Early February 1121 Information

A very small percentage of taxpayers may see an 1121 reference number if they check “Where’s My Refund?” after they initially were provided a projected refund date by the tool. The IRS is aware of this situation, and emphasizes that the small group of taxpayers who see this reference number should continue checking Where’s My Refund for an update. If we need more information to process their return, we will contact them — usually by mail.

The IRS began processing returns on Jan. 31, and we’ve already issued millions of refunds. The IRS works hard to issue refunds as quickly as possible, but as part of our effort to prevent improper payments some tax returns take longer to process than others for many reasons, such as when a return includes errors, is incomplete, or needs further review. We apologize for any confusion or inconvenience.

Q: What should taxpayers do if they receive an 1121 reference number when they check Where’s My Refund?

A: The best advice for all taxpayers is to continue checking Where’s My Refund for a refund date. If we need more information to process their return, we will contact them — usually by mail. The web and phone tools are updated just once a day so there is no need to check more often. Our phone and walk-in representatives can only research the status of a refund if it’s been 21 days or more since the return was filed electronically, more than 6 weeks since a paper return was mailed, or if Where’s My Refund? directs a taxpayer to contact us as in the case of those who see the 1121 reference number.

Q: I read in social media that a reference number 1121 means I’m being audited. Is that true?

A: No, this code is simply a reference number that our telephone representatives use to help them research your account. It does not mean the taxpayer is being audited. If the IRS needs more information to process the return, we will contact the taxpayer — usually by mail.

@Anonymous: I had the IRS reference code 1121 after I had already received a direct deposit date. Needless to say it never came. I called the IRS a few times in a 2 week period saying nothing is wrong. I then received a letter stating that I needed to verify my identity, which I could visit idverify.irs.gov website to do so. I did this on 03/09/2016, it said congratulations on verifying your identity PLEASE ALLOW UP TO 6 WEEKS TO PROCESS YOUR RETURN.I then checked where is my refund and still no change still says take action. well today 03/31/2016 I called the IRS to ensure it was being processed, seeing no change on IRS where is my refund. Well the representative told me there is no record that I verified online on 03/09/2016. I had to verify with her over the phone. Now I have to ALLOW UP TO 9 WEEKS FROM TODAY. for my refund to process. Word to the Wise: If you verified online at idverify.irs.gov and see no change on the status Call the IRS to confirm it was actually verified and your account shows that. Otherwise it will just sit there not being processed.

I filed 2/9, I got ddd for 2/24, on 2/24 when I went to WMR it didn’t say the refund was sent, so I call to figure out why it wasn’t sent if it was scheduled for that day. They gave me a number and told me I had to I’d verify. ID verify was completed and was told it could take 9 weeks from verifying ID, which was on the 24th, a few days later when I checked WMR , it had the “take action” message and call, with reference code 1121. Called again and was told everything was fine , it was to verify ID but i already had done it and my return was being processed again. They said I should receive within 9 weeks, To this day WMR still has that message 1121 code, on Monday i received a letter from irs again saying to verify, so I call again and ask why they sent letter to verify if I had already done it. They said it musta got sent out late but everything was fine and I just had to wait the time frame. Still waiting after verifying 2/24.
