Just wanted to make a topic for people to go to when they have been put under review and share their experiences.

Filed 1/12 HRB online. Accepted 1/30. I was processing 1/30,1/31, and 2/1 and finally updated to this:
We have received your tax return and it is being reviewed. You will receive a notice from us requesting additional information within 30 calendar days. You may not receive all or part of your refund until we receive and review the information we requested. If you need more information after you receive our notice, call the number on the notice.
Please do not contact us until you have received the notice as we are unable to take any action until then.

I used TurboTax to file 2013 taxes. I decided to paper file because I have an Injured Spouse Form I have to do every year because my wife forclosed on her house before we got married.

I mailed the taxes with the Injured Spouse form on 1/12/14. I got notice from Where’s My Refund that papers were received 2 weeks later. Next day, it said processing.
Months go by, and no word from the IRS, no status update. My wife called and the lady said they have until 6/12/2014 to handle Injured Spouse Allocations. It is now 6/20/2014. 1 week after their deadline, my wife called again, and they said they were waiting on a document to be sent from another office (really vague).
    I’m still “processing”.

Who is holding these people accountable? Why is this so difficult? I’ve been waiting for ages to get my refund and the result is I have now been sued, because I was planning on using this money to pay off some debts. Now I’m screwed! Thanks IRS, go suck an egg.

Super User EPO39b…did you get a commission for that useless info you posted?

I eFiled my 2013 return through H & R Block on Jan 22nd 2014. The return was accepted by the IRS on Jan 31st. I received a letter the first week in March dated Feb 24th that my return had been selected for verification and that I was to do nothing at that time and that the verification would be resolved in 60 days, at which point I should contact the IRS. 60+ days later I contact the IRS. I am informed that a referral letter will be sent to the IVO (Integrity& Verification Office) that they have ANOTHER 30 days to conclude the verification and release my refund. It is now the second week in May and I still have not received my refund. Every phone call to the IRS office takes 45 minutes of wait time to speak to a live person and then I am told that they have to wait for the referral to expire before any action can occur. I contacted the Tax Payer Advocate for assistance in this matter. A WASTE OF TIME. My humble opinion is that the Tax Payer Advocate is a Federally funded “hand holding” measure that does NOTHING that will actually benefit anyone.

I was laid off 2 years ago and returned to college as a full time student. A significant part of my financial budget for this semester was that tax refund. Now I am behind in my bills. I owe friends and family money. My auto insurance has lapsed due to non payment. I got a title loan on my 2001 car mistakenly thinking that surely the IRS would not need OVER 3 MONTHS to make a phone call or ask my former employer for documentation. They proved me wrong.

I am now a committed advocate to abolishing the IRS forever. The day that happens? Good luck with those extended emergency unemployment benefit forms you Jerks.

Good luck folks! They pulled mine for 2012 saying it was under review, then sent me a list of info they wanted proving every penny of my income and other things – basically a very lazy way of auditing me. I sent it all in and they denied it. I called and was told that they are withholding the refund but are holding me accountable for the taxes. It doesn’t even seem legal to me. I sent in an appeal and have heard nothing. Now, just filed my 2013 taxes and it is also under review. I don’t expect much from them. Fortunately I just moved out of Michigan and never plan to return, but if I was living there I wouldn’t even bother.

I filed 2/5/2014 it got accepted 2/6, when I checked the IRS the bar was on stage 1 and on 2/23/14 the bar stop showing and now all it says is Your tax return is still being processed. A refund date will be provided when available. There is nothing under notes. I spoke to a rep today and he said mine was pulled for review- it should take up to 8 weeks. So by April 18. 14. He didn’t say anything about red flags or a letter. This year I did file married joint and this is the first year me and my husband did it. SO I am hoping its that. I have no idea what else it could be. SMH it does suck that the IRS can take their time to issue our checks but are so fast to take every penny before we even see it. but I guess that’s life.. smh

I got the code 1252 last year with the message of tax topic 152 and stating I would receive something in the mail and not to contact the irs until I did so. It ended up being a correspondence audit, over the EIC, which baffled me as all my prior returns the last few years have been pretty similar, but to give everyone a heads up I waited to receive the letter and it asked for documents to prove I was HOH such as bg&e bills, rent receipts, etc and to prove my children lived with my all year I had to get letters from their school and pediatrician on their letterheads (IRS was very specific about that)! I filed on 2/22, received irs letter 3/12, mailed documents certified on 3/31 and heard nothing back whatsoever and then out of nowhere my entire refund I was supposed to receive was direct deposited in my account at the end of July….yes the end of July!!! Needless to say I was happy to receive it but it was a huge headache and this year I have yet to file-I want to but nervous it will happen all over again, since I read stories about people having this happen to them for several consecutive years! Hope this info helps someone, I know last year this site was my saving grace while I was going through my tax refund hell! Best luck to you all!

I am a first time filer I E-Filed on Jan 30. 2014 through Turbo Tax a week or 2 later I got this message:

We have received your tax return and it is being reviewed. You will receive a notice from us requesting additional information within 30 calendar days. You may not receive all or part of your refund until we receive and review the information we requested. If you need more information after you receive our notice, call the number on the notice.

So I called 1.866.897.3315 on 02.18.2014 because I have not gotten a letter or anything yet but I do owe 400.00 in student loans now I was on hold for quite some time after being on hold the phone kept hanging up I kept calling back until I spoke to Ms. Parker I.D. Number 100161269 who advised me that
Can not release refund because of the student loan from 2008 so they are going to pay the student loan off first then I should receive my return she did not have a DD but she was very helpful she actually called me back and told me to call this number 1 866.897.0177 so I called this is about the earned income credit that is what the recording says I was on hold for a long time before I spoke to Vincent Price I.D. Number 1002778713 who advised me that there is nothing in the system for me right but if I am selected for an audit and usually if you claim a dependent for the first time you will be audited then I will need to fax in additional information but he told me to give it another week to see if I get a letter saying I am being audited he was very nice and helpful..

I am currently under review, my taxes accepted 2/15, received notice that i needed to send in ‘verification’ papers for the EIC/dependent credits, faxed them in and they received 3/13, called at least once a week to twice a week, its been over 45 days and they say it still hasnt been reviewed yet.All they can say is they get lots of paperwork and are still working on the ones from the end of February/beginning of March. Really?!!! Are they really that dumb or that understaffed. This is VERY frustrating as everytime i call they say it should be done next week, then i hear the same thing the week after, then they tell me day 45 it should be done. What BS!

I was put under “extended review”. I contacted the IRS and was told that I was under review. I was informed that I should expect a letter that would detail what is needed and the exact reason for the review.
I received a letter 3 days later stating I was under review and that they needed nothing from me.
I contacted the tax advocate line and explained my situation. She stated that I would be contacted in three days.
Four days later (6 if you included the weekend), I received a call from a tax advocate.
She stated I needed to provide proof of my employment with my claimed 6 employers. The Lady then told me to obtain 6 letters on company letterhead from each of the employers. When asked why the W2s were not sufficient she said they can be faked. I was also told that employers were given longer to file the w2 and that is why a lot of us are under review. Over the course of trying to obtain these letters (2 of which I was able to obtain) I found out from her that only 2 letters were actually needed. Unfortunately they were not the ones obtained.
I am trying to keep this short but yet detailed. I am still battling

Okay so an update on my situation. Reviewed for HOH and EIC. After faxing all my info and waiting the prescribed 2 weeks from the date the advocate sent it to irs review department, I got a phone call this morning saying that they approved my refund, that the info I sent was sufficient (33 pages). Now they have to input it back into the computer system and let it process, wait 21 days, which I think is BS because I have my return transcript with the full credit on it. I know that my refund has been processed and is awaiting them to release it, which I hope takes less than a week. TAS is a load of crap, I sent in a three day notice with my info and it has been 3 weeks already, the review department took the entire two weeks that they had to approve and now I am just waiting again. Seems to me they could have just looked at the info and released the refund by now. Guess I should consider myself blessed that I do not have to wait 45 or 60 days like some people are. it is hard though to consider oneself blessed when facing eviction. Next year I will definitely not plan on using my refund for essentials, then I will not have this problem.

    ~$1100 return, EIC, no dependents, 1 W2

    2/1 – Still being processed
2/19 – Status changed to “Your tax return is still being processed. A refund date will be provided when available.”
2/25 – I haven’t been able to see the status on the WMR page
2/28 – Finally called IRS and found out I am under review and could be for 4-6 weeks. Still can’t order transcripts. No letters received in the mail.

That seems like a pretty long time frame to look over something that simple. I thought they would check for accuracy when they processed it, but apparently not. Hopefully it will be done sooner, but I’m pretty sure it wont.

On a side note, I mailed in an amended 2011 return a week after e-filing my 2012 return and will receive a check for that in less than a week. Maybe filing electronically isn’t the way to go anymore.

@ccs753 I think it is just a process as I faxed over all my docs last week and she told me she sent my information over and asked everything to be completed by 2/27. She told me we were scheduled to talk again on 3/4 but I could call her on 2/28. This to me sounds better than 60 days the letter is saying it may take. Hopefully it will all get done sooner for you.

it is insane, I send over all information requested to the tax advocate, along with a 3 day notice to pay rent or quit. Then she asks for the letter the IRS sent me, so I fax that also, now the faxed paperwork they have received is 33 pages. When I call to confirm that she received the fax she tells me yes and she will send the info over either this day or the next and I should expect to hear from her by March 6. What part of 3 day notice does she not understand?? How freaking long can it take to verify the info and release the funds, my refund is already credited to my account just let it go already.

How do you know if you are REALLY under review? F/a 1/30, had orange status bar until a week ago then went to processing reveiw date when available. Ordered transcripts 2 weeks ago, recieved them a week ago. That had a date of 2/25 on it. Not sure about any codes on there though. Called IRS Friday and they told us it’s under review, to expect a letter sent out on March 4th. Looks like a lot of you already have letters or notices on wmr but so far nothing like that here. Really frustrated waiting!

Nothing new our Tax Advocate called back Friday. Wanted us to fax her a copy of our taxes, review letter, w-2, last paycheck stub of the year.
So I got that all faxed over Friday afternoon. So now we wait some more.

I have a question for everyone who got the CP05 letter.
At the top does it say:
Important information about Combat Zone tax deferment
We’re holding your refund until we finish reviewing your tax return

Just what the hell is combat zone tax deferment?

good evening all thought I would update you on what’s going on: 2/20/12 received state refund… was able to order return transcript either the 20-22 unsure of what date now… 2/21 called finally and talked to a very nice lady… (asked to check if my DD information was correct) said I had a issue with my state being deposited (lie) she verified my info was correct then I asked if she could see a DD date. No she said that my return was on hold but couldn’t tell me why…smh then she asked if I received a letter on the 26th I stated no I never got a letter (lie)…. she told me to look for a DD sometime around the beginning of next month and it could take up to 60 days from the 31…..which puts it at about easter sunday… I have decided to give up on getting a refund cause at this rate it doesn’t look like I am getting one… WMR still says the same a refund date will be blah blah blah…. but if I get a change I will let you know… I’m done

Hi everyone. So I am in the same boat as everyone. I filed on the 30th and then got a 4464c letter in the mail with no code. It was dated 2/5/2013. I did call the holds dept. and the lady i spoke with said there were no holds.

For the whole time i was getting the generic 21 day message, but yesterday it changed to the will give me a dd when available.

Well, today I was able to order a return transcript (finally). IDK if that mean Im done processing or if I am going to see a dd soon but just wanted to let everyone know my story. Hopefully I get a dd soon, then we will know there is hope.

they will holly…call came in as four #’s…like 4702 was the numbber that showed up on myphone..

he told me it looked like they were trying to verify my income…last year, 2011, i started my job..had a little unemployment…total income was only 4k..
well i’ve had this job all year…16k income…4x income, no withhnoldings..i never have withholdings bbut the increase in comne from the same job flagged me…guess i’m being punished for working more. Lame.

I asked him about my dependants if hge wanted proof of them..he said NO!, only flag is income..

My point is this..i have come to a conclusion…
We all got flagged but for a reason, however small or pointless..The system is very sensitive i guess and change is bad, even if it betters your family..

I have to wait and get a copy of my last years pay stub from are payroll department ikn another state..fun like a week i’m sure..
going to fax him my disconnect notice though tonight..he said he would give this information to them in the morning and call me back..

Same here I am waiting to speak with advocate tomorrow but faxed over W-2 as that is all I had besides my 2 kids … received 4464c dated Feb 1 but talked to rep today in holds department and she said that a freeze code will post to my account on 3-4-12 and last 11 cycles or until mid May. Told me best bet is to go through advocate to try and shorten the verification of my W-2 and employment and communicate directly to the reviewer or reviewing department. I have only had the same job for 10 years… and 1 child for 12 years and other child for 2 years. Should not take 60+ days to verify information.

    Filed 1/22
    Accepted 1/26
    Processing since 1/31
    ordered transcripts 2/1 (both)
Called IRS three times was told everything look fine just still processing /:
Knew something was wronge seeing as how my brother I law filed last week and received his today!!!
Called and spoke with a very nice lady. She told me my refund had been aproved but had a he on it. So she transferred me to the holds department and from their I was told they didn’t see anything! Was transferred back to customer service and hung up on. Called back this time straight to the holds department.. The lady I spoke with was really short with me. She stated my refund amount and that it had a hold she wouldn’t tell me why just that I should be receiving a 4464c letter then hung up on me!
Recieved CP05 letter today (dated 2/25)!! Says they dont need any information from me at this time!! Looked at account and return transcripts and im noticing a date of 4/15/2013 on both of them… Account transcripts say
Return due date or return recieved dat (whichever is later)] 4/15/13
    Processing Date 2/18/2013
    WTF!!!!!!!

I posted earlier what my letter said when I received it. I have the take action notice under review….. If you are under review you will probably be getting the CP75 LETTER telling you you need to gather info and mail or fax it to them. You can go back and try to find my previous post or do a quick google search for that code so you can start getting together what you need. Goodluck everyone. Oh and I saw someone asking about 1242 and it means it is on hold and will be released when the receive the specific info they are asking for and if you don’t respond they will just stop the payment for whatever is being held.

I am under review and was told my letter was sent out on January 31st. WTF, that early!? I was able to order both transcripts yesterday. I never received a letter and they told me they do not need any info, just to drew if I will get it by the 31st of March and if not they may need some more info. I filed HOH, 1 dependent and my pay had changed tremendously due to me finding work. I know my pay is the reason for the flag, but I have proof and hate that it is taking so long to let it go!

I have been under review for 2 weeks, got my letter after I had contacted the tax advocate to help me out. i am being reviewed for EIC, HOH, and dependents. Yesterday I sent a 30 page fax to the advocate, including a 3 day notice from my landlord. Told her I had a week to come up with $3k from my $7k refund or would be taken to court and me and my 2 year old developmentally disabled nephew and 15 year old daughter would be facing eviction. She said it could take up to 4 weeks but would try to get a manual release of the $3k. Same exact filing as last year, this is such BS. for those of you who are really under review for EIC or HOH, start getting your paperwork together, and if you have a legitimate hardship get in touch with a tax advocate.

It would be stupid to see a 21 day message when its been 25 days or more. I wish I could look at it positively but I think it’s just the IRS covering its ass. @pb “1242 is a “reserved” delay code. The IRS does not publicize the reason behind it. There are many possible reasons but the EIC seems to be a very common area. Nothing has changed here WMR still says the same message it has said from day one
    Refund Status Results

Your tax return is still being processed.

A refund date will be provided when available.
    Please Note:
For refund information, please continue to check here, or use our free mobile app, IRS2Go. Updates to refund status are made no more than once a day.

It has always said this. The only thing different is it now lists my refund amount on the bottom left and the info about 152 or whatever is gone now.

Friday we were told our refund was done processing but is being held for review and this can still take until April >.< Talked to the tax advocate and he said he don't see anything different from the last few years he doesn't understand why we are being reviewed when even the income isn't that much different.

    @charity I found this…

he IRS developed and implemented identity theft indicator codes to centrally mark and track identity theft incidents. Each indicator is input on affected taxpayers’ accounts using Transaction Code 971 with any of six different action codes.[5] The IRS currently uses these identity theft indicators to gather IRS-wide identity theft data for reporting taxpayers affected and identity theft incidents. For example, the IRS inputs Transaction Code 971 with the following action codes:

    · Action Code 501 – used when the taxpayer reported the identity theft. It is input after the IRS confirms a taxpayer is a victim of identity theft and resolves the case.

    · Action Code 506 – used when the IRS identifies and confirms a taxpayer who is an identity theft victim.

    · Action Code 522 – used when the IRS receives a taxpayer’s identifying documentation.[6]

The amnt of your refund should have nothing to do with any holds unless its very different then previous amnts. Just cuz it’s a large number won’t raise eyebrows if your income is large enough to justify it & its not a great deal more then prior refunds. I know a number of people w $20K – $35K refunds and they have ALL gotten them already (EXCEPT ME,!!!!)

    just posting my timeline again:
    1/28 – filed
1/28 – accepted 11 hrs later from filing
1/30 – around 10pm finally got a status on Where’s My Refund (WMR) with ‘Return Received’ (1 bar) & still processing
1/31 – ordered acct transcript but couldn’t order return transcript
2/6 – received acct transcript & 4464 c letter (dated 2/4) & has no code on it whatsoever. it had no action required. Where’s My Refund (WMR) still the same.
2/14 – wmr had no status bar but still the same msg w/return received.
2/16 – wmr still had no bar but msg changed to Your tax return is still being processed. A refund date will be provided when available. i ordered another acct transcript to see if i get any codes because my transcript had nothing on it…it was blank w/a processing date of 2/18th. i still can’t order the return transcript.

That’s the catch. That’s what’s unfair. We weren’t pulled due to suspiscious activity, we weren’t even pulled randomly. It wasnt even a few of us. It was 99% of early filers. We were pulled AUTOMATICALLY by a sensitive and faulty system that could have been worked out before hand. The IRS could acknowledge this and do something about it but they won’t. That’s what pisses me off.

Im so pissed I could blow a gasket… We dont deserve this bullshit!!! If they need proof of our kids then simply ask us questions instead of making us suffer… I truly believe that its just gonna get worse when it comes to helping hard working americans!!! Guess its time to quit the 9-5, get on welfare, get foodstamps, and get housing from the government cause it seems like the lazier you are the more the government cares and helps, they dont give a shit about the hard working tax paying middle class that actually TRY to provide for our family… SORRY, just all worked up cause I took a vacation from work based on tax season and promised my kids a “just for them” trip that I dont see happening now…

He didn’t see anything that would make them select us for review. Especially since nothing changed from last year to this year and we have a simple return.

Okay to fix what I said previously. I got my letter today. Code CP75 tax year 2012 notice date February 18, 2013. It states: we’re auditing your 2012 form 1040A. We need us to send you information to support items you claimed on your tax return. We are holding the Earned Income Credit (EIC) and/or the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) portion(s) of your refund pending the results of the audit. Be sure to respond within 30 days from the date of this notice or we’ll disallow the item being audited, and you may owe additional tax.

Then it gives me a bunch of info on what I need for proof. Nothing has changed in the past few year which before that the only thing is a change of address 3 years ago. I just want this to be over and want my money but it looks like its going to be a while. Ugh!

I have still received no letter. I have been told I am in review but not what for, and wmr showing still processing with topic 152. I filed on the 30th. I think things will start looking up for a lot of us this next week I think the irs is just behind….a girl I work with said wmr TOLD her she was in review last year…she never called the irs or recieved a letter. 3 weeks later she had her refund.

I still got an advocate and sent her everything I needed to her today. (I assumed that would be the same information another poster on here was advised to send to their advocate…so I went ahead and sent it all to her even though we have never actually spoke I just missed her call yesterday and called her back and got her fax # from her vm.)

I really hope this works out for all of us soon!

My WMR has changed for the first time since the 31st to the A refund date will be provided when available message. So if it can change to that why would it not updat to inform all of us that we are under review. To be honest I am happy to see any type of change at this point.

    Filed 1/24
    Thru TT
    Accepted 1/27
WMR,IRS2GO and Hotline still all show processing never changed.
Ordered both transcripts about a week ago
Called IRS, 1st time…”no problems, its still just processing”
Called IRS, 2nd time, actually got someone to look up my info “You have been selected for review”
Called Holds Department….”We see no holds or anything on your refund, its just processing”
Called Examination Department….”We see it is under review but we have no idea why and it shows nothing that indicates it will come to our department. They might just look at it and see that you filed the same way for 6 years and just release it”
Called Tax Advocate….”Yes, we see its under review..we’ll start a case for you” Waiting to hear back

So thats my story. 1 dependent, filed the same way for 6 years, no letter, no codes, all the sites have not changed once this entire time

    @Marrisa1975…

I do believe your theory personally that they are holding larger refunds in some cases for the maximum 21 days. My refund is over $8k same as last year (which I received in about 10-14 days in 2012). I was accepted on 25th but IRS says accepted on 1/28 and my status just changed to “Processing date will be given when available” for the first time this week I believe on Monday morning. I finally was able to order a return transcript this morning where I was not able to last night. I have talked to examinations department as recently as yesterday, hold department, have a tax advocate and no one sees my letter 4464c in the system or says I am in review. The letter is dated 2/1 and I don’t mention it in the beginning. I have had times when I asked them to go over my account.. no debt indicators, no flags, no holds, just processing. I then ask why letter 4464c then I get put on hold and some have asked me as of yesterday in examination department to read the letter to them which I find funny since it is their letter.

    ordered transcripts 2/1 (both)
Called IRS three times was told everything look fine just processing /: finally was told I had a hold/freeze on refund (approved and processed) Wasn’t told why just to expect a 4464c letter! That was 2/13! I have been pissed because we file the same way every year except this year my husband made less money due to work being slow and missing a whole month while I was in the hospital to have our little girl (sever preeclampsia)! Well by him not working as much and with 3 dependents we were getting our largest refund EVER 9k+,,,,, BUT AS OF TODAY Where’s My Refund (WMR) has changes its message first time since 1/31! Processing date will be given when avalible!!!!! Please please please some one tell me does this mean they are going to real ease the money soon????? Examinations department couldn’t find any hard/master codes to tell us why it was frozen.. (I believe it had to do with us filing early and identity theft,, wanted us to wait 21 days just to make sure no one try’s to use same SS#)

I have been lurking this site all week & was surprised to find so many in the same boat as myself! Ugh!! Here goes:

    Filed: 1/30/13 11:30am EST
    Thru: TT
    State: SC
    Accepted: 1/30/13 4:11pm EST
Letter: 4464 dated 2/4/13 code is 0, do nothing it says
    Calls to IRS: none
    DD?: none yet
    Refund size: $7k
Claimed: HOH, EIC, 2 Dep, no school

One thing that I haven’t seen from anyone is this: I began to check WMR about 30 minutes later & was showing up! I received email from TT that my return was accepted, so I went back to WMR and the orange bar was on approved!!! I said to myself, “Dang, they are moving fast as h3ll this year. I might have a DD in the morning.”!! It stayed that way until the following day sometime, but that night it was back to the first bar…accepted. I checked the mail on the 6th & there was the IRS letter dated 2/4/13. My WMR has stayed the same besides the times I get locked out & nothing populates for me. Has ANYONE who received LTR 4464 code 0 actually gotten a DD and/or ur money yet? :-(

I got the reference code 9001 last Friday and called and was told my tax return was under review. I wasn’t able to order an account or tax transcript with my new address either. They told me to wait 60 days and I received the 4464c in mail. I just checked the transcript hotline and was able to order an account transcript with my new address. Hopefully this means something good. I filed 2/2/2013 with HRB.

It was a CP05 and it said by April 11th… WMR and the hotline still say processing and I called the IRS twice today, the first time I asked about the letter and the rep said it could still come within the 21 days, the second time I called I just played stupid and said nothing about the letter- I asked if I had any offsets or any other issues and the lady looked up my return and said that its still processing with no offsets and said NOTHING about the review… I notice a lot of people that had a message on WMR about the review and letter but mine hasnt changed (except for it went from having the orange bar saying “PROCESSING”) to no orange bar saing ” Your refund is still being processed and a dd will be given when available”.

Ok here’s my processing review story from hell…. Filed 1/17, accepted early on 1/24…. Started checking wmr on 1/30 said processing, allow 21 days. Starting 2/5 when I saw other people getting there deposits that filed after me I started calling IRS. Spoke with a different rep each day for 4 days, all looked up my acct and told me everything was fine and I was just processing… On 2/9 I called the tax advocate line and was told the same b.s. about processing and allow 21 days.. On the 10th I recieved a letter in the mail dated 2/1 stating I was under review and to wait 60 days and they will send me another letter if they need any additional info… So meanwhile I talked to 4 different reps and told everything was fine and i was just processing but in all reality I was already under review with a letter in the mail … So I am behind on my rent this month from losing my job and called the tax advocate line. They filed a case for me and assigned a tax advocate for me on Tuesday and told me that by Thursday I would recieve a call from my tax advocate. The next day I recieved a call from the rep , which was yesterday, and she informed me that in order to try to hurry any process along, she needed me to fax her my proof of hardship, my w2s and last three pays tubs for each w2. I faxed her everything today and she called me an hour later to confirm receiving it and told me she will have the proof submitted to IRS and find out what else they need but even with a tax advocate, the IRS still has up to 3 weeks to complete your case. So at least there is a little relief knowing that it can only be anther 3 weeks… As far as wmr, since 1/30 wmr, hotline and app have all shown processing with 21 days message. On 2/12 I was able to order both transcripts and status changed to still processing, date will be given when available…. But I know I’m still in review. So just to share some knowledge about my experience

Okay so just to update my info.. Filed 2/17 accepted 2/25 I was getting the 21 day message on WMR then on the 2nd it changed to Take Action your return is under review. IRS2go gives no reference code but same message. I received a partial refund ( for the federal portion of return) on Feb 5 just before 3 p.m. CST. I got an E-mail from Turbo Tax AFTER I received those funds telling me they will be available 2 days later. So far no letter in the mail and updates. Now obviously the IRS and the companies we filed through aren’t on the same page BUT anyone who used Turbo Tax is your status showing that you will receive your refund by 2/18?

My bar never disappeared nor did the message ever change prior to the ddd. It went straight from the original 1 bar and processing 21 day message to a ddd. I’m just trying not to get my hopes up or anything because until my refund is in my account I’m not going to count on anything.
So like a lot of people have suggested or straight out said I too wonder if the people answering our calls at the good ol IRS are not tellin us stuff just to get off the phone or reading off a script.
Oh and also on 2/13 when I got the ddd I first checked the irs2go app on my phone & it showed but when I checked wmr right after it showed still processing and didn’t change until later in the day but the app and hotline said the ddd.

Well I don’t know if this is much help or not but I will share my story. I filed on 1/29/13 and got an email saying I was accepted on 1/31/13. Wmr stayed on first bar and that I was still processing 21 days thing. I requested transcripts on 2/5 (trying to take out a loan but needed as much income info as possible due to self employment) & was only able to get account transcript. I claimed hoh, 1 reg w2, schedule c (no self employment deductions just the income),& 2 kids (my 9 year old & new baby).
I called 2 different times and was told everything was fine just still processing and that nobody is able to order transcripts of any kind for 2012 because they are not ready (I knew better than that because my boyfriend ordered both his 2/5 and got a ddd on 2/6 for 2/8). On Monday 2/11 I our thranscripts came in his were 2012 so the IRS is just saying the transcripts are not available but my acct transcripts said there was not a 2012 tax return filed. So I freaked and called irs again but called the number on the transcript for if there were any questions. The lady I spoke with said my return was there and the same spill about transcripts being unavailable but proceeded to tell me that my return was being delayed by 1 extra week. I asked why and she said because of the high volume of returns and that I was put into review but if they needed anything they would let me know just to keep checking and could take 4 weeks.
Just out of hopes I tried for the return transcript again and nothing but tried again later that night around 10 cst and was able to order it. Yesterday 2/13 I did get a ddd for 2/15 so I am in hopes it will be in my bank tomorrow but still trying to figure out why the last lady told me I was in review.
I just thought I would share my story in case anyone else has a similar situation maybe it could help.

@whitneyf 1242 is a “reserved” delay code. The IRS does not publicize the reason behind it. There are many possible reasons but the EIC seems to be a very common area. If you’ve claimed the EIC and there is anything questionable about the claim your refund will be delayed while the IRS investigates it.
that’s what i got from googling

Got this from IRS Return Preparer Office’s facebook :

The IRS today alerted taxpayers and the tax community it is experiencing high traffic on Where’s My Refund as more tax returns come in. The heavy volume of refund inquiries means that the IRS anticipates both “Where’s My Refund?” on IRS.gov and the refund feature on the IRS2go phone app will have limited availability during busier periods.

Due to the large number of inquiries and to avoid service disruptions, the IRS strongly urges taxpayers to only check on their refunds once a day. IRS systems are only updated once a day, usually overnight, and the same information is available whether on the internet, IRS2go smartphone app or on IRS toll-free lines. While “Where’s My Refund” is updated nightly, your account will not change that frequently.

The IRS is seeing a good start to the filing season, and tax refunds are being issued timely. Nine out of 10 taxpayers typically receive refunds in less than 21 days when they use e-file with direct deposit.

The IRS expects to see the number of tax returns — and related refund inquiries –steadily increase around the President’s Day holiday week.

Here are some tips to help taxpayers with their refund questions:

∙ Have the right tax information ready before using any of the IRS refund tools. This includes Social Security number, filing status and refund amount.
∙ You don’t need to check Where’s My Refund more than once a day as your information will not change.
∙ To avoid system delays, the best time to check on refunds is evening and weekends.
∙ There is no need to call the IRS about your refund; the telephone service has the same information that is available on Where’s My Refund.

    @ Marissa.1975

I am so sorry you are having to deal with this like the rest of us. No one deserves to lose their home. I know, I’ve been there and now my family and I are having to live with my mom after losing our home. As far as the tax advocate goes, the people I have talked to that haven gotten help from them have just explained that not having the refund is causing great financial hardship. Maybe if you said that and left out the part about your house, they might be more willing to help you. Crazy that they want proof from the people who need it most but a fair share of folks are just calling and straight out lying or exaggerating way beyond whats real.

I really hope you get the answers you need, and soon. The IRS is just playing games this year and none of it makes any kind of sense. For what its worth, I don’t think you are *really* in review. From what I have read here and on other boards, everything is just all screwed up. It doesn’t make any kind of sense that ALL these people are in review. We can’t all look like liars and theives. Same thing, I filed 1/24th, accepted on 1/27th. To make a long story short. The first IRS rep told me nothing was wrong. WMR and IRS2Go both said processing with no code. Never got a letter. The holds department told me everything was fine, the examination department told me they saw it was under review but there was nothing indicating why it was under review nor nothing indicating it would come to that department. She said it was more than likely my depedent. She said they could ask for more information or they could just notice that I have filed the same way for six years and release it from review.

@styxparadise That would explain why I cant find anything on it either. Once again the IRS should have better planned this before this huge mess up. Now they should just release all these holds since its more of faulty program than actual fraud.

Ok so after reading in the forum about reviews this is what I’m coming up with because the IRS is no help!!!
So I called the tax advocate line and I’m not afraid to say why! ( 4 months behind on mortgage )
Was told unless we recieve a letter saying our home will be foreclosed on they can’t help:’(
She did tell me that my 4464c letter hasn’t been sent out yet (they send them out in batches)
After doing some research I do believe our refund is being held be quad of the amount +9k the largest it’s ever been because my husbands work was slow this year. Which is the reason we are behind on our house but also the reason for the larger refund (different tax bracket)
I guess all I can do is just wait and see what’s going to happen! BUT Where’s My Refund (WMR) is still showing processing with 21 day message! It has never changed to under review take action or anything! It’s just strange..

I received the letter 4464c but on the WMR and the IRS hotline, its still saying that my return is processing and I should receive it within 21 days. It has never changed from that since I filed and was accepted on the 30th. So I don’t know what’s going on.

I just saw something interesting on the IRS website, for those of us tha have received a letter (4464c). I’ve looked at this 3 or 4 times trying to understand it/why/where the **** my refund is.

    http://www.irs.gov/Individuals/Understanding-Your-CP05-Notice

Anyway, down at the bottom it shows an example of the CP05 letter that some of us got. If you look closely at the example, it looks a lot different from the one that I received (and yours is prob the same as mine) For one, mine certainly doesn’t say “We are holding your refund until we are finished reviewing your tax return.” And in the notes it says yours make look different because each letter is tailored to the individual. There is nothing “tailored” about my letter. It says my, name and SSN at the top, but from there down, its the same as everyone elses.

I’m just trying to prove the thought that this very well may have been a glitch that gave us all these letters. I may be grasping at straws, but with so much horrible speculation going on I’m just going crazy over here.

@AshleyMT I agree. I have not received a letter to date. I have googled this a million times, and all I can come up with are people talking about a “glitch” with the early filers, and many people received letters, but they were basic form letters, no reference codes, nothing.

I know I have not done anything wrong…same return as the last 10 yrs at least. HOH, 2 dep, EIC, CTC, Sch C along with a small W2 from a weekend job…I made about 200.00 more this year total than last year, my refund is 140.00 more than last year.

A lot of us under “reveiew” have had the same returns the last few years. Just doesn’t make sense. My 21 days is over on the 18th. On the 19th, I hpoe to get some info.

I don’t know what to think….I want to believe this thing is going to sort itself out in the next couple weeks MAXIMUM but I know that’s pretty unrealistic. I work with a girl that said she was ‘reviewed’ last year and she said she never had to send anything in and that she got her return 3 weeks after she found out she was in review. I REALLY wish we had more people on here that have been through this and could offer advice. I am a huge googler and this has been pretty hard to research. The evidence of others having been through this is there, but the info on the outcome/timeframe is nonexistent. So frustrating!

I filed and was accepted the 30th. Same return I have filed for years. I have been stuck in processing purgatory since the 30th. I finally broke down and called last week, and was told I was being reviewed, and I would only be put behind a week, and if I didn’t hear anything, to call and make an application with the taxpayer advocate. I ordered an account transcript on the 5th. I received that Saturday. It says the processing date is the 18th, and that I have not filed a return for the tax year of 2012. So I call…I need some sort of proof of filing for my divorce, and this wasn’t going to cut it. So I call, and was told that MOST people who filed in the very beginning were re-sequenced to the 7th, and if WMR says I’m processing, then “by golly” I’m processing.

So, as per the IRS rep’s instruction, I call again, to the taxpayer advocate line. I tell them what I was told. Ms. Francis told me that NO ONE at the IRS can look up anyone’s account before the 21 days is over, and no, she can’t confirm if I was accepted the 30th or the 7th, because 21 days has not passed.

    Back to square one.

@Occulus That’s quite possible, although it’s been hinted that my new child has drawn a flag since it’s a new SSN in the system. Although that’s pretty silly since I didn’t have that issue when my first 2 kids were born. Only thing rose I did differently this year was having additional withholdings taken out.

I really believe that the reason that so many are under review is because of the new fraud software programs. If you filed early and especially if you filed early with dependents then you were automatically flagged for review instead of randomly selected. Instead of acknowledging the glitch and doing something about it the IRS is just acting like they were, in fact, legitmate flags.

    @AshleyMT

They told me that it could be a long process also. I think this is ridiculus. I bet 99% of us under review have filed the same way for years and are most certainly not tax frauds. Once again regular people get the boot trying to catch criminals.

I talked to the examination department too. You can be in review under different departments for different things and examination is just one department. Mine is being held for review in a unknown department to everyone I have talked to. The last guy I talked to said sometimes they hold them back for review and then later decide they don’t need to actually review it and release the refund. He also said they may or may not need additional information from me to confirm what I have on my tax return. He said that the people that are held for review are sent letters in batches, and sometimes it can take a while to get a letter. He saw that I already have an application in with the tax advocates for an expedited return and said that was a smart move on my part…that they can help me figure out what is going on with my return etc. etc. until the issue is resolved. Although he gave me hope about having my review be released, he also said that depending on any information they might request from me to verify that it can become a very lengthy process….as in months. I don’t know what to think. I have 3 dependents (all mine) and eic. That;s it. One w2. Looking forward to keeping in touch with everyone on here and getting some support through the process. Good luck to all of us!

    Duece,

I called the Examination department and they told me the kinda the same thing. It was NOT showing in her department, did NOT show anything that would make it come to her department. So she did not know why it was in review. However the difference was she told me that she COULD see that it was in review. She did not know why I didnt get a letter or a code. She theorized that it was because of my dependant. She told me that it could take 30 days to resovle and that they may ask for more information. On the other hand she said they might just look at the fact that I’ve filed the exact same way for the last six years and release without a letter or ever asking for more information. I think they should just release all these early filers that are under review before they start on the 8863rs.

Another update: I just called the Examination department which is the department she said the return would come to if it is being reviewed. She said my return was not in the department and she did not see anything showing it is coming to her department and she did not see anything wrong either. I told her about the letter and she said she knew returns are backed up and maybe that is why the letter was generated but as of now my return is not in their area. I am really confused now and I will just wait until the 21 day window expires.

Same here. I filed and was accepted 01/30/13. My update on WMR and the hotline has been the constant 21 days processing and hasn’t changed. This past Saturday, I received the 4464c letter with a 0 code on it. You would think if you are actually under review they would put that on the WMR site or on the IRS hotline. I don’t know though. It is my understanding that most people who got the letter was a computer glitch. I sure hope that’s the case.

Ok so I filed 1/31, accepted same day and its been in pending status ever since. 21 days….blah blah…tax topic 152, etc. I just got a letter 2 days ago (4464c) saying my return is in review, we will contact you if we need more info, wait 60 days, etc. But still when I check WMR, IRS2GO or the hotline, it says we have received your return and it is being processed.

I REALLY want to know if I’m really under review, if its just a glitch, if its just a form letter sent to everyone that has EIC or dependents or whatever. This sucks! Worst tax season EVER.

My stats are refund $8000, EIC, 2 dependents (these are new for this year) no education credits, no schedule C, no 1099

I really think this new fraud system automatically flagged everyone that filed early for a review. I’ve file the same way with the same information for 6 years. They should just realase those now that the education credits are starting to process today, that’s just going to clog up the system even more. I have this sinking feeling that those of us under review are going to have to wait till the end of the tax season before we get anything. I havn’t talked to anyone that was put under review and is now out. I called the Tax Advocate yesterday and got a case open but I havn’t talked to the agent in charge, they are suppose to call me back before Friday to take the case to the IRS for expiditied process.

Well I called the holds department and acted as if I just wanted to know the status of the return. He looked through the return and he said everything looks totally fine, no holds, no flags, etc just processing. Said they are overwhelmed with returns right now and possible could go past 21 days but I was accepted on 28th so 21st day would be 18th. I never mentioned the letter to see if the system showed anything and he said he saw nothing wrong with the return and the processing of it. I asked if the 21 days message dissapearing and the your return is processing is a good sign and he verified it was a good change in status update. SMH I don’t know what to believe or maybe the review could be over? Let’s just try to keep each other updated the best we can even though we all have different situations we do however have one thing is common in that we have been told we are in review or received a CP05 letter or in my case a 4464c letter.

I have been on the phone with the irs pretty much for the majority of the lsat 2 days. I filed on the 17th, accepted the 30th, and been in processing hell ever since. No letter or anything. I talked to multiple people, some told me I was fine, others told me there was some mysterious ‘hold’ on my refund. Finally a lady today told me I am being reviewed, she said nothing about having a letter being sent at all, and said to wait up to 60 days from today for anything to happen and that the irs is just checking out the information on my refund. (hoh, 3 dependents, same everything as last year). I spoke to an advocate today that put in an application for me to have my return expedited because of financial hardship. (I won’t go into the hairy details but there is financial hardship I assure you)…Looking for help and hope, anything to keep me going. I don’t know whether to call back tomorrow to see if there are any new developments or to just try and forget about all this for a couple weeks. (as if that’s even possible!) Please guys, ANYTHING! Thanks.

Did you know you were in review before you called the tax advocate? Some of this don’t make sense to me at all. There are thousands of divorces every year. Are they seriously going to flag anyone who gets a divorce and has dependents, when there status changes? That is such bullshit.

I have filed married jointly for the last 9 years. Same dependents as last 6 years.

They should be able to inform me if I am really under review. I should not be informing them. Other people have received messages on WMR stating a review where I just always had the 21 day message until this morning when A refund date will be provided when available.

@Matthew, I agree that they just want to get you off the phone. How else can you explain the reps telling me every time I call there is nothing wrong its still processing, blah blah WMR is correct until I tell them that a rep last week told me I was under review. Then they say, oh, ok, I see the letter was mailed out give it 45 days. What, they couldn’t see it before? I’m not sure if I even am under review or if the letter is just a computer generated letter from a glitch in the system. If WMR is correct like the reps claim why doesn’t WMR say I’m under review? They can’t answer that. Or tell me why I’m under review. Sorry, just venting lol

I just got off the phone with a person from the IRS (Called and put in Ext. 362). Was on hold for about 20 minutes but got a live person.

She went through everything on my return and my account.. My 2012 return isn’t in the errors department or under review. It is still processing. She stated that they are having a lot of computer problems and it could be right at the full 21 days (which She stated started on 1/30 in my case) or possibly even a slight delay of up to one week after that to get my refund.

She went through my account thoroughly.. No offsets, no issues from prior years tax filings, my 2012 return is pretty basic.

She stated that I was one of the unlucky ones who filed early, began processing on January 30th, did nothing wrong, but are just having to wait longer than many others.

The main thing I took from this call was that we are in a state of limbo, as I’ve read mentioned before. It was good to hear that I wasn’t being reviewed or had made any errors, though it is comical that I may not get my refund until after some who may be in those situations.

That’s it for now. Best of luck to all of You!

Still processing this morning with the 21 day message. That makes me wonder if those of us that still have the processing message are really “under review” or if we are just stuck in limbo somewhere since some people actually have a review message on WMR! That letter CP05 seems like a generic letter to give them more time to process since it doesn’t have an actual code on it.

this year i have the form in my return, but its not filled out, only the bottom which is the addiotional tax credits..

here’s a thought..last year i had a seperate form for additional child tax credits..this year its one for and the questions for the top portion are not being answered..

Bingo either way necause my return dosn’t look right, soo now i’m a little excited to have a reason,:), here’s to hoping

Has anyone had any luck with a tax advocate? I tried calling them today, the woman answered and I told her my story and she said she’d transfer me to someone who could help me but then transferred me right back to the IRS customer service number!

Thank you soo much for this post. I checked mine and sure enough they were all blank so I assume that is the problem. But one thing I couldn’t figure out (could be it didn’t really say or I missed it due to having a 7 month old with pneumonia and rsv so I am very tired) but what happens now or do you know? Will they fix it or reject and I submit again? But thanks again!!

Ok I think I found the problem, read this i copied it, look at your child tax credit form 8812, In part one you have 4 boxes a b c and d. There should be a x on yes or no on all 4, if yours are blank thats the problem,
Subject: Schedule 8812, Child Tax Credit Attached to Form 1040 or Form 1040A ________________________________________ We have observed instances in which the Schedule 8812 is attached to form 1040 and 1040A and is not filled out correctly. These instances are causing downstream processing delays. We have experienced the following two conditions: (1) The Schedule 8812 Part 1 checkboxes A, B, C, and D are checked when taxpayers list a dependent child with an SSN qualifying for child tax credit and (2) The Schedule 8812 Part 1 checkboxes A, B, C, and D not being checked when taxpayers have a child with an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) on Form 1040 and 1040A line 6c identified as qualifying for the child tax credit in column 4. The Schedule 8812 instructions direct the taxpayer to: “Use Part I of Schedule 8812 to document that any child for whom you entered an ITIN on Form 1040, line 6c; Form 1040A, line 6c; or Form 1040NR, line 7c; and for whom you also checked the box in column 4 of that line, is a resident of the United States because the child meets the substantial presence test and is not otherwise treated as a nonresident alien.” We are working to implement Business Rules to reject these incorrectly completed returns with a date to be determined. In the interim, we request that software packages include an alert to help preparers identify inconsistencies when completing the Schedule 8812 and that communication be provided to the practitioner community to avoid delays in processing returns. @fnr0420 …that’s all good news, but seems like it will only affect those with WMR status of “still processing” without any update. The main issue here is the vast number of filers with a status of “Under Review” with no discernable reasons, or even confirmation of an actual review. Are we affected by any crash or glitch? Were we resequenced? What’s really going on with our returns? That’s what we want to know.

I found this on H&R block **************Ok this is my thought on the matter. Mine was sent to errors as well. I filed on 1/30 when the huge infux of people caused the system to crash.. they are doing a rebuild tonight on the MEF (Modernized E File) system. There were multiple errors caused because they had originally planned to have 2 schemas going to support 2 versions, however, they decided at the last minute to only use 1 schema. I don’t think a lot of the companies were prepared for that, and the software was not tested enough so anything that was sent before the 31st was automatically sent to errors because of the schema issue. They issued a tax alert Friday saying they have fixed the schema issue and it will go into effect on 2/11 (which is today).. I can bet you that there are going to be a lot of people getting Deposit Dates because they’ve found the fix.

Ok so guess this may be a good place to try and figure out what’s going on with my personal return.
I filed on 01/29 and accepted on 01/31 shows still processing should receive refund in 21 days with topic 152 (the one about direct deposit). I filed hoh 1 regular w-2, a schedule c self employment but no deductions or anything for the self employment and it was only for like 7500 I made from side work, and 2 dependents my 9 year old son and baby that was born this past June.
I called last week and was just told everything looked fine by two different reps at IRS but I called this afternoon and the rep (who was very nice) said that do to high volume of returns I was delayed by a week and that I had been flagged for review so instead of 3 weeks it would take 4 from when I filed. I asked about a notice Nd she said that they would contact me if they needed anything from me. She also said that as soon as info was available it would update to keep checking either the wmr site or hotline. I saw someone else post about having a new baby and being flagged for review as well. Does anyone know if maybe that maybe the issue is just the new dependent? She didn’t say just said review and delayed by 1 week.
Also I was able to order account transcripts but not return (I need them for a loan I have been trying to get and getting the runaround about because of the self employment).

@kay…yeah, some good news, but still frustrating. Over the last 6 years, I’ve had to deal with this 3 times now, and usually didn’t get my return until June. If it’s not EIC eligibility, it’s Federal Ed Fund payments ($9.00 delayed a return for 3 months), or “we need time to double check the additional withholdings that we took from you to make sure that we don’t give you a cent extra back, ” or education credits, or Identity Theft “precautions.” What a ****ing mess.

Meanwhile, someone I know, that actually committed EIC fraud by claiming his friend’s 2 kids got his return in 9 days. Go figure.

UPDATE: I contacted the Holds department this morning, and I was told that my refund is not on hold, but is in fact under review. Transferred again. They told me that part of my return has now been dated for DD on 2/13, but the rest would come “at a later date.” They said I would receive a letter, but no letter had yet been generated, so there is no code yet.

The nice lady on the phone was pretty helpful and said that a dependent had been “flagged.” Most likely since it was a child born last year, it affects the EIC status, and their system will not even attempt to automatically verify a relationship (my kid is less than 6 months old). Therefore I MAY receive a request for information, which would be birth certs, SSCs, etc. etc….but the bad news? She said that most likely it won’t get looked at for 45-60 days due to the volume. She didn’t say whether or not they were going to do this, but that it’s “up to the reviewer that it’s assigned to, and totally their discretion if they want to pull it or not.”

So essentially, they’re holding the EIC portion of the return, but she did say that my refund from the additional withholdings, would be released. Funny how the state of CA asks no questions about my kid, but the IRS “automatically” flags it. So frustrating.

Called the 800-829-0922 number. The guy didn’t even want to look at my file, said if WMR says processing then that’s what it’s doing. I told him I know I have a hold, can you tell my why? So he looked it up, said a letter CP05 was mailed. That’s all he would say.
So I called the tax advocate line, told the lady that WMR says processing, some reps say I’m being reviewed, some say I’m not, hold dept says I’m not being held. Asked if she could help me so she says hold on I’ll get someone. I was on hold for 15 min and then a regular IRS rep come on the phone! She transferred me back to them!!
That rep said the CP05 letter was mailed on the 7th, I have to wait 45 BUSINESS days from the 7th to possibly have my refund released. If they need more info they will mail out another letter, and then the 45 days starts all over again from that date!
I am so annoyed, why can’t they just review it and give me my money? WTF

Just giving our info. My boyfriend saw the same “under review” status. Finally called the hold dept today (the # given here) and they said it was being reviewed by the exam unit. They gave a # that was disconnected to call them. Called back and was transferred to the exam unit. They told him that he would receive a letter explaining what paperwork he would need to submit within 30 days. He asked her what he was flagged for and they said for the EIC. He will receive the fed income tax paid in in a few days and the rest will be released once paperwork is in. From my “google research” he’ll just need to send in copies of social security cards and birth certificates etc for the kids. Just thought we’d share our info.

Here is my story. I e-filed on the 25th was accepted in a test batch on the 27th. I remained in processing land from the 30th and remain there today. On Friday I received the 4464C letter. I filed HOH, 2 dependents both previously claimed. I was amazed when I found this page and saw that so many people have the same issue. I have been on Google since Friday researching and this has happened every tax year since 2010 from what I can find. What happens according to previous years posts is once you run through for the test the second run once the IRS opens flags your forms as a duplicate which generates the letter and throws you into the review pile. When you call the reps they usually are no help because your letter shows 0 as your error code. Which is a computer generated error. I’m not sure if that is the case this year just sharing what I have found from previous years.

I was told last week by H&R Block that most people don’t know they’ve been reviewed; that usually the irs rep tells them they are still processing. If a letter is sent, thrn it is either a math error, w2 amounts don’t match, or a dependent has either a wrong SS#, or is new, or was claimed by someone else last year. If a human has to look at it, a letter is sent….if the computer reviews it, your stuck in processing limbo until the next cycle.

This lady just said we would get a letter dated 2/25, and I asked why it took so long for a letter to go out, she said she didn’t know. I am going to call back later or tomorrow see if I can get someone more helpful.
The way she made it sound was they won’t even “review” it until after the date of the letter and that was why to allow an additional 60 days after the letter.

She said the return started processing on the 28th and she said that some returns may have been picked out by computer in the test batches for review. @kay kay i know hahaha…hope we get it soon!

@yvette63 that is what we are assuming because we’ve seen ppl who are actually under review have a code on wmr and hotline. with ours, it is just processing and we haven’t gotten an error code or some kind of irs ref code on both the wmr & hotline. we’ll see…i’m gonna call tomorrow to hold dept and see if i get the same answer.

Okay, I filed on 1/30 and was accepted on the same day. On both WMR and the IRS hotline I have been getting the same generic 21 day message. Saturday, I got the dreaded 4464c letter in the mail. It has a 0 code on it. However, when I check WMR and the hotline, I’m still getting the same 21 day processing message. Is there a chance that this letter was just a glitch?

I found some good reading: http://www.irs.gov/irm/part21/irm_21-004-001r.html from what I can gather, those who are “still processing” have been resequenced. These are the codes that appear on tbe IRS rep’s screen when they open our returns.

So I’ver called IRS, told me that it looks like potential fraud is holding my return..she wasn’t sure..have yet to get a letter..accepted 26th, order trans 2nd..

I am thinking when i do get this letter is it going to be the identity affidavid..if so could I fill that out now..

Anyone ever get a hold for this reason..

i filed a claim on 2009, stating my taxes were done w/o my knowledge…one visit, i never followed up because it was my ex girlfriend (daughters mother), i just wanted to let go..’
lady on the phone knew this whole story and she really thinks with all the little notes on my account that this 2009 fraud stuff is comming up…
Wierd ecause the last 3 years went through nno problem, and this year is the excate same everything-(except i made a few more $)

Just to confirm if there is a code on your letter 4463C would it appear after the C? I just wan to have my facts straight when I call the holds department in the morning. I hope so as two reps told me I should still receive refund within 21 days and this error code is nothing to worry about. When I asked what the error code was the one rep said it was an “internal” code. I did confirm I was re sequenced also.

For the first few times I called I acted like I knew nothing about the letter and asked if the following:

Are there any debt indicators on my account: No
Are there any flags on my account : No
Are there any holds on my account : No
Has my return be re sequenced : after putting me on hold … Yes
Do you have a DDD for me: Not showing one but it should be within 21 days
Why did I receive a letter 4464C: Put me on hold to go and find the letter…aked me what the letter said again trying to confirm things and then told me this code is nothing to be alarmed about. As he searched for a reason he asked me how much was refund and told him over 8k and he stated “ah ok that is why you may have received the letter”

    1. File 1/20, accepted as part of test batch 1/25 IRS rep says really accepted 1/28 (as of Friday Return not processed yet per rep)
    2. No Education Credits
    3. I can only order account transcript which I received and it is blank
    4. Just says processing on App and WRM and 21 should receive refund
    5. Received 4464C dated 2/1/13
    6. Return over 8k
    7. EIC, W-2, 2 dep
    8. Same job last 10 years, same dependents as last year, address, similar refund amount to last year

And have you received your letter before they deposited it? I just got that message yesterday and was wondering about how long before I can at least see some kind of deposit.

okay who broke the hotline… and WMR… jk jk… @squidney2k1 sometimes a new bundle of joy can flag the system… especially a new SS number… if you called and they said there wasn’t a problem I wouldn’t worry as much… if you don’t get your return or get a letter with a code… then start worrying… i posted the info on the codes a few pages up so you can look….i also think that all of this transcript checking is causing lots of problems… any one with a computer knows that they some time do what they want and if you keep forcing it to do something it gets mad at you and starts thinking with that stupid hour glass…so after 15 minutes you have to shut it down and start all over…. now imaging that times 9 million…but i also could be wrong….I am no tax expert by any means but after all of this drama i know could very well know more than those mean people telling us just to wait…. I am more so trying to reassure myself more than anybody else but if I can ease other people tension at the same time why not… lol

    1. e-Filed 1/25 through H&R Block. Accepted 1/30
    2. No ed form
    3. Ordered a 2012 return transcript 2/7 (WMR at the time still said processing; the bar was long gone)
    4. No letter received
    5. WMR says “under review/take action” that I should get a letter. Rep said my return does not show to be under review through them
    6. Return $8,700, up from $5,600 last year
    7. Two W-2 forms, HOH, EIC, 3 dependents, but this year I had additional withholdings (1 reason for the higher return this year) and a new baby for a dependent

I have no codes under WMR or the hotline they both say processing as usual… Now the code you that are getting are from the hotline or are you talking about that Tax topic at the very bottom of the WMR screen if so that is just reading material about the refund… I will check the codes for those that have that under the hotline cause i have no clue what they mean…I also see a pattern with the people who filed and early and those to filed on the first two days of tax season… my personal opinion as of today is the letter was a glitch…now The hotline people may really be under review…. but dont flip out cause from what I am reading it can be anything from a math error to like the earlier post someone else claimed a child then a new person claimed the same child… that’s why the codes…. They have been reviewing returns for that reason cause it is very common people sell there kids “not literally” of course but they let someone claim there kids and spit the refund…. and its more common then you would think…EIC gives like 5000 for two kids so that’s one reason why the review… I know that’s not the problem for me cause I have claimed my brat for more than 5 years… I know we are stressing out… i will post back with more info soon

I called today and actually got a nice rep on the first try. She checked my info and told me the small deposit I received was just my federal withholding. (Which I already figured). She then told me I technically wasn’t under review but my return was pulled because I filed my niece and she was filed by someone else last year. She said my return was in a pile and it’s a possibility it will be examined by a IRS agent within 90 days!! She said its also a possibility that they would kick it out and send out my refund but for right now my return is in some kind of retarded IRS limbo state. Long story short: I’m pretty much fucked until they decide they’re done with me

The only think I did different this year was claim my daughter, she is 3, her mother claimed her for the past 2 years, so that gave me the hoh ctc and made me qualify for the eic this yr. I spoke to 4 reps yesterday. 2 said my refund had a hold and was under review, the 3rd said something about a problem with last years return which i was transfered and found out that was not the problem. Called the 4th time and they looked it up took 30 minutes kept coming back on the line to let me know he was still checking on it. He didnt say anything about a hold or review. Said Im still in the begining of processing and he doesnt see how they could have put it on hold or review so early on in processing. I have not had a status bar since I filed. All wmr and the hotline says is that im processing and a direct date will be provided when available. Oh by the way one of the first 2 reps said they were going to mail out a cp05 next week but none of the other 3 reps said anything about that.

okay guys lets find out what we all have in common…

    1. yes I am a early filer filed on the 7th accepted the 23 per TA but I think i got sent back through around the 30-31
    2. Have Ed form 8863
    3. ordered account transcript ONLY 2/2
    4. no code for letter at all
    5. Letter sent 2/01
    6. Return over 7k
    7. EIC, CTC,P&L(profit n loss) self employment
    8. New address… but pulled transcript under old

BTW… just checked the mail no account transcript 7 days later…

Trying to find a method to this madness… if I am over stepping…. please say so and I will tone it down…

@impatiently & fnr That’s what the rep told me that returns that were accepted early were tested went through the full process and at the point of refund the letter was generated because IRS was not accepting returns only testing the system. So now the returns are being accepted and our returns have been re sequenced and are really processing now. Explains why most letters have a 0 and not an actual code and most WMR’s say 21 day processing

That cp05 I’m not sure what it is I have a letter like Kay where there is no additional code just a zero so from what I was told I was being re sequenced after being apart of a test batch, @swiggins your wmr is totally different from mines as I’ve always and still have the 21 day message. See what it says Monday and if not try to call the holds department see what they say.

@fnr when I spoke to regular reps they never mentioned being reviewed the first time I said I was afraid of i.d theft and then the rep opened my full account put me on hold and came back with the review. When I called other reps they too said they didn’t see anything so I always mentioned that I received a letter [at that point I really hadn’t] and it was the same thing they put me on hold came back and said “I just need to do what the letter says and wait” 1 rep said it was for my protection that they hold the funds…I never got a straight forward answer until speaking to the rep from the holds department.

WMR still gives 21 day processing message
    Can’t order return transcripts
    Filed 01/17
    Accepted 01/24
No education credits just EIC, W2’S, claimed my 2 children, husband still in military I happened to work 2 different jobs and my kids went to a new daycare this year

I can’t find anything for 0 at all… now it might be different for those who got there info from WMR but… I think this letter for now is a glitch… Plus from reading about the forms it is 100% computer generated… I’m doing some more research so I will let you guys know what else I find out…. trying to be as helpful as I can… :)

@kay I was loosing my mind up until I hung up the phone with Ms. Garcia, I have been researching like crazy, becoming OCD with WMR and trying to order transcripts I was even reading stuff from 2009

@taxpayer if you have a hold on your return that is not related to any of the current tax delays like 8863 then I would certainly call the hold line and see what they say it’s a lot better than worrying I know it made me feel so much better

Here is our story so far:
Filed on the 1/16 (HRB) IRS accepted it 1/30 was able to order both transcripts on 2/4. Still said processing on 2/5 so we called. They told us everything looked fine and that it was still processing give it until 2/20 and call back. Called again yesterday to see what was going on and if we could get a DDD. They lady told us it was under review. We didn’t do anything wrong, NO letter had been sent out. No codes were given. She also couldn’t give us an average time it takes to review.
My question is: If we aren’t getting a letter, or error codes then what is going on?

I highly advise everyone to call that number. I spoke with a Ms. Garcia who was a sweetheart and she was very helpful. She stated that the IRS has a new system this year and for that system they accepted a few returns as a test. [I was accepted on the 24th] Those returns accepted as a test were just that a test, by no means was that your actual acceptance date since they did not begin processing until the 30th. So the test subjects returns fully went through the system and were assigned a number and then when they opened the flood gates on the 30th they were sent back through for what they call re-sequencing. That triggered the 4464c letter. She looked over my return line by line and told me there were no red flags and that it was actually being processed she even verified my banking information to make sure there would be no hold ups when the time comes around. I thanked her so much because I have gotten nothing but jerks on the line unwilling to assist. She also stated that if you were really up for review your WMR would update to say that along with an error code. If you were accepted early I would assume maybe you are in the same category as me but it always feels better to hear that for yourself so call call call and goodluck everyone. I will keep you all posted and I ask that you do the same. Have a great weekend!

We have received your tax return and it is being processed.
You should get your refund within 21 days from the date we received your tax return.

Please check here or use our free mobile app, IRS2Go, to check on your refund status.

I also still have not received my account transcript as of today…. one week later… maybe it will come Monday or maybe just maybe (praying) that’s what the letter about… it had no code to reference to at all…. I decided not to call until this whole delay of the 8836 form has been settled…Also after I got the letter I went flipping google search crazy and A LOT of people using TT are getting the letter and the codes on WMR… I’m just praying for good news for ALL of us…

The lady I talked to today says the updates in the processing system caused some returns to be kicked to review for no reason at all. When she looked at my account, she went line-by-line and say no codes or flags. After having me on hold for about ten minutes, she came back on the line, said she removed the hold on my refund, and placed my account back into the normal refund delivery system. She said I should be able to see my direct deposit date in a couple days.

If you have been told by an IRS agent that you are under review, or that your refund is on hold, ask to be connected to the “holds department”. They can tell you more than the regular reps, and they have the power to make changes on your account.

Okay here’s my two cents not that it really means anything on the 1st of Feb I ordered a account transcript for 2012 could not order the return transcript cause I have the education credit which as we all found out does not process until Feb 14 so How can I get a transcript on a year that hasn’t happen yet… for me anyways… what I am thinking is I received the letter because of the delay of the 8863… there is no code on the letter or the hotline or WMR….I am still and have been since the 23rd processing… I AM NOT calling cause all they do is give me the run around… My patiences is way to then right now for that… now I could be totally wrong about this theory but… I wont know for sure till next week…. Ok, here’s my story:
Used Turbotax. Filed 1/24, accepted 1/26. 1 W-2, EIC with 3 kids, same as last 3 years.
WMR and hot line have been processing ever since. No codes or review messages.
I called yesterday and the rep wasn’t helpful, said they didn’t get my return on 1/26, that they got it 1/31. Said everything looked ok, just give it 3 weeks (21 days).
Called again this morning since I still didn’t get an update on WMR, rep looked and said I had a hold on my return but she didn’t know why. She didn’t see any codes or anything and said they haven’t mailed out a letter. If they need anything they will mail one out but just figure 45 days before its released!
So I called this afternoon to see if another rep seen something different. Nope, it’s under review, she doesn’t know why. I may get a letter, maybe, if they need info. I asked her why WMR doesn’t say I’m under review and she said its not accurate.
I am soooo annoyed with this whole thing!

hackney2009: 1st objective is to try to get them to open your file and look at it. Ask them that you just wanted to check to see if you have any errors or any debt indicators/offsets, flags, or under manual review on your file. They have to look at your return to find that information out. Once they have your file open then you can ask what you really want to know. If your refund was reduced then at that point ask them about the reduction and if they can tell you why the reduction.

Sometimes it takes multiple calls to get someone that is willing to help as many of them are trained to be rude and not open your file.

2013taxpayer : my refund was higher.. it was funny though I called yesterday when I received the letter monday evening and they could not find anything wrong with my return. I just played dumb and asked questions. Then when I told them about the letter they put me on hold and finally found the code.

When I was with my CPA today on the conference call today on the line he called they answered the call in less than 2 minutes… asked for his ID information and mine and looked at everything we asked them to. The person we spoke with said the code is nothing to be alarmed and basically just holds the funds in case someone wants to look at the return. He was searching for a reason why the return would of been held and then he asked how much it was for and when I told him over $7000 he then said that was the reason due to the high dollar amount. Said I should still receive it within the 21 day time frame like WMR is stating from the 28th which for me would be 2/18.

hackney2009 – Not sure but you would receive a letter stating you are being Audited if that was the case.

Remember that if anyone is experiencing a financial hardship due to the delay of their refund they can call the Tax Advocate group which is a free service to represent you and expedite or if not expedite at least research your situation more as they will act as your liason with the IRS during the process of the review.

The number is listed on the letter 4464c 1-877-777-4778

I have been under review since the 1st also but I am only able to order a account transcript and not the return transcript. I still get the processing and refund expected in 21 days. No error codes or anything and when I call I had to actually tell them I received the letter as the IRS agents told me everything looked fine with the return. The agent yesterday actually had to go look up the letter 4464c before he gave me the 6 to 8 week spill. Another agent told me he is supposed to say 6 to 8 weeks but it usually is alot faster than that time frame.

I’ve been under review since the 1st but I was able to order my transcripts and I received a deposit from HRB for 200 bucks

Yesterday, which is wayyy less than what my return is supposed to be, but now when I check their systems they don’t have any

info about my return at all. It’s like I never even filed with

Them. I’m still waiting for my letter but I really can’t imagine what would be wrong since I didn’t prepare them myself. I also can’t

Find anyone in the same situation as me so it’s an even shittier situation

i filed & got accepted on 1/28th. since 1/30th as of now, i am showing as returned received & processing on wmr & the same on refund hotline. i have just received a 4464 c letter yesterday. i was told on here to not to worry if i got the letter and on wmr still shows as processing and not a specific error/irs ref code on the wmr. also was told along with my sis (the original owner of this username) earlier today on here to not to worry about it because they got their refund the same day they got their under review letter. she called irs about it and they told her that they have been getting quite a few calls about it but need not to worry because it was a glitch in the system that has been sending out letters. hopefully, that is the case.

i also can’t order my return transcript but i can order my acct transcript.

    Hi Guys!
    Filed 01/17
    Accepted 01/24
WMR gives the generic 21 day message

BUT after reading the different forums and having friends that filed after me already get their taxes I decided to call. Took me 3 reps til I found out we were placed under review they didn’t state why other than it was for my protection. Like other people I claimed the Childcare Tax Credit and this is the only year that our return is different. My husband is still in the military but I worked 2 jobs and we moved so my kids went to 2 daycares. Was expecting a large amount upward of 15k. No offsets reported for either one of us and the rep I spoke to said they were mailing a letter but I don’t need to do anything and it can take up to 60 days…bleh! This has never ever happened and I’m a little nervous, scared and concerned. I will keep everyone posted.

I going to assume this email I got this morning from TurboTax is from the funds I received yesterday. It says funds are on their way and I should have them by the next bussinss day. I’m not holding my breathe but the rest of my refund would be appreciative.

Filed with HRB and accepted on 1/30. Expecting a return of 4 grand

Went into review a couple days later and was able to order transcripts yesterday.

Before today HRB website could’nt find my return but now their website is saying i never even filed with them!

WMR hotline still says I am under review.

HRB hotline says my funds have been sent to my bank.

Checked my bank account and it shows a deposit of 200 bucks from HRB..

Idk what boat im in but its looking like the titanic.. A lot of big ass holes

i filed 1/27 with taxact. was done processing on 1/31 and ordered the transcript. 2/4 wmr still showed 21 day processing message.

called irs on 1/4. he said my refund is on hold til 1/18 but cant see why. he said that it isnt for debt. he said no letter has been sent out. he said if everything is ok by 2/18 my refund will deposit.

called irs back on 2/6. lady says i an still on refund hold, give it til 1/18. she says no letter has been sent as of this date either.

    wmr still shows return processing.

i assume its not an eic review because i havent got any refund of the taxes paid in, and irs says my entire refund is on hold.

did anyone here see any other message besides “your return is being processed. you should get your refund within 21 days”?

well I guess the review is for EIC and child tax credit at least for me, just noticed a deposit on my greendot card for only my federal taxes no EIC or CTC. load of BS, exact same filing as last year, I am the court ordered legal guardian of my nephew with a different last name. Filed with him last year with no issues F@@K all of those who file fraudulently with other peoples kids, you caused this BS with the IRS looking at legit filers and holding up my $$$$

I’ve gotten a LTR 4464C letter that says my return is under review, and it might take up to 60 days to process. It said they may require additional information, but I don’t need to do anything yet. I used TT and filed on the 10th so my return was accepted quickly. The only problem is my return is delayed because of the Education Tax Credit delay until Feb 15th… From what I’ve read my return shouldn’t of been processed yet, and why I don’t understand why I even got a letter.

Ok here is my situation. Got accepted on the 29, on the 1st got the dreadful msg Take action and I should receive a letter in the mail. On Sunday I had a deposit in my net spend card minus the EIC. So i called yesterday and talked to a very helpful rep. He said I should receive a letter in the mail stating that I have to prove that I have a right to claim for Eic. He didnt say when I will get the letter or how long it will take. Checked the mail and no letter yet. Really hoping it comes soon!

I am getting all kinds of conflicting messages and dates from different and websites. WMR gives me this under review message, Irs2go says sent/deposited with no date or reference number, hotline gives me the WMR message, TurboTax says accepted, TurboTax mobile says it has been successfully acknowledged and you will receive your refund before 2/17 and mytaxrefund app says something else different. What a nightmare!

i filed on 1/28 accepted 1/29 processing for 4 days then went to review. Called IRS today and after talking the rep into looking up my return she said still processing. Not sure if this is accurate or not. I do have a schedule C, Filed HOH, and claim my nephew same as I did last year because I am his legal guardian with a court order. i have filed with a schedule C and W2 for the last 8 years never an issue.

Personally I have seen so many people comment on this review process I have no idea who is right, some say the review is generated by computer and may only cause a delay of a couple of days. Others say it can hold your refund for weeks or months.

    Who knows????

Well I tried calling this morning and had absolutely no luck in finding out why I am under review. She just told me it’s too early to find out anything about my return. She wouldn’t even look up my info. Just told me to wait 3 weeks to see if my status updates. What the heck is the call center there for then if they can’t answer questions that are actually deemed important other than people calling trying to get a friggin’ DD date after filing hours ago! SMH. Hopefully something comes in the mail today. I don’t want this getting dragged out too long.
