If an individual owes money to the federal government because of a delinquent debt, the Treasury Department can offset that individual’s federal payment or withhold the entire amount to satisfy the debt.
Child support offset
My ex husband owes thousands in back child support. He had gotten a letter saying his taxes were going to be offset in order to pay for back child support. He then had his girlfriend file her taxes and claim him as a dependent, in order to not lose his return to child support. There is no way he made under $3200 for the year, how could he get away with being claimed? Then to top it off he said his girlfriend owed the Irs money so the money she received for claiming him as a dependent went towards the money she already owed the IRS, instead of coming to me for the care of our child. Is there anything I can do?
