I was talking to my bff about it and she said that state was taking hers but she wasn’t sure about fed, so I found the number for her and just for the hell of it, I called and it said there ‘could’ be one on mine and yo call the dept of education. So I called the irs and he said he couldn’t see anything because I hadn’t been processed yet. Told me to call the dept of treasury back and try to talk to someone. She couldn’t tell me anything and told me to call the dept of education. They told me that it is in offset and that they can take up to $38k and after talking to 3 different people there I was told the only way I can get any of it is if I have a court order for an eviction or foreclosure. So I called dept of treasury back to see if they could do anything and she was a complete cunt about it and said no and that they will take it all. Guy at dept of education said they may not take all of it because it’s such a small refund, but they most likely will.

Has anyone been through this? Will they really take it all? Is there ANYTHING I can do? I am a fucking mess right now. We NEED this money to survive.

@Dee, is right. I owe(d) the government. When they finally found me, it was early in the yr – after that yrs tax season, I was able to make arrangements, now State “intercepts” $200 every yr, plus garnish my wages, but it is what it is. Take care of this now, so you can keep more of your money in the coming yrs.

This season has made me feel really down, so many people NEED their money, for many various important reasons. Some stories are just heartbreaking! Wish this were like the grocery store (as I did today), I’d allow very many to go before me at the refund checkout.

Godspeed everybody, keep your head up.

We got ours taken away from school loans last year, they they hit my wifes paycheck. She filled out for hardship, they gave her 6 months that was in November and stopped the garnishment.

Do you think we will get a refund this year? Since the 6 months hardship is still going.

Whats odd, TT sent an email (credit crap they try to get you to pay for) saying that the US dept of Ed, reported her to collections. Which would be total bullshit since we are in the hardship period still.

@Traciej710, it has to go through the same processing process except, I’m sure by now he’s received a notice of interception! When did he file I wonder?

Unfortunately, I’m sorry. They will. But… there’s always hope, stranger things have happened. It has been sn unusual (to me), tax season.

I truly hope they will not.
                    There’s always prayer.

                    All the best ..

Unrelated to department of education…. my ex is behind a few grand on child support. How long do you think until I receive his refund?

Just happened to me too. I called out of curiosity and have an offset on mine for student loans. Called the dept of edu and they said it was sent to a collections agency. Collections agency said that they will be taking all of it. Its only 5k but that sucks when you only get 6k back 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️😭

Yes happened to me in like 2004, they took the entire thing. All you have to do is apply for forbearance or deferment once a year if you can’t afford to make payments. Hopefully somehow you are still able to get your refund this year but apply for deferment now so you won’t have to worry in the future.

You need to sign up for the rehabilitation program and start making payments again. You won’t get your refund this year, sorry to tell you but as long as you make on time payments for the next 10 months…. You’ll be able to get your money next year.

Happened to me last year and now my loans are out of default. I’ll be able to get my refund this year.
