      Good Morning

Filed 2/2 with injured spouse. Updated from 1 to 0 bars this morning on WRM with no TT but refund amount remains the same on WMR. I understand the IRS states that it could take around 11 weeks so I’m fully expecting it to take that long but I was curious as to others experiences filing IS. E-filed through TT. Transcripts available online but blank “no return filed”. I’m filing as the injured spouse whereas my spouse has no income to report.

Any experiences with the process would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks!

What are the rules for using a taxpayer advocate and is there a minimum time required to wait before you contact them? I don’t really meet the requirements on their website such as the hardship or business aspect of it. It has only been 18 days for me so I haven’t even tried the IRS enough to meet the last requirement though I plan to call after day 21 just to ensure the IS form was received with the e-file.

Can you fax IS forms? This is my first time lol just trying to find the quickest way to get them to IRS

I’ve filed IS the past three years and always have had to get a taxpayer advocate to help move things along a little quicker. With their help I’ve always gotten my refunds around the end of Feb.

Thank you for this. This is our first time filing injured spouse after finding out about an offset. We are filing it by itself. I am still so confused about the paperwork. I might need more help with it.

Hello! I have had to file injured spouse for the last 3 years, this year being my 4th. In prior years, it has taken around 10 weeks for me to get my refund, so this year when I filed the last week of January I figured I wouldn’t expect to see anything about my refund until late March/early April. I checked the wheresmyrefund for the heck of it to see if anything new showed and I already got my DDD for 2/22! I was shocked that it seemed to be processed so quickly. I won’t hold my breath or get too excited until I for sure see the deposit went through. I have read that because the claim can now be filed online with your taxes that they would be processing them quicker than in the past, so hopefully that is true! I will say that there is one year I didn’t have any updates on wheres my refund for 12 weeks so I ended up calling the IRS and somehow the form didn’t process correctly. The last two years i have waited my 21 days and then called and usually I can get someone to at least check on the status of the return and confirm the injured spouse was indeed filed, but it just really depends on who you get to answer the phone whether or not they will let you talk to someone in the injured spouse department.

Thanks for the info guys. Definitely helps with the expectations. Do you generally get back what you anticipate with a partial offset? I have the only income for this filing so I’m not sure if i should expect the full refund as the injured spouse or still some offset.

I did file for the injured spouse last year but it was after the dd went to student loans. I received it in about 8 weeks.

I also filed injured spouse for the first time this year, so I know that’s no help, but I think since they now allow it to be filed with your taxes, it goes much quicker. I filed the 29th also through TurboTax and was accepted the 31st. I lost my bars a week ago and this morning updated to an alert on my account which at first caused me to panic, but after looking further into the matter found out the reference number didn’t mean anything was wrong, just that there was a delay processing my refund. It can be caused by system overload, but I personally think they just need a little longer to figure the amount that will be offset and the amount I will receive. I am calling Monday morning to find out more info. If you would like, I can update you after I talk to them. This is new to me too, so I know the anxiety of waiting to see what the process is. :)
