Those With Offset and in Rehab for US Edu

I spoke to a really nice gentleman today at the Dept of Edu. He had informed how the rehab program and offsets work. If you haven’t filed, don’t. He said after 5 payments the offset of your taxes are removed, however it’s a takes like 3 weeks for it to be removed completely. He also informed me that when you make that 5th payment you will receive a letter in the mail from the collection agency your loan is with telling you this information. He then said circle the date the letter was sent and count three weeks from then and that will be the date you will see it removed. He said so if you have filed wait as long as you can and even file for an extension if you can. I have two loans out there one my 5th payment is March and my second the 5th payment is May. However he said if you do file, of course you can file for hardship, or injured spouse. Hopes this helps someone.
