Spending Bill signed. Govt. Shutdown avoided until March 23rd. Business as usual for the next month and a half.

@Julia Hall
It’s still possible you’ll get it. The shutdown wasn’t long enough and everyone was in Friday morning to conduct business as usual per the article I read.
Now, there may be other factors however – is your refund going through an intermediary bank (like if you file w/ Turbo Tax and have fees w/held from your refund…it goes to a bank in Santa Barbara)…
My fingers are crossed for you!

Quick question, if my return was supposed to be sent by 2/9/18 (which obviously the jerks managed the wonderful shutdown last night), does this mean my return will be sent on Monday now (next business day because we know the government doesn’t do crap on weekends)? This whole thing put a kink in my weekend plans lol Also the IRS Where’s my refund site isn’t updated so I assume it took a nap last night.

Though swift and affected essentially nothing…you were incorrect. It happened while we slept so I can understand why you didn’t think it shut down, but perhaps it is time to admit you were incorrect.
Also, if budgeting doesn’t go well…looking down the pipeline at a POTENTIAL March shutdown. How asinine!

Yes there was technically a very short lived shutdown, but it only lasted a few hours.

@Jo
The government DID, indeed, shut down. It just reopened after the vote at around 5:30AM this morning. Apparently there will be some small ripples, but it shouldn’t affect the IRS processing as employees don’t work for the hours the government was officially shut down.

Well would you look at that? No shutdown. Worked up over absolutely nothing.
@lance and @victor I could argue with a brick and it would still be a brick. Just like I could’ve argued with the 2 of your and you’d still be wrong.Be blessed though!

Just read on Politico and also saw on CNN that The House just voted to avoid a shutdown until the 23rd of March.

@Iance: you gotta love Jo’s comment “Yes I saw the other thread that was on and it is incorrect…but whatever though. Just be wrong.”…
That “thread” is the official guidance documents released by the IRS lol.
If the government is shut down the IRS is authorized to COLLECT payments. The R stands for Revenue! They aren’t allowed to issue payments, because they don’t! They just inform the US Treasury Dept. of the amount they have approved for the tax payer to receive.
If the shut down lasts through Monday, expect things to get very disappointing, very quickly.
@Willbeas what’s up? I see you on here every year, welcome back once more buddy! Lol. -

Im not too worried as it would most likely be back up and running after a few hours of shut down, they wont let it go too long

Damn that’s all bad for you!
Watching CNN now. It’s definitely gonna be a shut down but they say a deal can be reached as soon as the morning!
I’m freaking out!! Haha

It’s never about us little people. The points of filling tax returns is mainly for those who have to pay taxes. That’s why the IRS remains open.
In addition to not getting my refund during a government shutdown, I will not be getting a paycheck either. Gotta love being a little person working for the government.

Yup we know this Kaylee…processing a refund does us no good if issuing is not involved!! Thanks though

Tax returns will continue to be processed during a government shutdown. However, no refunds will be released until the government opens back up.
Once the continuing resolution expires tonight and no other CR or budget is signed, the government is not authorized to spend any money. That’s why essential staff will continue to work but will not receive pay until the government opens back up.

Here’s a partial list of functions that directly impact taxpayers and would typically be put on hold if the government shuts down:
No tax refunds issued
No processing of non-disaster relief transcripts
No processing of forms 1040X, amended returns
No non-automated collections
No audit or examinations (some exceptions apply)
No whistleblower office activity
Here’s a partial list of functions that directly impact taxpayers which will typically continue if the government shuts down:Processing of returns with payments
E-filing
Mailing tax forms
Appeals (statutory deadlines will not be changed)
Call centers (only during filing season)
Civil and criminal tax cases
Certain communications to taxpayers
Active criminal investigations

There is money to issue. They have money. They just can’t agree on a budget. Just like there are some government agencies that operate on reserves. There is money and the refunds are not apart of the budget they are trying to agree on.

February 8, 2018 at 8:20 pm #4210429lance
Actually you wouldnt get your refund. Yes some irs employees would still be working and returns would still get processed, but no refunds would be issued because there wouldnt be any money to issue
-

Since it’s filing season the IRS employees are essential. So people will still get their refunds. In the past IRS employees reported to work and it was only about 9% of employees. This year they are reporting to work and just not getting paid. Refunds will not get delayed.
