I called the offset line and was informed I have an offset for student loans. I’m not on any type of payment plan. If I set up a payment plan can that possibly remove the offset?

@taxsha I can’t defer because it’s been transferred to a collection agency. I did call and get payments set up but it won’t help this year as far as taxes being taken. I talked to the collection agency because the TOP line said to contact them about an offset. The agency said they had no info to contact the IRS, but the IRS says they don’t have the info. I’m so lost/confused.

Jerrica if you owe student loans and your not able to pay them you need to apply for a deferment so they don’t take your refunds.

Woke up with a DDD but also an offset (Topic 203). Im guessing I won’t be seeing my refund Wednesday? I don’t get how a collection agency can take your tax refund…it says a government agency and they transferred my loan to a collection agency. This is for a student loan.

So, my partner has student loans (for 2 years of college only) that are always offset. We had 3 years worth of refunds – each close to a thousand dollars – that were corrected just last year, and the federal education department claimed all of them, of course. I am just curious as to how I would ascertain his total balance due, if anyone has experience with that topic…?

Yeas i was on the same boat for 4 years, the IRS took my taxes, you have to be on a Payment Plan regardless otherwise they will keep taking your taxes until they are pay off..

Wow! Only 7 years, @SugaPie? Were you on a payment plan throughout that time as well, or was it just offsets to your refunds that paid it off?

No you have to have a payment plan in effect prior to the tax season. I’ve been down this road and it wasn’t pretty. They did however take my taxes every other year. After 7years I’m finally done.
