When I check wmr I have the code 206 I think it is for offset. So I called the line bc I haven’t received any paper work about an offset prior. The line said I had a offset for my full refund amt to the dept of education. The dept of education was in my bankruptcy that I filed 3 years ago. I’m freaking out bc I just got a car and have to pay the down payment out of my return and do major repairs on my home. Is it possible that I’ll still get my full return. I’m going to call the offset line in the morning as well as the dept of education. Also when I called the IRS the other day he said nothing about any offsets. I just can’t sleep and need opinions lol.

I had an advocate and sent in my hardship and she said my refund would be posted the 25th. My refund is still due to be taken so what was the reason for the advocate I am really confused.

Unfortunately no your transcripts will update with offset weeks later but if it’s therw on the line they are gonna take it I would get a tax advocate ASAP

              @Queen

Where is the amount showing 0.00? It’s POSSIBLE you could still get your refund if the 0 amount is the balance on the TOP line.

@Jomas Yes the TOP number told me I “May” have an offset for my student loan for full amount. My transcript still says 846 Redund issued 2/27 and the full amount. Does that mean I may still have a chance at getting refund?

You just have to call them and get a supervisor plead you a case and pray for the best in most cases they will work with you but not always

If it is student loans I can help you try and work something out with them to see if they can stop it also

The transcripts won’t show offset code it will show the 846 refund issue code with the date that’s it the offset line is the best way to know and if said that it’s taking your whole refund did it tell you why? And who to contact? Also you can get a tax advocate to start the process of filing a hardship so that you can get the money back but that willl definitely take a few months. I had it happen to me 8 years ago student loans took my whole refund I filed for a hardship and had to prove it and I got my check around July of that year

@Jomas I called and It does say I have one. When will transcripts show I have an offset? And is it possible I can still get a refund if my transcripts still say I’m getting refund and the offsets line says 0.00.

@queen call the offset line 18003043107 it will tell you if you have an offset and what is for the only thing it won’t tell you is if you owe the irs that you would have to call them for 18008291040

@Tonyo I hope you get it also. This sucks so bad I was planning to use mine for bills also. Do you know anyone who still got refund with a tax topic 203 and an offset when you call but no offset on transcript?

Oh geez I’m hopeful. According to the offset phone line I do have an offset for full refund. Does anyone know if transcript doesn’t show offset is that good? Or do transcripts update with offset codes after the money is taken?

@queen I’m showing the same thing I’m praying that I still get my money because I’m scheduled for a court hearing for eviction I lost my job during the shutdown so I’m trying to bounce back from that.

the refund amount will be there until the DDD and it will show on that day how much was taken and the balance reflected on the left hand side of the screen on WMR.

                                      Hi-
Student loans are extremely difficult to get discharged in bankruptcy cases so I’m surprised you weren’t told this when you filed. As for your refund, myself as well as many others on this website have been getting our refunds taken this year from the DOE due to debts we didn’t know we had.

Make sure when you call the offset line that you press options 1 and 2- the first option told me the same thing and that I didn’t have anything and then I pressed 2 and it told me there was an offset for the DOE that “may” get taken from my refund.

On Friday, WMR showed that my refund sent to my bank account and the full amount was still showing on the left side. I got all excited and figured I was one of the lucky ones who slipped through the cracks. When I woke up on Saturday, WMR updated to show $0 would be refunded to me and that money had been applied to my offset.

I pray things work out for you but it seems like a lot of people are getting screwed over this year and it sucks because most of us really need our refunds.

I also have a DDD of 2/27 but a Tax Topic of 203 I called and I do have an offset. Its not showing up on my transcript though. Still shows refund issuing and no offers codes. Anyone know if transcripts show the offset after it’s taken or when?

Federal student loans don’t get discharged in a BK. I am horrified your attorney didn’t tell you this. There are very very few circumstances where student loan debt can be forgiven (serious ones…like total disability or death.) SO sorry this is happening to you….

@jenny I filed married filing jointly and my husband is a stay at home dad so all the income is mind I have been trying to get ahold of someone either at the IRS, dept of education or offset office since 7:45a and litterly haven’t talked to a single person. This is bullshit honestly. The the thing I’m confused about is I received no letter from the dept of education before hand. Idk what I’m going to do.

Did u file single or with a spouse? If u filed jointly, your spouse could file an injured spouse form and still get back the full amount. If that’s the case, you can still get it but it will take a couple months. Good luck, prayers!

Johnathan, That’s what i was thinking as well. I had contemplated filing bankruptcy but I was told it was extremely difficult to have student loans expunged. If the loan is not in default you should always seek to obtain a forbearance or deferment.

Department of educaton loans do not get wiped out in a bankruptcy. They’re just like tax debts. Basically the government won’t actively collect but will take any money owed to you until paid.

I can definitely understand why your worried. If you received the code on the wmr, and the hotline says you owe the amount of your refund, I’d be prepared for the fact that they just may take it, gather information, to plead your case and call the irs today. Sorry this is happening. I don’t think anyone is out of the woods until we have cash in hand. That WMR page can show a big fat 0 bucks in refund amount on Saturday update, myself included. Good luCk and again, sorry about this.

It sounds like you won’t receive any money if the full refund was offset. You can call an advocate tomorrow and request your money back due to hardship. Just prepare to send the advocate proof of hardship.

I’m sorry this is happening. ☹
