It’s congress that made this rule, not he IRS they just process as they are told. They says its to protect identity but I’d say earning a couple hundred million worth of interest by holding the funds for 2-3 extra weeks must have sounded good too.
Good news for next year is that the treasury should be ready to use same day ACH in time for next years tax returns. Which should mean a day or two earlier for some people.

@ellie. That’s exactly right Ellie and that’s the problem. Cuz they don’t like having to pay out. You better believe they’ll make your life a living hell if you owe them money though. It’s the same principal as a mail in rebate. The companies know that at least some people won’t take advantage of the rebate for whatever reason. By doing this type of crap I guarantee some/many will file without claiming these credits just to get it faster. It’s a d*ck move. Maybe I’m reading to much into it but you can’t tell me the US gov is waiting for refund season like a kid on Christmas.and when they don’t want to do something they drag their feet like my kid out of a store when he’s told he can’t get a toy….coincidently because our refund didn’t come in yet (lol kidding for the last part)

@Gary
The unwritten rule only dawned with the internet and electronic everything.
Things got faster easier….for us as well as scammers.
I don’t think there is a good answer honestly. But I think the days of really quick refunds are gone IF you are claiming credits.

To all the “naysayers ” who go on about the 21 day time frame and such, we get it. It’s not a law. However, when you follow a unwritten rule for so long then stop it’s more than a little infuriating and you know that. Like when u have a parking spot in front of your house, your neighbors know not to park there out of common decency. The IRS knows people in some instances if not most depend on this for survival. And it seems each year for the past 2-3 there have been issues to delay the payout. I wonder if I owed them money if I could say “you know what, I know I owe this but for your safety, I’m gonna wait for a semi undetermined time frame just to make sure your getting everything I owe you, hey, this is for your safety…” I wonder how long until my house showed up in the paper.

My 21 days was up yesterday.
Filed 1/21
Accepted 1/23
Processing date 2/13
20170402
Still no update to my wmr
So I am not expecting anything for a while. Breaks my heart but I know my xycle date is not even correct because I have no 846 on my transcript. Someone help me make sense of this mess because people who filed after me know their ddd. I called the irs yesterday and they will not give me any info either. No off sets etc. -

The 21 day thing is past statistic. Theres no rule or even guideline. It’s just a statistic that they’ve been able to maintain. It’s 90% that are done in 21 days. That means that 15 million tax returns won’t be processed in 21 days or less.

This is some serious bs. We depend on this year to year. I love how the excuse is this is to help us. So as always instead of punishing the criminals the innocent people who depend on this have to suffer….unfreakingbelievable

that is definitely The $64,000 Question around here, lol. Unfortunately, none of us really know the answer to that question. This is new to everyone. If it helps I am in the same exact boat as you, filed 1/26, etc., etc. Personally, I am expecting it to take longer then I had hoped. I suggest bracing yourself for the worst case scenario, just in case. hopefully we will be delighted to receive it sooner than that. :-)

We can only help by listening. Everyone is in this same damn boat this year.
And no one knows for sure until we see deposit dates on wmr.
Stay strong. You’re not alone.
Its a damn big boat….

If you’re a PATH, throw that 21 days out the window

Not according to the IRS website. Anyway, the “21 days” thing is more of a guideline. Doesn’t mean you’ll receive your refund that day.
