Hi, y’all. Just wanted to share my experience in case it helps someone else. I filed 1/27, was accepted 1/28, and then a few days later my bars disappeared and WMR has been stuck on a message saying they couldn’t provide any info about my return, and that I could call a certain number and give them the reference code 9001. I initially tried to call to check, but it put me on hold for 20 minutes, so I gave up. I then decided to just wait because the 21 days weren’t up and I figured I’d have received a letter already if anything was wrong, and that they wouldn’t be able to tell me anything until I waited 21 days anyway.
The 21 days were up on Monday, so I called Tuesday morning (2/19), since Monday was a holiday. The man I spoke with told me that the IRS sent out a letter on 2/14, and that I should receive it within two weeks. It actually arrived that same afternoon! It was a 5071c letter, which meant I needed to verify my identity before my return could be processed. I tried to verify on the website, but it said my information didn’t match what was in their system and it locked me out. I tried to call the ID verify phone number, but they were totally swamped with calls yesterday, so it wouldn’t even let me wait for someone to answer, and just said to call back later or the next day.
So this morning (2/20), I called and finally got someone on the phone. I had to wait a little over ten minutes before someone answered, and then the process to verify my identity took another 10-15 minutes overall. He asked for my basic info, any previous addresses that might be in their system, and because I hadn’t filed taxes in many years, he asked for the last year that I had any reported income. Then he asked for the income amounts listed on my 2018 return (self employed), as well as my total income, whether I claimed dependents and what their SSNs were, and the amount I expect to receive for my refund. After that, he put me on hold for a few minutes to update my info, and when he came back he said that it successfully updated and that I should expect to receive my refund within 9 weeks, but that it could be less time than that. He said to wait 2 weeks before checking WMR.
However, from what I have read elsewhere about others’ experiences, it seems most people had WMR update the following Saturday, with a DDD for the following Wednesday. I hope this is true for me. I will post an update on Saturday to tell y’all whether or not WMR updated for me, as well as when I actually receive my refund.
If any of you have gone through this process before, please share your experiences also! Good luck to everyone! Hang in there!!
