When I first realized there was a delay with my tax return in Mid February, I called the IRS and the lady said that same thing “There’s nothing needed at this time” She wouldn’t tell me anything. I hung up.
I waited 5 minutes, called back to talk to someone else and asked this particular lady, “Is there a hold on my return? Should I amend it? What is the reason that it was flagged?” She told me what was wrong (my Federal Tax Withhold amount did not match what showed on my W-2). She recommended I go ahead and amend it, but it could take 16 weeks to process the refund. She gave this info with no hesitation.
I acted swiftly, and amended it — same day, mailed it certified to them so that they had to sign to get it… I called back a week and a half later. The lady stated that they got the amended return and it was actually already processed and completed. That was quick! (Not sure if its because the person who signed for it, just went ahead and fixed the error right after they signed for it, or what.)
The lady said I that she could see that they decided to not put my amended return in the “amended return group” where it normally would take the 16 weeks to process and that they were keeping along with the date on my letter from 02/13. She told me that WMR would update this Saturday, (tomorrow) 03/14.
Woke up this morning to check to make sure that my transcripts were updated (because my transcripts update on Fridays and WMR updates on Saturdays according to my cycle code.) I got the 846 Refund Issued code with date 03/18/2020. The last lady was right. She said WMR would update this Saturday… I can see it will because the transcript updated on time with the 846 code like it should.
So, I figure if they keep telling you that you have a 60 day review, and no action is needed… Maybe try asking directly if you should amend it…. and why was it flagged, so you know what to fix. OR tell them you want to go ahead and amend it, so you need to know what the errors are if any… See if they will tell you what the problem is. I just did not want to sit, and sit, and sit… not knowing.
Good luck to everyone. And… Wash your hands… Cover coughs and sneezes in your sleeve… and if you’re sick, STAY HOME! :)
