I know I can’t be the only one with this particular tax situation.. so at the end of 2019 my husbands children moved in with us but because they were only with us a couple of months their other parent claimed them on her 2019 return, then in early 2020 my custody situation change so my children also moved in with us, so each of their stimulus payments went to the persons who claimed them. They all lived with us for all/most of 2020 so we filed for the recovery rebate credit for each of them and also for our 2020 baby. Has anyone with a similar situation claimed the rebate and been APPROVED for the children that already received the original stimulus by the other parent? I’m wondering if this could be why I haven’t updated and if they are having to correct it because the payment was technically received for them, however it went to the wrong parent. The way I see it is it was an ADVANCE for the 2020 filing year so I should receive the credit.

Filed 1/26. Recieved 2/12. 2/26 then lost bars. 3/7 still no bars. 3/15 called IRS. They said my refund amount was changed and being held for review. She asked me about the recovery rebate and told me that it was fraudulent to claim it if someone else had already gotten it for my kids. Wth? H&R told me to claim them since they were in my care all of 2020. I know others that got it in the same situation, so maybe there is hope for us.

” If your 2020 return is filed and/or processed after the IRS sends you a stimulus check, but before July 15, 2021 (or September 1 if the April 15 filing deadline is pushed back), the IRS will send you a second payment for the difference between what your payment should have been if based on your 2020 return and the payment actually sent based on your 2019 return.”

A16. Yes. if you meet the eligibility requirements for the recovery rebate credit, the amount of your credit may include up to $1,100 for a qualifying child that you are claiming as a dependent on your 2020 return. Child must be under the age of 17 at the end of 2020 to be a qualifying child for the credit.”

He lives with us. I thought the recovery rebate might be the problem but then on the irs website it states ” Q D16. Can my recovery rebate include an amount for a qualifying child if someone else received one or both economic payments for the child.

Filed and accepted 2/16 eitc, ctc, unemployment, w2. Bars and tt disappeared on 3/6. Message reads still being processed. Our tax prep guy put in the recovery rebate for my step son. His mother claimed him last year and received stimulus for him.
