I do apologize if this has been gone over ad nauseam. We have zero taxable income for this year, but we still want to file so we don’t get put onto some sort of IRS naughty list (we’ve gone over the pros and cons of doing so).

I tried to go ahead and do our taxes on TT, but it says we’re ineligible to efile since the income lines were zero, and I’ll have to do paper filing. Is TT pulling my leg? I see no reason to have to mail in a tax return that is, for all intents and purposes, blank. If TT is not being truthful, what site can I efile on?

      Thanks!

To be on the safe side, I would contact the IRS and ask them about it. The e-filing system may not recognize your filing situation and so it may be blocking your method of filing. Try calling the IRS and letting them know what is going on. They may be able to explain what is happening, and what your next steps may be.

From what I’m reading from various tax sites, you can’t efile a return with non taxable income and it will have to be mailed in. There are certain things when you efile that will red flag and will reject the return and no taxable income is one of them.
