I really hate how people speak on things they know nothing about. if a person makes under a certain amount, yes they can claim earned income, and it doesnt have to be a w-2… it can be a 1099 OR self-employment (meaning a business of some sort that they file under their social security instead of getting an ein) you get more with a w-2 but still get some without.

As far as the fraud, all things done in the dark do come to light. If the IRS doesnt get her, she will lose some way or another. Im sure things go wrong for her all the time, people who tend to gain by ill-gotten means usually are always flying by the seat of their pants and are always getting caught in jams.

This is why the PathAct was created…still ain’t stopping shit…a damn shame, making it bad for all of us. My Lyft driver was even telling me how he done someone’s taxes and she wasn’t getting anything so he added some self employment… 🤦🏿‍♂️

You guys are unaware of all of the ways to claim money you didn’t earn. She probably went to an unethical work place and filed a schedule c- self employment and claimed her kids. If she put under 10,000, she most like did get the EIC and CTC. Unless they have gotten more strict, they rarely look into the file.

That not true about the earned income . I’ve known a few females to file a tax return claiming to have been a babysitter and they all got thousands back claiming their kids, and didn’t work a single day or babysit a single kid. So you’re probably right Jacob, I’ve seen it happen and it’s not fair to people who actually work their @ss off all year to get a refund.

She could be getting unemployment , worker’s comp, or some other income you don’t know about and has to file??? Not sure how that stuff works with taxes, but if she is indeed as shady as you say, why put it past her to hide compensation? Maybe you can ask her?

Income has to be verified by both sides. Employers send a W-2 and all the employer information to the IRS as well. An independent contractor or someone who is self-employed does not have earned income. They have unearned income. Unearned income is not taxed through the year as the person earns it. So most people who have unearned income throughout the year have to pay taxes and don’t get a refund. Like for example, you cannot claim the earned income credit. If you didn’t have any earned income. You can Claim exemptions, which will take how much you owe to the IRS down to zero, but only claiming credits will give you a refund, and or paying taxes through the year on your earned income, (not unearned income) will give you a refund.

Employers send earnings and tax information to the IRS. The IRS then checks your return against those numbers. She may have worked in a capacity you’re unaware of. If she files a fraudulent return, the IRS will figure it out…eventually. Tax fraud hotline is (800) 829-0433.
