February 3, 2016 – The Pace of IRS Refunds
In general, the IRS is paying refunds at a much slower pace than last year. For returns filed and accepted by the IRS on or before January 15, approximately 65% of refunds have NOT been paid by the IRS. For returns filed between January 16 and January 22, approximately 80% have NOT been paid by the IRS.
The IRS does not release information on how long the average taxpayer can expect to wait for their refunds. Instead, each year, the IRS comments on refund speed only by saying that it releases “9 out of 10 refunds in less than 21 days.” The majority of taxpayers whose return was filed and accepted by the IRS prior to January 15, however, have now waited over 21 days.
Once a taxpayer is no longer within the 21 day period, the IRS WHERES MY REFUND status at the IRS for this taxpayer will change. Once the 21 day period elapses, the taxpayer no longer receives the standard message “You should get your refund within 21 days from the date we received your tax return.” Instead, these taxpayers generally receive the message “Your return is still being processed. A refund date will be provided when available.” Taxpayers who filed prior to January 15 (meaning that they filed over 21 days ago) are now receiving this second message that no longer mentions a 21 day period.
Going forward, the IRS is expected to continue to release small numbers of refunds each day throughout the week. Within the next week, however, we do expect the IRS to release another large batch of refunds of similar size to the large batch released this week. Once we receive information to confirm which day this will occur, we will let you know.
