So I filed on 1/20, accepted on 1/23 via Turbo Tax. I do not qualify for EIC because I made too much, and I didn’t have any addition children born in 2016. However, upon checking Wheres My Refund today I see that my bars have disappeared and instead I got the following EIC PATH Act Message:

“According to the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act, the IRS cannot issue refunds before February 15 for tax returns that claim the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit. This applies to the entire refund, even the portion not associated with these credits.
Check Where’s My Refund after February 15 for your personalized refund status. It’s updated once a day and remains the best way to check the status of your refund.”

So apparently anyone expecting a refund can get delayed, not just those who claimed EIC and AC.

Bummer, because I thought Path Act only pertained to EIC and AC credits.

Anyone have any other news or information as if this may be an error, feel free to post.

The addition child tax credit isnt about you having an aditional child it is about you receiving that particular credit if your income relates to that situation. Did you recieve the actc? I did and i didnt even realize it until after. Its annoying.

My husband filed the week of January 16 and received his taxes right now. No EIC.

Yes, I am very confused as well. I filed on 1/24 accepted a few minutes later. I have 5 kids, but one of my kids is grown so I did not file him.. I filed my 4 minor children. I filed the same kids as last year + my daughter who was born in March 2016.

In years past I did qualify for EIC and some years the Additional child tax credit. My income was low I worked waiting tables and attended school. This year is the first year I earned too much money to qualify for either of these credits. My schooling while taking me forever is finally starting to pay off.

I have to say since its just me and my kids I am actually proud to make it to this point. Now due to having 4 children and just barely missing the EIC income cut off I still did not owe any federal taxes and am getting everything I paid in all year back. However, last year my income was about 21K (salary) and barely anything was held out of my check all year, but my refund was $10,312!!!!!

So, when I hear people who earn 50K and have 3 kids and file head of household and don’t qualify for EIC I must say that I understand how it feels unfair. I earned under 50k with 4 kids and a 20 year old that needed help here and there and money was still tight. I am definitely better off than I was and the 10,312 helped us tremendously, but I tried to be smart with the money.

                  Thank you for the information.

You would think that if someone has claimed the same children for the past 3 years with verifiable SSN’s and everything, that there wouldn’t be an issue. Oh well. I have patience.

Additional child tax credit is if when they apply the child tax credit of 1000 you over pay your bill the overpayment part becomes you additional child tax credit as the child tax credit is not refundable

ie your owe 360 in taxes but the credit is for 1000. then your additional child tax credit would be for 640.

What is an additional child tax credit? I’ve been getting the same CTC for each child for the past 3 years. Nothing has changed. 1000 per child.

Additional CTC does not mean you had an additional child. It means you received an Additional Child Tax Credit because you did not qualify for the full CTC
