Has anyone ever had their federal refund offset by back state taxes? If so, how much federal refund, if any, did you end up getting back?

          @ Larry Huff-

There was one year it happened to me. Received no notice from the state I live in that they were going to do it too. They took my entire refund but it settled my debt. It still sucked for that tax year.

But this year, ironically, I got my state refund and my federal got taken for student loans. Still never received any notification from the DOE either. I figured since I owe a lot in student loans that they’d take both refunds if they were going to offset but that wasn’t the case.

Moving forward what I plan to do is check the offset line as well as strictly monitor my credit report and student loan accounts before I file my taxes again to avoid this from happening. Seems like a lot of these agencies are not sending out notices to people and deliberately making arrangements around fall/winter time to nail people once they file their taxes, especially since the ones who tend to need their refunds the most are the ones who try to file early. But usually the ones who need their refunds are also in some sort of debt.

I had property tax offset for this year, that came out of my state refund.
Hopefully someone can have a more specific answer.
Did you already receive your state, or is the debt higher than your state refund?

They take what you owe the state from your federal.

Depends on how much you owe. I think ours was like $200-300? I don’t remember. It’s been a few years.
