I have seen multiple post and comments stating that if you had an education credit your refund would be delayed or reviewed or you’d be audited.

      THIS IS NOT TRUE.
That rude, uninformed rumor is from a notice that went out in 2013….I repeat 2013, about refunds with education credits being delayed because the IRS didn’t have the forms in the system until May.

IT’S FROM 2013!!!! So if anyone tries to convince you otherwise shut them down! Either they are misinformed or just being TROLLS!

I spoke with the IRS yesterday and the guy said that some returns with education credits are being delayed but not all. I think it happens every year. Or they use it as an excuse to why things take so long.

            Cibby,

That is why it is called “random review”. I am sure I was reviewed because I didn’t get to claim it last year but was able to this year.

I claimed an education credit and my money was deposited this morning 2/3/16
I have been claiming for about 3 years while I am in school

And no, I’m neither misinformed or a troll. If you haven’t talked to an IRS agent, then you are the misinformed one, further panicking people.

Have you confirmed with an agent that this is not happening?

I talked to an agent this morning who confirmed that they are reviewing some accounts that claimed the American Opportunity Credit. It is because of people fraudulently claiming the credit without the accompanying 1098T form from a school. I know this because j am one of those people being reviewed, and my return is delayed in the process.

You are right, that did begin in 2013, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t still reviewing those education credits.

And that is not to say every account that is delayed or being reviewed is because of that reason only, but I am sure a majority of them are because of the AOC.
