My husband owes the irs roughly 1500 which I know will come out of his taxes and that isn’t a big deal. My question …is this is the first year we have filed together being last year was the 1st year being married, how long will our taxes be held up.. every year he ends up owing the irs for something and that never really holds his return up.I didn’t know with him not being married before and the debt not being mine if they had to hold his refund to see if I fight it or not. Sorry if this doesn’t make much sense. I don’t want to fight it.. I just want to know if they have to wait a certain amount of time to see if I do fight it.

It shouldnt take any longer, I was in the same situation with my wife last year. We filed a joint return but i owed a few hundred bucks to NY and new NJ tax dept. They just took it right off the top and deposited the rest of my refund in my bank acct. I think we filed on jan 29 last year and we had our refund by mid to late feb. Just call the US treasury offset hotline and put his ss number in. It will tell you if he has any offsets and what agency is owed to. 800-304-3107.

I was asking if it would take longer to get back because we were married and he had an offset

Dont quite understand what you are saying but, if you guys filed a joint return and he has any offsets that are applied, the money will come from what ever refund is due to the both of you. Remember a joint return is a single return filed by a married couple. By the way, if he owes the IRS they take thier dough off the top before any other fed or state agency (state tax, child support, student loans, etc)
