My sister called the IRS today for an update and they told her she is under review. She has to prove that her kids were with her all year, we assume her ex husband is trying to claim them. Anyways, they didnt really specify how she can do this. Like what type of documentation she would need to do this. So my question is have any of you had to do this and if so what did you use. Also, how quick is the process after you send the paperwork in.

Provided she didn’t receive government funding i.e vouchers, Food Program, Cash Assistance etc. In this case, they are first in line w their hand out because he now owes them, too!

Well, he’s the sper* donor then. Sorry. Tell her to let his arse claim them. Meantime – IRS knows exactly where he is for back child support which will totally zap all of that refund and then some. SERIOUSLY, TELL HER to get to the child support office A$AP. Fight fire w fire.

Just get as much information as you can. Some examiners are more lenient than others. It may be just a random audit for no reason. It happens.

What if she doesnt have a lease? She owns her house. It was given to her when our grandparents passed. Also, she has sole custody. Their “dad” hasnt seen them in almost 4 years.

Tax Preparer here. You will need a lease that show the children on their with the address listed on her return. School records with the address. Medical records with the address. Deal with this a lot.

If let’s say they have 50/50 custody, the person who makes the most breaks the tie.

She would need school report cards a letter from the regular doctor would help showing that you have been bringing your kid in all year for doctor appointments and 10-95 medical form as well
