So, here’s some hope for those of us that have been or will be offset. I called the Dept of Education this morning to see if I qualified for some type of relief for my offset due to the coronavirus. The rep i sponsor with stayed that as of last Friday, they have Been instructed to stop all offsets and garnishments due to the pandemic. She stated that if you don’t get de certified before your refund I issued, they will be mailing a check for the entire amount. If you are de certified before they issue your refund, then you will just get it directly from the IRS!! Either way they will be refunding and issuing full refunds for those that were due for offset. Thank you Lord. They were gonna take 8,500 out of my refund😔😔

I recieved my full refund on may 9th. When I called about my check they said it was sent out on the 23rd of April but it takes 10-14 days to get it..

I doubt anybody’s check is going to collection agencies seeing how the Doe only has our personal addresses
-
May 6, 2020 at 5:30 am #4430743
Mine has shown that since last Monday or Tues. Still waiting for money.
I hope the rumors are not true about some refunds are being sent back to collection agencies and not the people themselves. Because that is another hoop we have to jump through and fight them to get our money back.

I checked my account yesterday morning and it was same old same ol. Checked it again around 4pm yesterday and there it was… (REFUND) under TREASURY OFFSET. Thank goodness, they’ve cut my check. Now… the waiting game. About how long do you guys think it’ll take to arrive?
-
May 5, 2020 at 2:56 pm #4430692
@cal241 when was your doe offset for? I logged into myedddebt and it says 2/5/20 for the full refund amount. Nothing about a (refund). Has anyone gotten a refund for their offset with this date? I find it frustrating when I call they give the sorry you filed too early. It’s been a few weeks does someone have any updated information? I know it’s when the DOE gets not when they take it and I didn’t know until after when I got a letter in the mail.
-
May 5, 2020 at 9:33 am #4430648cal241
@banthafett You will get your refund in the mail. Mine just got the “refund” line under payment history. That means the check has been issued and is probably in the mail by now. You should receive yours soon. :)
-
May 2, 2020 at 2:01 am #4430132
@kra
It’s under payment history or account summary. Something like that where it shows your payments & balances. If it says (refund) you’ve been issued a check already. You can also look at the very bottom of the screen in a grey bar.. I noticed a message stating “TOP complete” treasury offset process? Idk.
-
May 2, 2020 at 1:36 am #4430127Kra
Where do I find refund information on myeddebt? I can’t find where it shows any payments, refunds, etc…
-
May 1, 2020 at 12:00 pm #4429966
Mine says the same thing. If you can see refund, that means you have been issued a check & it’s on the way. I’ve also called the treasury offset line & mine is still there.
-
April 30, 2020 at 10:39 pm #4429772
What does the myeddebt site say for you guys?
Last week it showed treasury offset with a date of 2/26
Now 2 days ago, it says that and the line under it, says (refund) 2/26
But that hotline number says last payment (offset) was 3/8 or 3/9 and then says that no refund will be issued.
How can shit for the same account have different dates and say opposite things?

Sorry @hopeful- tom.
Havent been on, but I should have my stimulus at the beginning of may. Unfortunately I was one of the unlucky ones that they used previous years taxes and not my recent one. So they sent it to a closed account, but happy to report portal did update but for a mailed check now by may 1st.

Just to give someone some relief. I filed 1/24 accepted 2/3 and got put on a review for 60 days got my letter dated 3/9. I emailed my congressman 4/4 and got a reply with congressional inquiry form 4/6. Got approved with offset code on wmr on 4/25 with dd 4/29. I was worried they would take it and today got my ddd with my full return in my bank account pending.

April 25, 2020 at 5:32 pm #4425037Aklein201315
Just called DOE. Our offset was on 3/4. We never received an email or letter saying were getting a refund. Called and talked to a representative. She said our check was mailed out on 4/22 and could take up to 10-14 days!!!
-
April 24, 2020 at 1:31 am #4422668Gisselle
my refund posted on 3/7 as a payment but the amount is not reflected on the total balanced. The automated system says a refund has not been made for me but when I spoke to a rep she said I should receive a refund in the mail. So many mix answers. Has anyone received a refund. My refund was for 3/ 2 but it posted towards the offset on 3/7@
-
April 15, 2020 at 11:39 am #4409544hopeful- tom
@ccassada did you get your stimulus too?
-
April 15, 2020 at 11:12 am #4409445
I was in same boat as you guys. Filed 3/25 and accepted the same day. Finally wmr updated on 4/11 with tax offset code 203 for student loans. I have had my refund taken the past few years due to them. I’m happy to report that I recieved my refund this morning 4/15.
-
April 15, 2020 at 8:00 am #4408560hopeful- tom
wmr still shows the offset and 203. and ddd date of the 20th. but it posted in my act this morning :) but still no stimulus….
-
April 15, 2020 at 12:01 am #4407038
Haven’t received a letter yet. But those dates you posted are the same as mine.
I just call 800-621-3115. Have you who received a letter called that number? If so, what does it say? It said there was no refund for my account. If that’s true, that sucks, that others that have the same dates of an offset as mine and getting a refund.
-
April 14, 2020 at 7:49 pm #4406516Yesi
Just wanted everyone to know that i also received a letter from DOE today dated April 9th stating that I am owed a refund. It states i will be receiving a check for the money that was offset on Feb 26th as well and that it will be mailed out within the next 30-60 days. This was the best letter I’ve received in the mail and it is a relief to know that i will get my tax money back. Hope this info helps some of you and god bless everyone.
-
April 13, 2020 at 6:58 pm #4403975CCNAhenny
I received a letter from the department of education saying that they will be refunding my money that was offset on the 26th of feb. The money will be mailed to me in 30 to 60 days so have some hope and also push for the the student loan forgiveness bill so that they don’t try to take it next year.
-
April 12, 2020 at 10:18 am #4402577hopeful- tom
well that gives me some hope, i was accepted on the 30th last month, finally the other day wmr updated to approved, link for tax 203 for offset….also said would have have by the 20th if anything left after offset.
Are you guys saying it might not actually go to them and go right to me? that would be so much better then waiting for them to send a check….i need in my account now
-
April 12, 2020 at 9:24 am #4402511
Sooo here we go
F/A 3/29 on a Sunday.. Wmr updated to approved 4/11 early Saturday – should receive DD before the 20th And here we go with the dreaded TT203 (student loans) with that being said … I’m patiently awaiting the outcome will post when something happens -
April 9, 2020 at 4:15 pm #4400676Mandy
I filed my taxes on 3/29, 2 days after the offset relief was signed. WMR says it’s processing with no DDD yet. I just called the offset line though and my DOE offset is still showing, does that mean they might still take my refund or will I still get it directly from the IRS?
-
April 8, 2020 at 1:54 pm #4400408
Sbtpg just updated with my refund. I filed 3/17 got a DDD for 4/9 with offset code!
-
April 8, 2020 at 1:44 pm #4400406
Okay, thank you!
-
April 8, 2020 at 12:40 pm #4400385Nina
No it’s not on the offset line anymore and nothing needs to be done by us, they’re mailing checks automatically to whatever address is on file. I strongly suggest everyone calling DOE and make sure the address on file is accurate tho 18006213115

I saw someone post on fb that she got her student loan check yesterday and her taxes were taken 2/26 and posted to DOE 3/6.
-
April 7, 2020 at 2:44 pm #4400154CT
Just fyi even though student loan offsets are being refunded. If you owe the state and your account is with the Treasury Offset department 800-304-3107 your funds will still be offset I spoke to them today.
-
April 7, 2020 at 12:57 pm #4400133
Congrats! Anyone on this thread seeing any checks from the DOE?

So I feel like I am being punished for filing my taxes early!? My offset was processed 3/4
-
April 6, 2020 at 8:10 pm #4400011
Did anyone with defaulted student loans and tax topic 203, actually get their DDD yet? I am so worried!
-

April 6, 2020 at 9:15 am #4399896
Just called the DOE which forwarded me to the company that has my loans and she told me that I was certified since I filed after 3/13 I should get my tax refund. I won’t believe til I see it though. DDD of 4/9 with fees being taken out through turbo tax so I should know on the 8th if they get it or not
-
April 6, 2020 at 9:09 am #4399894
I owed for back taxes and they took that, still waiting to see if I get the remainder on 4/9
-
April 6, 2020 at 8:24 am #4399889Gradylady36

April 6, 2020 at 4:09 am #4399858

-
April 6, 2020 at 4:06 am #4399857
Kristi
I’ve been trying to figure it out as well. I have a ddd on 4/9 so I’ll know then. I’ve been seeing most people say they are getting them taken but also they filed before 3/5. I guess we’ll see this week keep this page posted!! 🤞 when is your ddd? -
April 6, 2020 at 3:28 am #4399856Kristi
I filed on 3/24 and it shows on WMR that it got approved but has a tax topic 203 which days your refund will be partially or fully reduced. But my husband spoke with someone from the DOE office and they said our refund will not be taken if we filed right now because of the pandemic declared on 3/13. So my question is, will my refund be taken or does it still just give that code but you will still get the full refund dd?
-
April 5, 2020 at 12:57 pm #4399766jyoung
I also have a ddd for 4/9 with tax topic 201. It shows the remainder to be deposited so 🤞🤞 we actually get it! I do also owe student loans
-
April 5, 2020 at 12:31 pm #4399762Megan
I filed 3/25 and woke up to refund approved for direct deposit, but no date (just says to call if I don’t have it by 4/14) and the dreaded tax topic 203 (student loans)
-
April 4, 2020 at 4:04 pm #4399629
So if I were to get my student loans offset I would know when my WMR updates tomorrow since offset aren’t on transcripts?
-
April 3, 2020 at 8:56 pm #4399425
F/A: 3/18
WMR UPDATE: 3/28 APPROVED CHECK TO BE MAILED BY 4/6.
FULL AMOUNT STILL THERE AND I AM RECEIVING DIRECTLY FROM IRS.. NO OFFSET!! OR OFFSET CODES!!HOPE THIS HELPS AND GOOD LUCK!!
-
April 3, 2020 at 2:54 pm #4399348
My husband called DOE yesterday to find out if we will get our tax return this year. She said we will since we filed on March 17th!! She said it is a good thing that we did. IRS will send us directly not sure dd or a check. Our WMR is still received with one bar. Hopeing we get it soon! I will update here! Good luck to u all

April 3, 2020 at 2:28 pm #4399342Michelle
I just wanted to mention those ladies I was talking to today were late filers. End of Feb beginning march. The irs still had ahold of their refund that’s why they recieved them. I wasn’t aware of that when I posted. I apologize.
-
April 3, 2020 at 1:42 pm #4399332jyoung
Anyone know how long the DOE will not be taking refunds? I filed late March and don’t know how long I’ll be waiting

No change. March 5th and later. I just spoke with someone. But has ANYONR heard when we will receive the check? -
April 3, 2020 at 10:22 am #4399276Michelle
Has there been a switch in things? I called the automated system told me a week ago that if it was after the 5th then you would receive your offset. However, now that message is gone. Same message no date. Their website is saying after the 13th? My husband hasn’t been able to get a hold of them and I’m not sure if they would talk to me because it’s under his name.

@nomoney99 thank you so much. I’ve been praying for a break through.

They are going to take their sweet ass time, with the thoughts maybe it will be over by a certain time frame (no way in hell) so they don’t have to send money out.

I bet we see stimulus checks before we see returns
-
March 29, 2020 at 6:39 am #4398165Jyoung
Filed and accepted on 3/17
Went from one bar and tax code 152 to no bars and we’ve received your tax return and it’s being processed yesterday. Could order transcripts through phone Friday. Wonder how long it will take to get my refund if the irs isn’t holding refund because of offsets… -
March 29, 2020 at 2:22 am #4398158keiharts
Sorry my post was so long and I had to break it up into two replies.
-
March 29, 2020 at 2:21 am #4398157keiharts
I wonder if I fall in the same as still going to get my refund since they still hadn’t even processed yet. FYI I filed 1/24 and received 2/3 and received both 4464c and CP05 letter about 60 day review. Both different dates. I called irs two weeks ago and was informed I was still processing because of my offset for dept of education and my WMR says “we received your return it’s being processed” been this statues for a month.
-
March 29, 2020 at 2:21 am #4398156keiharts
I haven’t even gotten a payment date or anything about my offset just told that my return was still processing due to a offset and I found out it was the dept of education.

U will get urs back!! -
March 28, 2020 at 5:46 pm #4398050
Discard last post lol. It wasn’t posting my response yesterday! Anyway, the doe lady told me it may take up to 45 days and then another 2 weeks to receive by mail — so approx 2 months. You’ll have to contact them to see when the offset actually posted because I filed 1/27, path act msg until 2/16 then WMR updated to offset $0.00 remaining on 2/26. I was told by the rep they didn’t receive the payment until 3/8, so about 11 days later. Even though the website shows payment date of 2/26.
-
March 28, 2020 at 5:38 pm #4398046
This thing won’t post
-
March 28, 2020 at 11:32 am #4397955
My husband has a child support obligation and they took my refund. Wow…he is not even behind.

@ tax cane
Probably because everyone is getting laid off from their jobs… I was actually on my 3rd payment when this happened… Let’s try to focus on what this post is about shall we.. Let’s not get into how people handle their business. Thank you😎 -
March 28, 2020 at 6:08 am #4397877
Taxcane10
I have done so..started in October 2019. You haveto make 5 payments before your return ISNT garnished I had Nnooo idea. -
March 28, 2020 at 3:01 am #4397865TaxCane10
Besides the relief, why aren’t you guys deferring your payments so you don’t go into default? there are ways to make payments according to your income and they will adjust accordingly depending on your taxes filed with the Income-Driven Repayment Plan. Below is the information on how to apply for it. Don’t go into default when you don’t have to.
https://studentaid.gov/manage-loans/lower-payments/get-temporary-relief
-
March 28, 2020 at 12:06 am #4397849
Well we were suppose to get our refund on 2/26. Have no idea of when they actually put it toward the debt.
I imagine if I was to send them a payment they would take forever to make it “official”. But this one time they probably did it so fast, that we wont get the money back.
It will be a nice surprise if it shows up. If not, not going to worry about it or make a thousand phone calls.
-
March 27, 2020 at 5:44 pm #4397734
Well in my case it did not take weeks to post to my account. It was more like 7 to 10 days. I hope I get it back, but not counting on it, since my loan is already reflecting the payment from the offset taxes.

Ok so may or june LOL…. -
March 27, 2020 at 5:17 pm #4397719
Jyoung
They will NOT interfere. -
March 27, 2020 at 5:11 pm #4397716jyoung
Anyone know if the DOE will interfere with refunds for filers after 3/13? I filed on 3/17 and didn’t expect a refund, but WMR shows one bar and tax code 152.
Thanks!!
-
March 27, 2020 at 4:42 pm #4397711
I definitely agree that the 3-13th rule they have in place is creating a lot of confusion because I feel like almost everyone is getting a refund because they obviously need the money for this pandemic. When your taxes are offset – it takes weeks to get to your account & post to the balances. If it’s still in the process – which the DOE or whoever can tell you, then you’re getting a check refund. If you haven’t filed yet – they just won’t interfere at all.
-
March 27, 2020 at 4:01 pm #4397705PriddyChatty
I filed late Feb and had a dd of 3/3 but it was taken due to loans. I keep reading about the 13th but so many mixed messages…could I be possibly getting mine back??

March 27, 2020 at 3:14 pm #4397694Paris
FYI: The DOE is saying 45 – 60 days
-
March 27, 2020 at 12:23 pm #4397633
@missmelissa
Well when I checked my account it says last payment received 2/26 then gives my new balance. So unless received and posted are two separate things, then yes, I believe it’s probably posted. I am going to try to speak to a live person today tho. I will keep you posted. -

-
March 27, 2020 at 8:39 am #4397534
@nomoney99
Yes. This is how I thought it was going to be. I called the DOE, it was just a recorded message, but it clearly states that only March 5th and on will be refunded. Mine was already applied to my student loan on Feb. 26. A few days of the deadline. -
March 27, 2020 at 7:38 am #4397456
-
March 27, 2020 at 3:12 am #4397475keiharts
Welp I should’ve read the entire forum. Abort mission for me. When I called a TA sometime last week. I was told I had a hold due to debit and she gave me a number to call and see how much it was to see if it was cheaper then my refund and they could help me but I couldn’t find out how much they would take. And I’ve yet to get a letter saying if and how much they would take and nor does my WMR say anything about it also it’s still “being processed” smh
-
March 27, 2020 at 3:12 am #4397474
When you call DOE number its an option that can provide you with refund info. I believe its option 2 but dont quote me. Maybe we can use that as a tracker lol
-
March 27, 2020 at 3:03 am #4397473keiharts
That’s a blessing to read. Because I spoke with someone TA and was told I had a debit hold on my refund and it was because of dept of education
-
March 27, 2020 at 12:08 am #4397458
March 5th and so on will be refunded!! If you file now YOUR SAFE!!
DOE said if it was applied before March 5th then you wont see a refund.
-
March 26, 2020 at 9:38 pm #4397391
I filed 1/31, was accepted 1/31, had a dd of 2/26 & it was all taken. I’m getting a paper check refund. I was in the process of filing hardship & everything. I believe the 3/13 issue is that’s the day trump declared the pandemic. They will stop offsets & wage garnishments for 60 days after the 13th. So nobody should be offsetting & nobody should be getting their wages taken from checks.
-
March 26, 2020 at 7:14 pm #4397386
@missmelissa
Their website is saying those from March 13 and later. That’s what makes me wonder if earlier filers will have theirs refunded -
March 26, 2020 at 3:04 pm #4397341
@Megan
They cannot take any tax offsets as of right now. I haven’t looked at the stimulus bill but I believe there is an end date or a deadline of when all of this is supposed to stop. I feel like other people have said 4 months on other forums… but they cannot & will not take any offsets right now.

My taxes were taken last year due to student loans. I got on a payment plan and May is when I’d be good to file without them taking anything, but does this new change make it to where I’d be safe to file now? I’ve been out of work for almost two weeks because of convid-19 so I could use the money.

This is why I keep updated with this forum.. because I want to know when we start seeing things in the mail. I will be updating you guys as soon as I get anything in the mail from DOE. I was also told the IRS can be getting the refund back too & disbursing it their way. This week is just up in the air. So much is going on in the US right now.

Yes! We’re in a pandemic.. they can’t just take money away from us that we need clearly. They’re giving back 1.8 billion dollars that they just took. It’s just going to take time to get the checks mailed to us. Like someone said, this just happened last Friday. EVERYONE IS CALLING & WANTING ANSWERS. I was told that with the DOE.. it’s basically when it’s your turn, it’s your turn. 880,000 other people are wanting their money & calling.

@MissMelissa
Are we even sure those of us who filed early will get back their offset? I filed on 2/4 and mine of course has already taken -

Wow that would be amazing I read a press release from DOE about it. It was posted in a comment on the IGMR Facebook page. I looked at my transcripts and mine was applied on 3-9-2020 so hopefully it comes back. Fingers crossed!!

@Paigezombie
They had only taken my federal not state so I am not quite sure about state offsets, you would need to call and check… but it’s a real possibility with all that’s going on.

Correction on my previous answer about timeframe: I called them again because, as we all know, the DOE is horrible at delivering the correct info, depending on the agent. I spoke with another lady who said there is no timeframe in days or weeks they can give at the moment but that it WILL be refunded soon. She confirmed nothing has been disbursed as of today because the decision was just made on Friday the 20th. She said they should be able to give an ETA if I call back sometime next week.

During this time, the U.S. Treasury will not withhold any money from the defaulted borrower’s federal income tax refunds, Social Security payments or other payments.
If the money was in the process of being taken out on March 13, a refund will be issued. The U.S. Department of Education estimated that 830,000 people will receive a refund, totaling $1.8 billion

Hi
I called and spoke with a rep from default resolution group MIA who took my refund on 2/26. Due to COVID-19 they ARE refunding the offsets soon via paper check. She stated it will be refunded only if it posted to your account on or after March 6th. I explained to her that it was taken on 2/26 but she said since it didn’t post to my default acct until March 8th, I will be refunded the entire $7,900!! Relief is on the way:)
GOOD LUCK & STAY SAFE PEEPS 💕
