I’m a pather. As I was going thru my taxes I see where I accidentally reclaimed the recovery rebate. Can this audit me or will they just send me the difference once they see I already have it?

i might be the last person on earth to receive my refund, but a couple of days ago i received my amended refund. I submitted my tax return on march 1 while incorrectly requested payment for the 2nd stimulus

@Conakry: If it’s only the line 30 error, IRS should fix it and continue processing. What codes are you seeing in the account transcript?

Same thing happened to me, h and r block did mine and made the mistake, I got through to the IRS and they said it could take up to 10 weeks to correct, this week I passed the 10 week mark, I don’t know what to do, plus they charged me 410 to do my taxes because I received a poor person credit it was increased, I’m asking for a refund

Okay. So i finally got an update on my income tax return. Because I made the error on line 30, I now have to pay back my stimulus check that I received back in January. Meaning I have to pay back the $1200 on line 30….in complete full. Due to my refund of 440, they are making me pay $760 instead. My question is why do i have to pay back $760 from my stimulus check because I made a simple mistake of claiming my stimulus??? can’t they just turn line 30 to 0 without charging me?
-
April 6, 2021 at 1:55 pm #4482094WowzersK
UPDATE. My line 30 is 1200 as i accidentally claimed my stimulus check from Jan. Update on the website “wheres my refund” It says i am receiving 440 but I have to pay 760 back. So that means they are making me pay back whatever the difference is between line 30 and my refund….my question is why? it makes no sense. I thought they said we don’t have to pay the stimulus back but here it is telling me to pay it back….because i made a tiny mistake on my income tax….anyone else can help?

Aha, my tax topic is back! And refund amount is gone. Don’t know when it happened because I’ve long since stopped checking every day. I think I last checked Friday or Saturday. But it’s gotta be progress!
2/12, lost bars 3/1 and screwed up line 30
-
March 24, 2021 at 6:20 am #4476644Confused Estelle
I looked on return and line 30 is blank. However, on my tax transcript it says I tried to claim it. How is that possible. I said that receive both stimulus. Anyone else is in the same boat?
-
March 19, 2021 at 8:42 am #4474507Erie M.
okay so Return approved 2/12, bars disappeared 3/2 and said processing until 3/17 when i got my tax topic 152 and my refund amount no longer shows. so i am hoping the error is fixed sooner than later.
-
March 17, 2021 at 2:42 pm #4473443Jshann3156
@Bama85
When you updated to 570 did it show on WMR or just transcripts?
I’m in the same boat as y’all. I filed 01/12, was accepted 02/10. I never lost bars and my TT has always been 152. Spoke to IRS Friday and she said it’s causing a 2 week delay. Today is 2 weeks and still no update. My stimulus shows as Status not available. This is SO frustrating. I’m literally waiting on 17k altogether
-
March 16, 2021 at 7:59 pm #4472870WowzersK
I accidentally claimed my stim. It’s been way passed 21 days now and I finally got a hold of IRS. The dude literally told me “From what I’ve been seeing lately they usually fix it for you and make you pay the remainder of the amount you claimed. OR if you are lucky they pay you the difference.”….Now im scared. I lost my job and I can’t pay that 1200 difference. Makes no sense.
PLEASE UPDATE ME ON WHAT HAPPEN TO YALL T_T

March 16, 2021 at 12:51 pm #4472679Ashley
Has anyone that made the line 30 mistake received your taxes? If so when did you file and get the return?
-
March 16, 2021 at 9:00 am #4472539JB
@jcoffey612 did your 570 go away or still there? Same boat as you. Shows processing date of 3-29 but no DDD yet. Cycle 2021-10-05.
Taxes went through Feb-12, but accountant claimed rebate by error even though I received.
3rd stim doesn’t show anything either and I am eligible. So you got a 846 with the 570 still there?
So anxious over this, thanks!!

March 16, 2021 at 6:29 am #4472457May
Still no update accepted on the 2/13th and lost bars 3/6 and still no bars with TT152…………
-
March 16, 2021 at 5:57 am #4472449Vbash
Ready through bottom to top. Same issue as everyone else. Was accepted 2/16, TT gave me a date of 3/9, and IRS still say’s processing with TN152. Anyone have an update on their’s yet?
-
March 13, 2021 at 4:51 pm #4471229Kittykat
I have not gotten tax refund yet. Stimulus is pending for Wednesday deposit. They used my 2019 tax info including my old bank account. Which thankfully I kept the card for it.
-
March 13, 2021 at 4:34 pm #4471215Nevermind the refund, here’s the stimulus
Before anyone asks, if you screwed up your line 30 and still haven’t gotten your refund, no, it does not mean you won’t get your third stimulus right away. I still don’t have my refund and my stimulus was deposited yesterday. Wait a few days before panicking and good luck.
-
March 13, 2021 at 2:45 pm #4471108May

@May
I filed sometime in January, can’t remember exact date. Was accepted 2/13. Lost bars for about 2 weeks straight (and WMR still hasn’t updated for me yet, maybe tomorrow 3/13) so my bars still haven’t returned. -
March 12, 2021 at 11:07 am #4469607
@May
I was without bars or anything on WMR for almost 3 weeks and no updates to transcripts either, other than as of date changing and codes 570 and 971. This morning when I woke up WMR still hasn’t changed, but transcripts updated to 846 code and 3/17 issue date.
-
March 12, 2021 at 11:00 am #4469599May

-
March 12, 2021 at 7:54 am #4469387Bama85
Well I got my 846 this morning. It took exactly 2 weeks to get it. Looks like they just correct it and move on
-
March 11, 2021 at 7:22 pm #4469090JA
Finally got ahold of a real person at the IRS she was very nice (no joke) but told me it could take 10 weeks unfortunately I thought the recovery rebate was asking what checks I did receive so I entered all kinds of numbers and screwed myself I’m afraid.
-
March 11, 2021 at 5:58 pm #4469062
Wes, the “bars” are on WMR (the IRS Get Refund Status tool). 1 bar is for “Return received”; 2 bars is for “Refund approved”; 3 bars is for “Refund sent.” However, those with “…still being processed…” don’t have those bars (they “lose” them).
It’s more of a horizontal bar graph with three sections.
-
March 11, 2021 at 11:23 am #4468863Wes
What is everyone talking about when they say bars?
I accidentally claimed this as well and didn’t notice the notification from Taxslayer stating that I should take a look. My refund was accepted on the 13th of Feb and is currently in the “Your tax return is still being processed.” status with no refund date. I’ve tried calling but have no idea how to even get through to a real person.
-
March 10, 2021 at 4:08 pm #4468513JACOB
Still waiting over here, but dont worry i highly doubt itll take 10 weeks, most things ive read(and when i called jackson hewett) they said about an extra 2-3 weeks. its been a week and a half longer for us so far. so ill update if it changes

-
March 10, 2021 at 11:22 am #4468370
@Renee it definitely won’t take that long. My line 30 was filled out too and the lady I spoke with on yesterday told me the same thing. I checked my tax transcripts around 5am this morning and got my transcripts along with my DDD!! I filed 1/28 and got accepted 2/12. There is hope :)
-
March 10, 2021 at 11:06 am #4468365Renee
Every single person on this post was so helpful to me. I started from the botttom and read my way up so i could understand each persons issue and understand my own.. I called IRS and realized i messed up. I didnt even notice 300 on the recovery rebate line. I thought i did everything correct. Until i seen i got back 2700 for the first stimmy but put 2400 uuggghhh they said its a easy fix but that the delay she said she had to say it take up to 10 weeks but could be before than.
-
March 10, 2021 at 11:01 am #4468362Kittykat
Anyone who got ddd today when were you accepted.
-
March 10, 2021 at 9:55 am #4468329Celena
Updated this morning with a deposit date of 3/12/2021
-
March 10, 2021 at 5:52 am #4468207
I just updated to this today. From what I was told we should get a direct deposit date on the next WMR
-
March 9, 2021 at 5:36 pm #4467512
I just got off hold with the IRS and she told me that my return was being held because of that recovery Rebate claim. So I asked her if they’ll fix it themselves and send the rest or will I have to Amend the return?….. She put me on another 5-7 minute wait 🙄 when she came back she said that they’ll fix it themselves and to expect it direct deposit by the end of this month. Fingers crossed it gets here before then 💪🏾❤️🤞🏾

@K.G: It’s hard to say definitively what the difference is, because we have such a variety of experiences, and if one person’s experience doesn’t line up with someone else’s, it might start a debate. That said, in my experience:
“We have received your return and it is being processed”
is exactly what you want to see. On the other hand:
“Your return is still being processed. A refund date will be provided when available”
means there might be (probably will be) a delay. If there’s no TT 152, the leading theory is that ID verification may be requested. But if there’s a TT 152 and the refund amount has changed, the return is in errors resolution and the refund amount may be adjusted.
-
March 9, 2021 at 12:18 pm #4467344K.G
@Thicks…. what is the difference between is being processed and is still being processed at this time of our journey…? Mine says is being processed…. accepted 2/13… no bar no TT152
-
March 9, 2021 at 11:58 am #4467335
@Sylvanas: Part of the problem is the upside-down nature of this forum’s format. Rather than reading down the page, we must read the first post then scroll to the bottom and then read our way back up. But some people don’t know to do that. If they could ever adjust the format to something more intuitive, then maybe the atmosphere here will improve.
-
March 9, 2021 at 11:45 am #4467325JACOB
probably get more answers here than actually speaking with the IRS considering they can never just give a strait answer. i hope this issue gets resolved soon for everyone, including me lol
-
March 9, 2021 at 10:01 am #4467228Celena
Pretty much same situation, I accidentally claimed the rebate, accepted the 13th, lost my bars about a week ago and went to “still processing” with refund amount displayed in the side and no tax topic. This morning it says “still processing” but on the left it says “tax period ending 12/2020” and now there is tax topic 152 displayed. So I’m going to assume I’m in the final stretch and I should be receiving a date on war soon.
-
March 9, 2021 at 5:41 am #4467099May
Lost all my bars 3/6/2021 with TT152 can someone explained what is going on??? When will we get an update????
-
March 9, 2021 at 5:01 am #4467091Sylvanas
I swear I think some people (who probably don’t use the internet much) come here and think we’re the IRS lol. Like giving their name or address, or asking “was there a mistake on my return?”
It’s kind of cute actually.
-
March 8, 2021 at 10:49 pm #4467040RJ
Just called it’s today and they said a CP12 letter coming on 3/22 and my refund won’t be released till I receive beachside I accidentally claims $1000 rebate but it was corrected and reduced $1000 is that correct I can’t see any info now on wmr after bars disappeared for like 2 weeks.
-
March 8, 2021 at 8:18 pm #4466990JACOB
not yet Jon, still waiting, our 21 days was up last wednesday, and ive heard that it take about 2 weeks after your 21 days is up.so hopefully within a week we will see it updated. jackson hewett sucks. at least the ones here do.
-
March 8, 2021 at 3:58 pm #4466852Jon
Jacob did you get your refund or no? I saw your said Jackson Hewitt released your funds. They screwed mine up also and they keep saying it wasn’t their fault and offered me $100 next years fees. Because they assume I’m an idiot and will go back next year. After the girl lied about my fees, my refund and a few other things.
-
March 8, 2021 at 2:21 pm #4466771Hmmm
I am in this same boat. Would love updates if anyone has any. I was accepted 2/12. I filed through TT. I did not select the recovery rebate credit. But, TT must of. It’s on my line 30.
-
March 8, 2021 at 11:04 am #4466613JACOB
jackson hewett held ours, told us we had to claim it, we claimed it and then they released the funds. never file through jackson hewett
-
March 8, 2021 at 10:59 am #4466605JACOB
any updates guys? we filed the 31st of january, got accepted on the 12th and have been waiting since “your return is still processing” no topic numbers
-
March 6, 2021 at 6:10 pm #4465864MajesticMa
Mines been filled also. Wish I went over everything before turning in my return. Hopefully they will correct it for me and I’ll have my return in another week or two.
-
March 6, 2021 at 4:50 pm #4465835Jaina
No @Charlotte you won’t get in trouble. A surprising number of us made the same mistake. The IRS will just correct it and move on. May be a few extra weeks though.
-
March 6, 2021 at 12:04 pm #4465721Monnie B
I claimed it as well. I was in original test batch and had bars until 2 weeks ago. Last week transcript update to 970 and 571. It told me a notice would be sent. This week it updated with a dd date of 03-10 and had the 846 code next to it. I think a lot of people who are waiting is because of claiming the rebate by accident. So it looks like it delays you about 2 weeks. fyi..wmr also updated to refund approved.
-
March 6, 2021 at 9:50 am #4465666Charlotte
Uhg, I dont know what to do. I filed with turbo tax and it filled in line 30 and gave me stimulus check recovery. I thought my tax return was suspiciously high…assumed it was something to do with the pandemic. But now my tax return hasn’t gone through and I can’t even contact the IRS. Am I going to get in trouble for this? It wasn’t even me…turbo tax filled it in for me and I stupidly didn’t double check ):
-
March 5, 2021 at 8:23 pm #4465472
I had the same thing happen to me, IRS will catch it and fix it then send you the difference.
-
March 5, 2021 at 8:17 pm #4465470
Finally got through to a live person. I was told it could take up to 10 weeks to correct and issue my refund
-
March 5, 2021 at 4:14 pm #4465341Jah
Just got off the phone with irs. I claimed recovery rebate because I didn’t receive but, irs said they sent. The agent I spoke with said it will take up to 10 weeks to verify and send out my refund with the recovery rebate.
-
March 5, 2021 at 3:50 pm #4465331JACOB
A3. No, the IRS will not reject your tax return if you made an error in calculating your 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit.
If you made a mistake on the line 30 amount, the IRS will calculate the correct amount of the Recovery Rebate Credit, make the correction to your tax return and continue processing your return. If a correction is needed, there may be a slight delay in processing your return and the IRS will send you a notice explaining any change made.
-
March 5, 2021 at 3:42 pm #4465326jacob
same issue here, its a relief to see that this error is being corrected.
-
March 5, 2021 at 1:30 pm #4465228Kittykat
I can’t view transcripts online. As I don’t have a line of credit. Which I think is dumb to need. But was accepted 2/12. Accidentally claimed credit. 3/1 lost all bars have still processing with tt152.
-
March 5, 2021 at 6:02 am #4464851Bama85
I updated but I got a 570 ☹️

-
March 5, 2021 at 3:15 am #4464795Sasha
Just a week lost, just like Roni said. I updated to a 3/10 DD tonight
-
March 4, 2021 at 10:11 pm #4464701Bama85
I’m thinking next week but I do know 1 thing I’m never using one of those refund advance places. I’ve used them 2 twice and both years it was some kind of delay with my taxes lol. Last year I was buying a house so kinda needed the money, this year I was thinking why not. But never again I don’t care what my financial situation is. You’re better of waiting right until they start accepting returns and do it yourself if you got a simple 1040
-
March 4, 2021 at 8:51 pm #4464658Neeka1986
@May unfortunately we all are still waiting to see if we get some updates soon but I think they are just confirming to see if payments was received and cashed .. it’s a verifiable so hopefully it will update tomorrow or Saturday I’m praying
-
March 4, 2021 at 8:42 pm #4464647Neeka1986
@Bama85 I don’t think it will take that long … we should start getting some updates by next week if not sooner
-
March 4, 2021 at 8:40 pm #4464643Neeka1986
I filed 1/21 .. Accepted 2/12… and I requested my transcript last week it finally updated with the 570 code but it showed a date beside it 3-15-2021. So I called the IRS and they told me it’s still processing and takes up to 1 to 2 weeks to be corrected being I filed the recovery rebate but received my stimulus check via mail late ..
-
March 4, 2021 at 8:30 pm #4464634Bama85
Same thing. Claimed the credit and 2 weeks later it showed up in the mail. I talked to the IRS today and the rep said that it was a processing error(I’m assuming it’s the rebate credit) but it had been corrected . Now what she said next was alarming. Ah said I should have it with 8 weeks but expect it much sooner is 8 weeks pass then re-file. I think she was probably just reading a generic message, but it looks like they are just fixing the mistake and sending them back to process
-
March 4, 2021 at 3:51 pm #4464505May

-
March 4, 2021 at 1:40 pm #4464454
I know when I filed I hit that I had received the rebate already but when I go back I see TT has that I didn’t so now I’m sure we will be waiting forever to get our refund I was accepted on the 12
-
March 4, 2021 at 1:11 pm #4464430Tross
I accidentally claimed the rebate credit too and I haven’t gotten an update on my taxes as well. This has made me so worried! My status says we have received your tax return and it is being processed.
I’m worried about it too -
March 2, 2021 at 11:50 pm #4463256Danielle
I did the same thing. I lost my bars last week.

February 28, 2021 at 10:09 pm #4462083re
Following. I did the same thing thinking that since my address was changed and I didn’t receive it then I should file it. Seeing now that I should have just not put it on there and request a trace I am now with no bars and the dreadful “still processing” . Calling the IRS tomorrow to see what is going to be done. No date atm.

@bry 3/3/21 but I bank with chime so I can see it being monday

February 27, 2021 at 7:41 pm #4461740
Congrats when is your DDD ?
-
February 27, 2021 at 7:09 pm #4461735Itsmymoneyandineeditnow
*UPDATE* Nothing happened. My bars on WMR moved today. So I’m pretty confident that since it’s such a common mistake the IRS is just correcting the error and adjusting the difference.
-
February 27, 2021 at 5:06 pm #4461707Jasmine
Following! I did the same
-
February 26, 2021 at 11:26 pm #4461351Dee

-
February 26, 2021 at 5:08 pm #4461190Roni
If u can see your transcripts you will be able to see where the it’s made the change. There is a 500.00 difference between what I filed and what they calculated/ I totally read the question wrong on HRB. I’m just happy they fixed it. I was worried

I have been using Turbotax for 7 years and I somehow managed to screw up on the Recovery rebate credit. It was new to me but I should’ve read it carefully. It seems I’m not the only one, I can’t even access my transcripts because I don’t have the requirements such as auto loans, credit cards so its a relief to see I’m not alone. I filed Jan 13 accepted February 10th also a pather stuck at one bar.

@Tiffany I finally got an agent who spent 30 minutes looking through my account.
She basically couldn’t see the notice generated, but she said the account is just being corrected and I shouldn’t have to do anything more, just let them finish.
But from the previous poster, it look like it took him 2 Friday’s to get his 846.
And my code says 3/15/2021 which is 2 Fridays lol so im assuming it’s just delayed by 2 weeks.

Sounds like irs is just fixing mistake. Hopefully. They told everyone if you didn’t have by January 15 you would have claim for it on taxes. We do then we get stimulus, that wasn’t right.

@rONI
Yes, mine is also delayed. I have code 570, 971 notice issues (for the adjustments)
The date I have is 3/15, so if it goes by your same 2 weeks, my transcripts should update with a 571 for DD on Mar 12th for.. March 17th? I’m not sure, I’m on hold with IRS atm -

Mine did the exact same thing. I checked yesterday wmr changed to bars disappeared, amount gone, “and still being processed ” tax topic 152 still showing. I also claimed rebate and later, after filing ,recieved stimulus check in mail. No change on wmr this am. I’m worried I’ve never had this happen.

A few people updated tonight for 3/3 or 3/8. Any of you folks who screwed up the rebate credit happen to get that update too? I can’t see my transcripts but I’m hoping we’ll all be all right now too.

Here I was hoping I wouldn’t lose bars, now I’m hoping I will lol.
Guess I’ll know my fate for the week in the next few hours.

I also accidentally claimed this, and my transcript updated today and irs just deducted the claim. So it wasn’t a big deal.

I’m looking thru Recovery credit sheet and it says multiply $xxx by number of children UNDER 17. In HRBlock I remember it asking how many children were under 17 on 12/31/20. Well I have a 17 year old and 15 year old so I answered 1. Thing is I got money back for both of them in April and 1/4/21.
The way it’s asked in the program and irs worksheet it’s going to cause issues. Basically it looks I claimed 1,100 that I shouldn’t have.

@erica Kane
Yessss exactly. I filed same day as you and everything and was accepted on 2/11. And nothing since then so I hope it doesn’t cause too much of a delay. I only did what I was instructed to do

Oh that’s great HR Block’s tax program said I qualified for it. In fact it was the only reason why I paid for the tax prep. Without that I could have filed for free. Last time I’m using them. I hope this doesn’t put me on some audit list or delay my return which has been sitting with nothing moving since accepted on 2/13

Wait, so are we not supposed to claim the credit if our transcript shows it was sent 1/4? That makes no sense. A lot of ours say that who didn’t get it because it was sent to a closed bank. The IRS said claim the credit. Better apply to us.

They posted an update on the irs website stating that they would adjust your return and it may cause a slight delay. I also claimed on accident. 2nd payment went to a closed bank acct and I still haven’t received it. Apparently they mailed it out 2/2.

@Rae…Similar thing happened to me. I checked online every single day and I kept getting the message that said payment not available. The IRS website said that if you see that message to claim the rebate on your taxes, I did that on January 29th. Then mid-February I got the stimulus payment. I’m hoping that doesn’t slow anything down. I hope they just take out the stimulus money and send me the rest

How do you accidentally claim it? Do you mean your stimulus arrived after you filed your taxes?
-
February 25, 2021 at 7:44 pm #4460458Rae
Same here. Stimulus DD was rejected by bank acct was inactive and IRS reps said a check would not be mailed out and instructed me to file and claim credit. I claimed the credit and filed and two weeks later received stimulus check in the mail. I hope they just deduct the difference.
