Does anyone know how long it takes to receive your refund if you are going through the identity theft process? The IRS is telling me up to 180 days but has anyone gone through this that didn’t have to wait 180 days? A family member filed my fiancés information for a previous tax year and we are trying to fight it.

I was a victim of ID theft for the 2014 tax year. It was a nightmare. I e filed early February and had my paper mail stamped by my local IRS office a week later. 4 weeks later I contacted them to follow up on the status. Turned out there was a delay because my local office sent it to VA, and then it had to be sent to CA, because that location dealt with my state. By May, nothing had been updated. With no notice, I saw my deposit come through to my bank the last week in July. I was notified I would need an pin to file for 2015 and I would receive a letter in December. After not receiving any such letter, I contacted the IRS in January and they verified that The “id pin” I was supposed to receive for the 2015 tax year was sent to the address on the fraudulent return.

I am a victim of identity theft this year and was absolutely devastated when my electronic return was rejected. I mailed in my return with the Identity Theft form with anything I could possibly find to verify my identity on 2/6/3015. I got a letter about 30 days later from the IRS asking me to fax a copy of my W2 to them. Finally after calling every 2-3 days, they put my return in on 4/9/2015, BUT that didn’t mean it was being worked on according to the rep. I called again this past week and they said it was being worked on, it would take a couple of weeks. WHATEVER! I think they say things like that to get “us” to stop calling. I called again yesterday and was told my return was complete, they added a $55 interest, isn’t much but every penny counts, and that I cannot get direct deposit since this is an identity theft case and my check would be mailed out on Monday 7/6. I’ll be calling again on Tuesday. I always call the identity theft line, I always get thru, sometimes I wait for 15 min other times maybe 45 min. 800-908-4490. I’ll write an update after my call on Tuesday.

Called on 4/13/15 to inquire about refund. They said my 2013 return was flagged for identity theft so my 2014 return needed to be reviewed. They said it would take 6-8 weeks to be reviewed and another 6-8 weeks to receive the refund. They gave me a call back date of 7/17/15. While on the phone I answered some questions to verify my identity.

I called again on 4/20/15 because I tried to look at my past transcripts and it said to contact IPSU. They said they were finished reviewing my return and it was submitted for processing.

On 4/22/15 WMR went from “Your tax return is still being processed. A refund date will be provided” to “We have received your tax return and it is being processed.”

                4/25/15 WMR showed a DD of 4/29/15 :)
