Where’s My Refund?

You have questions, we have answers.

key tax return and refund dates

When can you file your taxes?

You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a ā€œqueueā€ and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.

Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.

When does the IRS accept tax returns?

The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.

The IRS will begin accepting tax returns in 2025 on January 27th.

When is the IRS test batch?

If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.

When will I get my tax refund?

Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.

Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?

The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.

A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

talk to a human

It is often hard to reach someone at the IRS and you might want to talk to a person. It is hard to reach some tax preparation companies too. Use our guide to talk to a human at the IRS.

TAX TOPIC 152

Tax Topic 152 is the most common status when you check the status of your tax refund. It is nothing to worry about.

transcript codes

Transaction Codes (TC) sometimes called transcript codes consist of three digits and may appear on your IRS account transcript. Decipher the codes on your IRS transcripts.

reference codes

Most times the Wherer’s My Refund tool (WMR) will show Tax Topic 152. Other times you may see various error codes. These are called Reference Codes on the WMR.

@jemar707: Good to see you as always. Personally, for me I think this if the 1st year I EVER processed this quickly. Accepted the 21, approved with DDD 1/29 today. So three days to process. If I used chime I would have it Monday. BOA of course doesn’t release early lol.

    • I Got My Refund!

@Txmomof3girlsnotsignedin: I know! I imported my W2’s on both sites and triple checked that the amounts were the same. Made sure all my credits matched, etc…..everything was the same. My federal was around $400 less, and my state was around $400 less too….totaling that $800 difference. H&R didn’t charge me any fees either like TT does, so I hope it pays off (pun intended) šŸ˜‰

@Honeybee82: that’s crazy about the difference! I wonder what the $800 difference is from.

I promise I wouldn’t file early but I filed anyway. My return was accepted today and WMR shows one bar saying the tax return has been received and is being processed. (Pather). Now it begins. Best of luck to everyone.

@Eriona: lol I completely understand!! I’m hoping the fact that I’ve used H&R before won’t trigger any kind of flag….especially since I just verified my ID last year! There was just no way I was settling for $800 less by using TT again! Plus, I wasn’t tempted to get the advance again…so I won’t have to wait longer for the fees to process through SBTPG. As long as I don’t get flagged again, this should be a lot smoother year! I’m hoping you don’t either! 😊

    • I Got My Refund!

@Txmomof3girlsnotsignedin: I hope it doesn’t come back to haunt me again, because I changed my tax preparer this year. I used TT last year and H&R this year, only because TT was calculating my refund to be like $800 less than H&R…even though I had the exact same information entered in both. For some reason TT was shorting me and I couldn’t figure out why, so I went with H&R lol

    Reply
  32. Txmomof3girlsnotsignedin

@Honeybee82: I had to ID verify last year too. This year I did not change anything, last year I changed banking info and that’s why I was flagged.

Just got noticed that my return was accepted by IRS. I was trying to miss the boat on the early filers this year. I’m a weekly and path walker so I do not anticipate an update until the 7th of February. I typically miss the 1st round of updates for whatever reason.
