WHAT DOES IRS REFERENCE NUMBER 9001 REALLY MEAN?
See what happened last year with people who got Code 9001:
Thanks to our friends at College Investor, here is some more information about Reference Code 9001
“….IRS Code 9001: “Taxpayer accessed Refund Status using a secondary TIN. Refund Status could not be returned. Get a Primary TIN Analyze account and follow appropriate IRM.”
The IRS has an entire manual dedicated to errors and problems that they encounter during the course of doing business. Some of these codes are directly related to your tax return, and some are related to you something else. For the most part, codes less than 2000 are related directly to your return. Anything higher (like code 9001), it’s related to something totally different – so right there, stop freaking out…..”

I got the same as everyone else the 9001 reference code we cannot provide any information about your refund if you file an accurate and complete return you will receive your refund in about 21 days from the receive date so do that means I’ll get my refund in 21daysFebruary 13, 2019 at 11:50 am #4268271
filed 1/25. accepted 1/28. 3 days later error code 9001. called today (2/13) and irs representative said I should be getting letter in the mail and follow directions on letter. I go through this every yr. its to verify my identity.February 13, 2019 at 11:29 am #4268247
Hello and thanks for sharing all the info received by the irs.. Even that is different all the time, don’t do nothing or 9001 is a glitch or your refund have a hold or call us with the error code or wait until you receive a letter or wait until the 15th… So as I do I just stuck to the one that make me feel better lol.. And sit and wait.February 13, 2019 at 7:09 am #4267881
@kiwi I Feel so much better after reading your comment. Submitted my taxes the same day as you did (via Turbo Tax) and I’m now receiving the same message as you are, when checking the status of my deposit. I also called the IRS yesterday and received he same answer LOL.February 12, 2019 at 8:14 pm #4267447
The error code 9001 is invalid. Per IRS representative it’s nothing to call or got into an IRS office about. It’s basically an error on their part due to technical issues. If the path message is still showing that means your return is still being process. Although, my return was accepted on 1/22. The IRS does not start counting the 21 days till January 28th. Regardless to when the return was accepted. Unless your return was in the test batch. If WMR has not updated before 18th then consider on calling on 19th due to the holiday. WMR update will not show till 15th or after.February 12, 2019 at 4:55 pm #4267216
spoke to IRS today filed on 1/11/19 was accepted 1/12/19 then went to 9001 topic 152 been there ever since. called Irs 2 times prior to today and was told everything was fine that it was a error on there end both times, dont owe anyone, was told to wait 21 days and check back,I was not told to verify anything or that I would get a letter. So now they say they didnt start processiong till the 28th and the 21 days doesnt start till then also they will be closed on the 18th and all they can say now is that its PROCESSING no further info available until after the 19th of feb.February 12, 2019 at 3:52 pm #4267142
I called today in regards of code 9001. The CSR didn’t give me much info at all. He said if the msg on WMR hasn’t changed by Tuesday the 19th, Or if I haven’t received my refund by then to call back.February 12, 2019 at 3:42 pm #4267118
Filed 1/30 accepted same day
Checked wmr for the first time 2/6 and got tax 152 and 9001
Checked today and it’s still the same msg
Any info is appreciatedFebruary 12, 2019 at 3:04 pm #4267065
I was on 9001 code for a week. I called and was told it was because I filed early and to keep checking. I checked today and I’m no longer receiving that code!February 12, 2019 at 12:39 pm #4266831
To all the questions about code 9001 you have 1 of 2 issues identify your identity to the IRS or EITC lastly could be both. If you call make a appointment to the IRS office don’t wait for a letter that will delay the process. Bring your return and ID they will verify update and you’ll be all set. With all the breach of Equifax it’s a process to protect you. If you have a code 2000 or lower that is directly related to your tax return that’s when you need to worry.February 12, 2019 at 10:35 am #4266656
Good Morning everyone,
Those who have received a letter in regards to the 9001 code. Can you please provide the # you’re instructed to call for verifying identity? I have that code but have not received the letter.February 12, 2019 at 3:03 am #4266197
I filed beginning of January. It got rejected on 1/15/19
Got accepted 1/17/19. I’ve been on 9001 code ever since I called they assured me everything was ok. I called a week later they said I will receive a letter in the mail. It was sent out on 1/31/19. Still haven’t received the letter still waiting. 🤷🏽♀️February 12, 2019 at 12:00 am #4266128
I also no longer have the 9001 code. The WMR changed this weekend to stating that there is a delay in processing my return.Im waiting until after the 18th to call if there has not been any positive changes. I previously spoke to a representative at the irs and was told after viewing my refund that there were no issues and that I would be getting mine issues after the 15th. My co workers and friends also have recieved the same updates and status changes, in which she filled the 1/6 and I had filed at the 1/4. Ill post when things change on my end. Hope the best for everyone.February 11, 2019 at 10:42 pm #4266066
Anyone got any new updates on the code 9001 yet ??February 11, 2019 at 10:26 pm #4266047
I filed taxes on 1/13/19 and was approved the next day or a few days later. I did have bars on the status tool but then got the 9001 reference number. It’s been the same ever since. Today I got a letter in the mail to call and verify my information or verify online. I called and got everything verified. They said it will take 9 weeks to get my refund. I saw this happened to others and they all said it didn’t take 9 weeks, most said they got theirs 10 days letter. The 9001 code is because you need to verify your identity. Call to get that going when you see the code to speed things along.February 11, 2019 at 3:38 pm #4265638
Talk to IRS today and lady said I will receive a letter 9001 I think it is verification basically she verified me today but she couldn’t tell me when the letter was sent or when I will be getting it also said about the new system it’s a headache also talked about the earned income credit February 15th but I should wait on the letterFebruary 10, 2019 at 6:45 pm #4264722
If you receive 9001 code it means you will get a letter to verify your identityFebruary 9, 2019 at 10:42 am #4263842
I still got topic 152 but I updated to cannot provide any info at this time should receive refund in 21 days is accurate. Then it says if I have questions call and reference 9001. No transcripts are available yet.February 9, 2019 at 10:41 am #4263839
I still got topic 152 but I updated to cannot provide any info at this time should receive refund in 21 days is accurate. Then it says if I have questions call the irs and reference 9001. No transcripts available yet.February 8, 2019 at 3:19 pm #4263158
By law, the IRS cannot issue refunds before mid-February for tax returns that claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC). While the IRS will process your return when it is received, it cannot issue related refunds before mid-February. The IRS expects the earliest EITC/ACTC related refunds to be available in taxpayer bank accounts or on debit cards starting on Feb. 27, 2019, if they chose direct deposit and there are no other issues with the tax return.February 8, 2019 at 12:50 pm #4262980
Mine were accepted on 1/14/19 about 2 days later I got the ref code 9001. I’ve called several times and I’ve heard a different reason each time. I’m so confused. You would think I’m calling different places with all the different reasons I’ve gotten. Aren’t they all looking at the same thing? Frustrating at this pointFebruary 8, 2019 at 10:08 am #4262776
Hi I received the delayed code as well this morning. I was told when I called that it’s because of the eic. They should be distributed on the 18th. However that is a holiday I think so after that. They are delayed because of identity fraud. So the returns should be for sure by the 2nd to last week of the month.February 8, 2019 at 4:46 am #4262486
Is there a difference between child Tax credit & additional CHILD tax credit? I read the ACTC & EIC are different from the regular child tax credit on line 12 of the 1040. It does not say the IRS is holding taxes for the child tax credit just the ACTC & EIC correct? Has anyone gotten their taxes back that claim the child tax credit on line 12 on the 1040? The ACTC is not on the 1040 and EIC IS line 17.February 7, 2019 at 8:28 am #4261324
@becky I called the irs and after he thoroughly checked my return he said it was processed but the system is going through checking to make sure nothing is owed or anything before they release the return. He said they were checking at first to verify income but that’s complete and he doesn’t see any offsets so it’s just a last check. Hoping this helps but I would call NOW while they’re not busy and willing to help just to check.February 7, 2019 at 8:25 am #4261315
Woke up this morning with a different code 1541 process delayed!! Ugh another codeFebruary 7, 2019 at 7:18 am #4261221
I received the 1541 reference number as well on wmr this morning, Erica. Hoping it’s just because of EIC release delay. Anyone else have any ideas?February 7, 2019 at 6:53 am #4261176
Checked wmr this morning and got a new code of 1541 “there is a delay in processing my tax return” anyone else get this code??? So confusedFebruary 5, 2019 at 7:40 pm #4259164
Julie, I’ve also been with the 9001 code since the same date 1.14.19! I’ve called the IRS many times and get all kinds of different answers! Mine also hasn’t technically been processed because I don’t have a 2018 tax transcript yet! They told me the 21 days starts from January 28th, not the actual day your tax return was accepted because of the government shutdown! They also said they didn’t see anything wrong, and there’s no audit. One said a letter will be mailed for me to verify my identity on a website, yet a letter hasn’t been mailed! From what I know EVERYONE has initially received this code because of the shutdown, and who knows maybe some us will really have to verify, but I’ve received nothing yet!February 5, 2019 at 12:16 pm #4258492
I have been on code 9001 since Jan 14 I spoke to someone yesterday they said my 21 days is up tomorrow and he couldn’t see where there was an issue and that it could be an error on their end if there was a problem they would send s letter but my return is being processed. So I got no answer for what it was I verified my identity and am still stuck no transcripts just the 162 and 9001 codeFebruary 5, 2019 at 12:22 am #4257888
Accepted in 16th
I have been seeing 9001 code and 152 code!
Why?February 4, 2019 at 8:21 pm #4257724
I’ve called the IRS four times now and have received many different answers! They said my tax return has been received but not processed, there’s no transcripts available, I’m not being audited! Two reps said I’m getting a letter to verify, but when I asked “when was the letter mails?” They said nothings been mailed yet!
I’m pretty confident this 9001 code is a position we all have been put into until someone actually processes our returns, and I’m sure there will be some who we actually do have to verify! I’ve been audited before and even during my audit I was able to order a transcript pretty quickly after them receiving the return!February 4, 2019 at 11:49 am #4257264
feb. 4th called the IRS told my return was accepted and looks fine. simply told to wait til after the federal law allows for issuing the return for earned income credits. but my return was fine. i still have the error 9001 but was told to ignore it as she personally looked over my return for errors or any other issues like an offset for some payment or another. things were fine. hope it helps, i filed head house holdFebruary 4, 2019 at 10:49 am #4257174
February 4th 2019 call IRS about code 9 0 0 1 and was told I will be getting a letter in the mail to verifyFebruary 3, 2019 at 7:12 pm #4256785
I filed on 1.8.19, was accepted on 1.14.19 and still have the 9001 code! I file single no kids! I can’t order tax transcripts and when I’ve spoke with the IRS they just keep saying to wait! Mine hasn’t even been processed by anyone yet! It’s ridiculousFebruary 3, 2019 at 12:44 am #4256546
How are yall getting ddd before feb 15th with minor children as dependants thats against the federal law they cannot issue.refunds till the 15 of feb i think yall are mixing up approved date and dddFebruary 3, 2019 at 12:44 am #4256544
It can’t be that reason for me bcuz I’m single head of household with 2 kids ages 12&16.
I’ve never in all my years had this happen and it’s a crazy coincidence that it happened this year when I know half my refund is being offset for student loans 😭February 3, 2019 at 12:37 am #4256542
Mine changed ober to the same message leana got. Check back in mid feb. Tax topic 152. Before i had 9001 so i believe we have been approbed and simply.have to wait till at least feb. 15th for our ddd. I can wait though as.long as im not getting amy other codes or letters im goodFebruary 2, 2019 at 2:35 pm #4256373
My wife’s did the same thing. She filed on the 29th of January with H&R e-file. Later that evening it went to one bar indicating processing. This morning we checked again and now it says it cannot process with the code 9001 and to call and speak to a representative. I then called the 800 number and it will not process given us a 800 number and an extension. Any idea?February 2, 2019 at 2:33 pm #4256370
These post were very helpful to me because I thought something was done incorrectly because I had applied for the FastCashAdvance and they are still waiting on the acceptance of the return.February 2, 2019 at 10:02 am #4256191
Just wanted to let everyone know I was accepted on the 15th, went to 9001 the next day, this morning path appeared approved with a ddd of 2/6. Be patient! (I’m weekly)February 2, 2019 at 9:44 am #4256183
The 9001 code means you used a different primary ss number so in my case my wife ss number is the primary after putting in her ss number I got the status barFebruary 2, 2019 at 6:54 am #4256052
I filed on the 26th accepted on the 28th and checked wmr just now and it went from one bar to “we r sorry we cannot provide any information on your return. If you filed a complete and accuse return blah blah” tt152 and reference code 9001??? What does that mean??? When I check the IRS2Go app though it says entered wrong info but I didn’t?? I’m head of household same dependents as every year same self employment as years past and other income..I’m so stressed out now 🙏😩😭February 1, 2019 at 2:42 pm #4255672
Well, the irs has been open for 4 days now and still the same.screen…February 1, 2019 at 7:57 am #4255379
Anyone know how often we update or how we know if we are weekly or daily?January 31, 2019 at 4:32 pm #4255083
Got my refund yesterday. After two weeks of 9001 error code. Irs says it’s an error on their end.
So yes patience is the key.January 31, 2019 at 2:09 pm #4255028
I was accepted on 01/15 and receive the code 9001 and my changed over the weekend to this: According to the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act, the IRS cannot issue refunds before mid-February for tax returns that claim the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit. This applies to the entire refund, even the portion not associated with these credits.
Check Where’s My Refund in mid- to late February for your personalized refund status. It’s updated once a day and remains the best way to check the status of your refund.
No bars as of yet. But I’m patiently waiting.January 31, 2019 at 1:45 pm #4255018
This is my second time filing with Turbo Tax. I filed on 1/14 and my federal was accepted 1/15 – I didn’t start checking until a couple days had passed. I am now on day 6 of they have no info on my return and a code #9001.
** I do not have children, not married, and I didn’t have any credits.
Can anyone tell me how to fix it ??January 31, 2019 at 1:08 pm #4255008
Accepted 1/14, error code 9001 on 1/20. As of today, 01/31 we have ddd of 02/04. Be patient, it’ll change for y’all :) we filed married-joint with 4 kiddos, nothing extra.January 31, 2019 at 12:08 pm #4254983

Just what I made and that I supported my 18 and 15 year old throughout the yearJanuary 26, 2019 at 9:58 am #4253074
So see? Same as last year, just my first time in a test batch, seeing a code of 9001. The message will change according to your personal filing situation, for this season.January 26, 2019 at 9:53 am #4253070
This is what mine finally says:
According to the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act, the IRS cannot issue refunds before mid-February for tax returns that claim the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit. This applies to the entire refund, even the portion not associated with these credits.

Filed on 1-14
Error 9001 code until this morning.
Deposit date of: 1/30
Filed with two teenage kidsJanuary 25, 2019 at 11:38 pm #4253000
it makes perfect sense. you weren’t in a group of testing.January 25, 2019 at 5:29 pm #4252953
I’m assuming that 2 batch testings were done. I guess I was one of the lucky ones that was in batch 2. I know some people who filled before me who were not in either of the testings. Despite the shutdown I think those who filled early will get processed quickly starting Monday.January 25, 2019 at 4:14 pm #4252932
thats crazy i filed on the 11th accepted on 14th and still cant track my info no credits basic return as you can gett others after me that got accepted can track theres with a dd makes no sense at allJanuary 25, 2019 at 11:24 am #4252841
I filed early with turbo tax. Was accepted on the 10th…showed that bar for a few days, and now i am getting the no info with 9001 code. Still the same as of today. Guess i just gotta be patient and cross my fingers. Nothing has changed and i have used Turbo tax for yearsJanuary 25, 2019 at 7:17 am #4252813
Update. I filled on 1/10 and was accepted on 1/16 noon. I had no credits or anything like that. My tax transcript for 2018 show my refund is scheduled for 1/30. The WMRT is not updated yet. It is still showing the 125/9001 message. I do know that my cycle is 2019405 which means I’m weekly rather than daily. I assume by tomorrow morning WMRT will be updated.January 25, 2019 at 1:02 am #4252795
also simple basic returns “may” go through. may is the key word. ffsJanuary 25, 2019 at 1:00 am #4252794
the gates don’t open until the 28th so you shouldnt be worked up. how are you going to expect your refund when they haven’t even officially started.same deal every year.January 24, 2019 at 9:32 pm #4252780
I filed 1/11 using TaxACT. Accepted 1/14. Typical one-bar page for a day or two then it changed to the 9001 Code page. Mine is a simple return…I file single with two 1099Rs and standard deductions. My status did not update last night even though others who filed and were accepted after me awoke to two bars and a ddd of 1/28. That includes one person who used TaxACT and filed a joint return. My autistic brain is having a tough time understanding this but I have learned to talk myself down.January 24, 2019 at 7:38 pm #4252769
Mine was accepted on the 14th, still got the 9001 code. Pretty simple return, stays consistent each year. I file as a business owner, and claim eitc, so making popcorn and watching. The message will change accordingly, so with IRS being stressed over their current situation, I agree we should reserve phone assistance for those experiencing urgent matters.January 24, 2019 at 1:19 pm #4252710
people stop calling for this. your tying up the lines for ppl that have legitimate issues. especially eitc refunds, we must just wait and start tracking it after the 28th. simple basic returns may go thru as test batch so be happy with thatJanuary 24, 2019 at 10:39 am #4252681
Originally had error code 9001. Filed on 1/14. Accepted 1/14. As of today, I am now able to track my status again and will be receiving my refund on 1/28.January 24, 2019 at 9:18 am #4252674
I filed my return on 1/14, was accepted on 1/15 and started getting code 9001 the next morning. Called the IRS on 1/22 and was told not to worry about anything that everything was still processing and that was more than likely the reason i was seeing the code. They said you should only worry if you filed electronically and the 21 days had passed and you had not received your return. This morning my bars were back, estimated DD of 1/28.
