Okay so I had a long conversation with someone who actually works for the IRS in Atlanta GA and she specializes as a supervisor in the fraud department. She’s actually good friends with my mom. Anyway, I asked her a ton of questions relating to a variety of topics I’ve seen posted on here and other forums. Okay so 1st off even though I’m not a PATHer myself I still was curious about some things. I asked why wait until the 15th of Feb? What was the reason for that and why do some people continue to wait even after the PATH lifts? She said they start reviewing ALL PATH returns on the week of New Years Day (after the holidays) so she said everyone with PATH who files early and have accurate returns are the ones that update the week after the PATH lifts. She said they don’t have a ton of filers before the actual filing date but of course that picks up after the IRS officially posts the date of the start of the tax season. She said ALL PATHS are reviewed. Period. Mainly by a computer and there’s a “scorecard” for every return filed. If the computer flags the return because of a HIGHER score than usual. There are a number of things that raises the score and flags it (which is not public info, of course). Once flagged it will be MANUALLY reviewed by a actual person in the review department (i.e. 60 day notices/45 day notice depending on what exactly made your scorecard go up. She said people who get refunds then get a letter already completed the manual review but the letters are usually backdated by the system, they just corrected everything by the time the system sent the letter out. I also asked her about the IDV (my situation) and she said it’s the same thing basically only it isn’t mandatory to review returns with no credits. They only manually review it when the system detects basic errors that the computer can’t fix on its own which is determined in minimum 2 posting cycles. For the people who had to ID Verify AND got a review letter, they more than likely have credits and as she stated before is MANDATORY to review. She said in my case just to wait it out because I am a weekly and I should see something sooner rather than later being that I verified on the 27th of February and have a simple as a return can get. So hopefully that gives you guys some insight as to your own situation. This lady showed me her badge for her office building and everything (I wanted to make sure she wasn’t just another phone rep that read from a script, and she actually has a pretty big role at the IRS). So I have faith in what she was telling me and she made it make too much sense to not know what she was talking about. I’ll keep everyone updated who has a situation similar to mine. Until then, God Bless and good luck.

This is not accurate. They don’t review a anything until it is received.. they don’t have access to it. They don’t even step into office until mid Jan.

We not trying to excuse what we’re owed according to the Tax Payer Bill Of Rights and if people don’t know what the Tax Payer Bill Of Rights is go on over to the IRS.Gov web page and scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page, so you can put it all up in their face when you’re calling about your taxes. Also contact Congress about the IRS not foreseeing delays with being under staffed even though they know how many billions of returns they have to process.

Now if the computer is messing up then what? Why are they behind on updates and allowing unnecessary letters to still go out after they have already fixed the issue is bad service. Plus they know they have to process billions of returns why was the hiring process late, because as a result people are getting their refunds late.

I’m going to say this the IRS is always changing something and nothing is consistent, because some people were told by reps that they didn’t even start reviewing returns until after Feb 15. I was told by a rep that they didn’t even start looking at them until Feb 18. What one location might do maybe different from what another might is doing. I do think she’s right about not having enough help and the way the computer scores returns.

@DoDon09, if you get to converse with the IRS supervisor you met again, please pass this along:

“Your return is still being processed” is inaccurate and frustrating! A better statement would be: “Your return is waiting to be processed.”

Then it would make sense when it updates to “being processed”!
