I had my prep fees taken out of my Federal return, using hr block home software. The IRS approved and sent my refund to hrblock’s bank, he block then forwarded the balance after fees to my bank. Unfortunately , my bank decided to reject the deposit due to it being a very new account, and inactive since I opened it, as well as the return containing my wife’s name as well. I was the primary as number on the tax return..so now, my money is essentially in limbo since the IRS technically sees no problem on their end..but hr block bank is giving me a different answer every time I call. Anyone been thru this? I’d sure be very appreciative for any help

It’ll bounce back to IRS as a rejected deposit, then IRS will send a check out to address on file. It doesn’t take as long as you might be fretting. Also, when u get the check…I wouldn’t deposit it in that acct that rejected it because they might close your account considering it’s been inactive. Go to Walmart and cash it with your wife (if it’s written to both of you) present for a modest fee.

Call your bank / credit union and ask if (1) checking account is still active (2) is the account still open.

If you filed married filing joint but that account you set the direct deposit to go into is not a joint account, then it will be rejected and you’d have to wait for the turn around time for them to print out and mail a paper check to you. This is because when they transmit that direct deposit, the check will be written as “Pay to the order of: Your Name *and* Spouse Name . That makes it non-negotiable to the account with only Your Name as the account holder.

WHEN you do receive the paper check in the mail (which you will, unless there are other issues) and you don’t have a joint account, just be present together when depositing or cashing your check. Bank / CU will have to verify both your ID’s and signature. Also, make sure you bring the copy of your 1040 (tax paper work) so they don’t put the amount on hold. Sometimes banks will do that if you do not have regular large deposits (paper check) going in your account.

            Best of luck.

Hello I had this happen maybe 4 or 5 years ago the credit union account was in my name and my husband was not on there. As soon as I found out which was the exact day it was being sent back I called IRS and I called credit union. My husband and I went to credit union and he opened up a separate account and they released money to us that day. But you have to move quick. Also do not quote me this is just my experience the IRS rep told me they had not even received my money back yet it does take time with the ACH rransfer etc. So just from our situation we were able to catch it before it made it back. You definitely should try the same.

Its changed the law several years ago. You’re wife has to be on your bank account or it is sent back.

It’ll take a week for hnr to get it back then they will send you a check.
