So they delay refunds for those filing EIC until 2/15 each year to avoid fraud and false claims. So how do they avoid them after the 15TH. If thieves are going to cheat, by now they would know to wait til after the 2/15 each year, because apparently it does matter then. Does not make sense. And if the same filers have had the same kid(s) information year after year filing EIC, why are theirs being delayed. More than not, hey are usually adding new kids or deleting kids who have come of age.

The process for when someone snatches your kid’s information is…another audit. So, fortunately, that went really smoothly because we’d just freaking done it. Trying to figure out how his data got out there, etc- really nerve wracking and upsetting. If the PATH act prevents this- it did not for us. I’ve often wondered if filing like I normally would could’ve prevented it. :(

I don’t understand why they are doing this year. When they have been spending some child tax payments for last six months.

In 2019, my partner had an audit- it was a pain. Before, no issues with taxes. I always do them because I am good at this stuff- wound up filing 2020’s late, figured nbd, he doesn’t owe. Filed 2020: got an error- someone claimed our youngest. We went through all of that- only to have someone just waltz in and claim him. I hope they adore cheese and become violently lactose intolerant. I understand the PATH act: but, nobody should be glutally injured, you wanted to vent. ;) I’m with you.

The delay prevents identity theft. It creates more time for you to file, so if a scammer also filed a return using your SSN, they freeze any payments and scrutinize both returns to find out who is the taxpayer and who is the scammer.

Just because it foesn’t appear to make sense, remember every rule is for a reason.

The harsh reality is, although they claim it’s to catch people filing other people’s children, it’s catching the EITC fraud because they are less likely to afford an attorney and fight back

I agree! And if we received the advance tax payment and it is the same info why must we wait?!
