Hello, I filed 1/20 ang got accepted on 1/23. I checked WMR a few days ago and it says there is a delay and give code 1541. From what I read this is a pretty generic code.

      I am married filing jointly
      EIC
CTC with a new baby (3 total)
      No offsets

Never had any issues before and never had to varify anything.

Does anyone have any clue what could be causing the “delay”?

I filed on 1/22 and it shows it was accepted on 1/23. It showed accepted for several days and then after about 2 weeks it went to delay. Ive called the IRS and got multiple answers: child tax credit, eic, mistake when filing, offset. i called the offset program, nothing there, im positive that i filed my taxes correctly, and the only other thing is i claimed 3 children all of which belong to me. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I filed 1/18 accepted 1/22, went to one bar and tt 152 same day. 2/9 went to delayed alert with reference number 1541. I filed with HRB and claimed EIC and ACTC. I am unable to view the transcripts online and have not received anything from the IRS by mail or from HRB. This is a generic code that can be used for many reasons so it can mean different things for different people but I do believe that it is due to the IRS back log. To support this theory, it’s worth mentioning that some of the group that received it around the same time as me have had transcripts change to receive the refund approved code and DDD. also, I read on another 1541 thread that one lady who had a similar situation has had a WMR update to reflect her DDD. IRS has been little help for anyone who has called but I do believe that there is still some reason to remain hopeful if not even optimistic. I am not a tax expert nor do I have any type of info directly related to this issue but looking at it with an open mind and some experience with IRS problems in the past, I don’t think we have a big issue to worry about. In the past, I have been offset twice and reviewed twice. None of those times did I get this message and all of those times I was alerted by WMR and by U.S. Mail. Also, there are so many of us that have received it, most of whom are weekly, that I don’t think it’s likely or even possible that we are all being reviewed or have major issues and it is widely known that this year had major issues including the tax reform law changes and the government shutdown that severely slowed down the IRS. If anything, I would like to believe that this probably reduced the number of reviews but I seriously don’t think that it could have increased it. Given all of this, I think that we should just wait and see what happens. Any input on the thoughts and experiences of others would be greatly appreciated.

Keep in mind I filed on January 9th and got accepted 1/14. A week later I’m 1541. Been there every since.

Everything is the same for me as well. No changes in filing status and claiming my same two children also an eitc. It’s a waiting game. Pretty much we have to wait until the absolute very of of February to see any movement or money. The 1541 code is generic and it just means a delay. Nothing about your individual tax return is wrong. We have to wait. That is all. Spoke to irs twice and got the same information from both. It’s beyond frustrating I know. Nothing can be done.

I filed on 1/28/19 and was accepted on 1/29. The WMR kept saying my return has been accepted and being processed until this morning. I woke up this morning on 2/16 and saw the delay code 1541. Nothing has really changed in the last 5-6 years, so I was surprised to see it. I thought I would just cry when I saw it. Is this a result of the shutdown and tax code changes or did I make a mistake somewhere? So frustrating!!

                                  Jerry

I have the same code and I’m a little bit nervous, but I’ve looked all over this forum, Facebook forums, etc and I am thinking more and more that there are too many of us with this message for it to all be a real issue. Nothing is different in my filing for the last 5 or so years including salary, kids claimed, time of filing, etc. the only difference is that this year there was already a shortage of workers and then there was a shutdown. According to the IRS, they promise returns in 21 days. That 21 days is from date of acceptance. IRS didn’t start accepting until 1/28 even if it says earlier. 21 days from that is 2/18. I think a huge chunk of people got the code because we will be more like 30 days before our returns will Be processed.

Again – I’m just theorizing based on reading other forums – because multiple people have been told the same thing – that it’s because of FLOODS of returns and it just happened that way. I haven’t seen very many PATH returns showing actual progress.

Mine was accepted 1/24, was at processing with one bar and TT152, then on 2/11 all bars went away with TT152 and still processing to Take Action/Delay on 2/12. I’m hopeful that I will see an update on 2/18 for a 2/22 DDD. I have seen a couple others around that same date say their WMR still shows the take action but their transcripts show 846 with DDD of 2/22. I’ve also heard 2/27.

@Amy, yes that’s what we’ve all been told. Starting to think it’s all BS tho. On the other hand, there’s soooooo many of us that have it, I don’t see how it could be anything to serious. But what do I know?

It’s about time we bring the lube out and prepare to bend over ladies and gentlemen. I’ve said this for a week now and it’s not getting any better!

IS THIS TRUE???Reference code 1541 is an internal code that the IRS uses to identify returns that have been “Delayed”. This means your return was flagged and put under further review(45-60Days) or until they can get the issue resolved. This message typically means that they are holding your refund until you resolve past filling issues related to:
⦁ Adding a Dependant that someone else claimed in prior years
                                            ⦁ Back Child Support
⦁ Back taxes owed from Federal or State
⦁ Earned Income Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit
⦁ Failure to file any prior years tax return
                                            ⦁ Government Student Loans
⦁ Over Payment of Unemployment Compensation

The errors and resolutions department will look further into the tax return and try to correct the problem. If they are not able to correct the issue you will receive a letter within 30 days requesting information from the IRS

You can also contact the IRS directly at 1-800-829-1040 and mention the reference code 1541 if it has been 21 days or more since you submitted your return.

I got it and I had a baby last year too! Maybe that’s the ticket to the 1541, although if we have a Ssn number for them, the irs should be able to verify. Perhaps they are holding extra long to make sure no one else claims that’s new Ssn as well

The number of exemptions missing (Pt3, 16) and shares paid taxes when income untaxable (Pt1 #6) *did report as such on 1040* None of this changes our refund amount, but clearly misinformation. That’s normal they will release once they verify I still got my refund when I expected it.

Now my individual case i file every year with an injured spouse form as well but i always get my refund so he said he thought that it’s just a generic hold code like the 9001 code everyone had for a while waiting for our refunds to be released.
