I called the line says there is 1 offset that COULD be taken from my refund. Called irs they show no offsets according to the 2 different agents I talked to. Did not receive a letter in the mail about it or anything. Called dept of Ed said to call the collection company. They gave no info as to a offset as they couldnt see anything just said that it could be. Called back to dept of Ed today to see if I could get a live person was on hold almost 2 hours and no one came and line was disconnected. What are people’s thoughts? Do u think it still could be offset? Filed and accepted 1/31 no path message came even though I claimed the credits. On processing not STILL processing. Last 2 agents said everything looked fine. Ideas?

I don’t remember what the program called but I called my loan holder and explained to them my income situation with kids and they set me up with the program and based my payment off my income but you can also apply for a forbarence which will stop payment for a year but I don’t think they will do that if it’s in default if I remember correctly

@justin a disconnect should qualify for hardship. Not sure how that’d work if you’re also filing injured spouse.

The hardship would probably clear faster than injured spouse does tho.

2014 was the year the dept of education took mine they asked me if I could prove a hardship that I could some of the money back. I ended up getting an eviction notice. I moved with my mom but sent the eviction notice to them. They sent me about $1200 which was the amount on the eviction notice.

I’m also doing a consolidation loan as we speak to see if that helps.

Just federal. State took mines about 4 years ago but it had something to do with unemployment.

Anytime I called the offset line and I had one my taxes were definitely taken. I am familiar with the program mandy is talking about. My friend did it two years ago and did it file her taxes until March because she had to wait until the last payment posted and she officially came out of default. I called them and got put on program where I didn’t have to make a payment for a year and my loan came out of default.

@Mandy what kind of program is that? After they take my refund this year I would like to apply for that type of program. The Offset line doesnt say I have an Offset as of yet but it does say that I have one debt so I know the refund is pretty much gone. I believe it will update to the actual offset information on my DDD…But I want to be proactive so I wont have to worry about this next year. Thanks for the information

If student loans say they may be offset they WILL take your money, happened to me the past 4yrs due to being in default. This year I did the program n paid $5/month for 9 consecutive months to get it out of default and I still owe $14000 and this year when I call it says they’re are no offsets.

I called the Offset line and it said that I have no Offsets for my social but that I do have a debt. I was told that once the IRS approve your refund …its then sent to the Treasury Dept to see if it matches any debts in their system and if it does then your refund is offset on your deposit date. I am new to this though and not sure how it actually works and what is true.. I checked my transcripts and everything and nothing of an Offset thus far howevwr my DDD is 2/22

In my experience (including this year) if the offset line says there may be a debt, it gets taken. Has happened to me twice for student loans.
