine, I get the normal wmr with one bar. i am not worried. Also even though wmr is showing the 9001 I was able to pull a transcript for this year (2018) online showing a refund send date of 1/28/2019. It does not mean I am definitely getting my refund that day but it does tell me that it is at least processing. We will see what happens Monday.

Wish I could post more but I would get in trouble with my company. But I am correct
-
January 23, 2019 at 9:19 am #4252471Drizzy
Ok Debbie someone could have filed with your ss before you did
-
January 23, 2019 at 9:18 am #4252469Drizzy
Ok then we will see on the 28th and then everyone that has the 9001 will be posting. Why was I rejected.
-
January 23, 2019 at 8:37 am #4252455
I think transcripts are starting to update even though the 9001 hasn’t changed yet.

https://www.irs.gov/irm/part21/irm_21-004-001r from IRS.gov : 9001 Systemic error/issue Analyze account and follow appropriate IRM. Sounds like a discription of a glitch to me
-
January 22, 2019 at 3:46 pm #4252339Danielle
@drizzy
You are wrong I do taxes. Everyone on here has seen one bar then the next day the 9001. If u was rejected you would never see the one bar. The IRS told me everyone will update the day they open. -
January 22, 2019 at 3:29 pm #4252334
Drizzy, please take a remedial reading comprehension class. The circumstances described (you filed a tax return that had multiple Social Security numbers attached to it) do NOT apply to me since I have only one SSN on my return.
-
January 22, 2019 at 3:10 pm #4252331Drizzy
Lol Debbie t, but you just answered your question and yes it actually does apply to you since you got the code 9001.
-
January 22, 2019 at 3:05 pm #4252329
ALSO:
“What You Need To Do
If you get IRS Code 9001 when you login, in most cases you need to do nothing. In fact, unless you have a really good reason to call the IRS, don’t.First, the IRS is swamped with calls right now, and you could spend hours on the phone for nothing.
Second, if the IRS has a problem with your return, they will send you a letter describing the issue and the next steps. For most situations, you cannot resolve it over the phone with the IRS because of potential identity theft issues.
If you are getting this code and you are 100% positive that you are using the primary SSN, then you should consider calling the IRS or going into your local office. That is the only sign of potential identity theft that we’ve seen from IRS Reference Number 9001.”
-
January 22, 2019 at 2:51 pm #4252323
Drizzy, it is not a ‘fact,’ it is your opinion, theory, supposition… So, don’t get snarky with your comment ‘people do also know how to google right :/’ Of course we do. And what I found about 9001 code:
“What IRS Code 9001 Really Means
The actual code tells you exactly what it means – you filed a tax return that had multiple Social Security numbers attached to it. Typically, this is a husband and wife, but it could also include children as well (you never know, adult dependents may be checking the status of the refund). When you file your tax return, you have to specify a primary taxpayer, and the spouse or children all are secondary. If you login to Where’s My Refund or on the IRS App and try to use the secondary Social Security number, you’re going to get this error message.”
says this situation doesn’t apply to me (single filer, single SSN used) or a lot of others, such as @heyyymeghan
We come on here looking for answers. To see if others are in the same boat and if that boat is heading over the falls or not. I see too many people stating their opinions as facts. I don’t care if you work for God Himself, if you can’t prove your theory with a link to your source of knowledge, please preface your guess with, “I think” instead of stating you work for some nameless tax company as though that’s all the proof you need.
-
January 22, 2019 at 12:02 pm #4252291
@drizzy How can someone else use my ssn already? I filed early and my husband (filing separately) hasnt even received his w-2 yet to file a tax return. This is a glitch, my sister in law works for H&R block, filed early and has the same code even though she’s single with no credits and not a dependant on any return.
-
January 22, 2019 at 11:19 am #4252285Drizzy
Debbie T. I’m sorry but it is a fact, most of the returns that I have seen come back rejected so far have this code because of multiple use of ss #. and no not almost everyone has it, just most of the people posting on this forum. I mean people do also know how to google right. :/
-
January 21, 2019 at 7:46 pm #42522509001 is a GLITCH
See my name.. Code 9001 is a glitch. Almost everyone has it. It will change on Jan 28th official opening day.. If you have the EIC and CTC credits you most likely will update eith the PATH ACT message and will receive your DDD after FEB 15. stop checking WMR as it may throw a flag and your chances of getting I’D Verify is greater..
-
January 21, 2019 at 7:27 pm #4252247
Drizzy, please stop posting that as though it’s a fact. If that were the case, don’t you think it’d be all over the news? It could easily be either a glitch in the IRS system or a place-holder for some other reason.
-
January 21, 2019 at 11:13 am #4252212Drizzy
Reference 9001 means someone has used the same social on a different return. Sorry
-
January 21, 2019 at 3:29 am #4252194Diana
Filed on 1/13
Accepted status on 1/14
And when i checked 1/16 I got the 9001 error. I did file as head of household with dependents.i have never received this message before.. hoping it’s a glitch -
January 18, 2019 at 6:59 pm #4252039Debbie T
brandon g: “find something to occupy your time” LOL!!! You obviously don’t live on the Oregon coast where it’s been (and will be) storming for days! ;-)
But, agreed, it’s happening to almost everyone so no clear cause to be found.
-
January 18, 2019 at 5:16 pm #4252035brandon g
you can double check your return if you feel you entered something wrong. but I highly doubtful that. just relax and wait it out. especially us with kids. there’s literally nothing we can do. we’ve got 40 days to go.
btw it’s happening to almost everyone, claiming dependants or not didn’t matter. find something to occupy your time -
January 18, 2019 at 3:31 pm #4252027Debbie T
I filed Single with two 1099Rs using TaxACT. I filed on the 11th and was accepted on the 14th. On the 15th, the ‘Reference 9001’ message popped up. There is no chance I used the wrong SSN since mine is the only one on the return (and I’ve been filing for 52 years!). So, that makes me think it is THEIR system that has a glitch and it is NOT because of the wrong SSN.
-
January 18, 2019 at 3:15 pm #4252025JAN
I actually was getting the same message. Filed joint and early so I assumed I did something wrong but signing in to wheres my refund with spouses ss# went right back to received bar
-
January 18, 2019 at 1:13 pm #4252017William
I submitted early with FreeTaxUSA around 01/05, and it got “accepted” on 01/14. Married joint with two children.
Today, on 01/18, the bar disappeared when using my SSN to check and the reference code 9001 message appeared.
However, when I check status with my wife’s SSN, I still get one bar w/Tax Topic 152 like always.
So, my thoughts are that it has to be a system bug related solely to checking status with one spouse instead of the other.
For some of you married folks, try the same thing…if you are getting Ref code 9001 with your SSN, use your spouse’s SSN to check status on WMR and see if it returns the normal status page with the bars; and please let us know what you find.
Thanks,
William -

Hey, all! Adding myself to this list (filed & accepted on 01/16/19; got 9001 today 01/18)
Just to offer hope and help, it does seem to be happening to most folks who have filed early with more than one SSN; it could be an easy-fix glitch, but no one is there at the IRS to resolve it; and this is something that both The College Investor site and IGMR Admins have addressed in recent years. Check out the link below:

January 17, 2019 at 3:59 pm #4251938Alanna
I had my return accepted on the 14th. I filed HOH and i have one dependent and both credits. I was worried about possible identity fraud but it seems like this happening to alot of people who filed early so maybe it is just a security precaution? I got code 9001 and TT 152 and i know for a fact that i am inputting the correct SS but it also said on the webpage that a secondary number was used to try and access my refund status? anyone else reading this?
-
January 17, 2019 at 12:42 pm #4251928Paige
I read somewhere that it’s showing up on returns that have more than one social attached. So joint filers or people with dependents which is 99% of people.
-
January 17, 2019 at 12:12 pm #4251924shell
I have read on the FB page tons who also have Tax topic 152 .. reference code 9001.. including me.
-
January 17, 2019 at 12:05 pm #4251922MicheleWalls
I was accepted on the 15th and all was well up until today when I get the 9001 reference. Hoping it is a glitch indeed
-
January 17, 2019 at 9:54 am #4251907
It has to be a glitch. There are way too many people that have it, for it to be any real issue.
-
January 17, 2019 at 8:03 am #4251901Jibbbjawww
No credits for me.

Yep. Eitc and Actc.
-
January 17, 2019 at 7:56 am #4251897brandon g
sweet I’m not the only one! I’m guessing you guys are eutc credits? this happens they usually clear them up soon, except no one is home at the irs. if you are eitc well buckle up bc we still have about 40 days to wait.
-
January 17, 2019 at 7:52 am #4251895
I have it and my sister has it. We were both accepted on the 15th. I think it’s just a glitch and I’m hoping it corrects itself soon.
-
January 17, 2019 at 7:31 am #4251893Jibbbjawww
I think this code 9001 happened a few years back, and caused a delay. I am praying it’s just a quick fix, system glitch!
-
January 17, 2019 at 7:14 am #4251890
I’m married filing joint. The code is on my husband’s social but not on mine when I check the website. I truly believe it is a system glitch.
