Where’s My Refund?

Where’s My Refund?

When does IRS accept tax returns in 2017?

The IRS will begin accepting and processing tax returns beginning on January 23, 2017.

When Can You File Taxes in 2017?

Most tax preparers will allow you to enter and submit your tax return beginning the first week of January 2017.  You don’t need to wait for the IRS to start accepting tax returns to start, but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January and some even later.  When you submit your return before the IRS begins processing, it will sit in a “queue” and be held until the date that the IRS will officially accept tax returns.  If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early in a test batch. This has resulted in early direct deposits in the past, but also major glitches because they are tests after all.

Where is the IRS Refund Cycle Chart?

2017 Refund Cycle Chart

The most recent tax refund cycle charts have already been published. The official IRS tax refund cycle chart has been eliminated and replaced with an IRS Information Guidelines for the Tax Preparation Community publication. However, various websites with refund calendars for the 2017 tax season (2016 tax year) have been updated with 2017 direct deposit and check mailing dates.

When to Expect My Refund?

IRS Refund Schedule Charts typically show that early filers whose returns are accepted before the end of January can anticipate a tax refund direct deposit as early as the first week of February.  The day that IRS deposits refunds varies but we notice trends that help you determine the time and days WMR updates and when your tax return is processed.

So my friend filed his taxes in February has received 2 letters sent the requested information to the IRS IT’S in April and May the last letter said he would have a response by August 11th 2017 it’s now the 21st and know letters know money. How long can it sit in tax topic 151 and processing or at least on where’s my refund I’ve called several times know one has been any help they say the wait is due to high response..I say this is BS .

ok. So I just received a letter from the irs. It says they adjusted my refund, IF I’m expecting a refund, I’ll receive it within 4-6 weeks. Funny thing is the only new code on my transcript is 290. Which is additional tax assessed in the amount of $0.00. Shouldn’t there have been a code for notice issued? How do I know if they approved the refund? And if so, how long does it take to receive my refund after it’s been adjusted?

@Flipflop: No. My daughter filed her first return, specifying she was a dependent & someone else could claim her…which if they ever, ever, ever take the time to even look at the return they will see this. There still is no excuse, none whatsoever for people to still be waiting for returns. As I said- if they were gonna implement all these new regulations they should have had the staff to deal with it in a timely manner. And you would think if it is because of her filing a return – it would cross reference. In this day & age of computers there just is no excuse for these delays. I called the state and the woman pulled my return and literally did it in 5 minutes while on the phone with me(this after waiting 15 weeks before I called) I am hoping for everyone still waiting that this eclipse brings in some new, positive energy and lights a fire under the IRS’s butt.

@StuckinStowewithnodough: thanks for the reply. I know what 290 stands for. It says it right on my transcript beside the code. What I want to know is, does it usually come before they release my refund? Is it a good thing? Does it mean they’re finally starting on my amended return?

@flipflop: I was audited 2 years ago, yes -their father claimed them fraudulently- when I have called the IRS-both of the clerks looked through my records, and said this should not be happening again- and put notes to that effect.Yes, I called Congress and there really is nothing they can do. My letter from the IRS from 2 years ago is on the top of the pile of the 37 pages of information I sent so they have no more excuses for delays once they actually look at my file. And both clerks admitted that the amount of fraud being caught is miniscule because not everyone is being audited, looked over, whatever you would like to call it- but many, many citizens are getting rightfully upset & irritated. There is no excuse whatsoever for what has happened this year with refunds, none. As I have said if they were going to implement these reviews, audits then they should have had the manpower to do it in a timely & efficient matter. if any other business handled themselves this way they would be out of business. If this happens next year I will be hiring a lawyer.

@StuckinStowewithnodough: if I recall correctly, you’re being audited. That 45 day letter you received is computer generated. Computer spits them out when a certain time period has gone by. From what I understand, exam is working on taxpayer responses that were received in the beginning of April. March and April were big mail months. Once they get thru April mail, it should go faster. I know that doesn’t make you feel any better and it angers me that people are waiting this long. Did you contact your congressional reps office like I suggested to you before? If they’ll help, they can get your case resolved right away. Exam hates congressional inquiries! You are a taxpayer and you have rights. If you don’t mind me asking, when you were reviewed before, were you and your ex both claiming the same children?

I have been waiting since January 24, 2017…got the “review letter back in April- waited the 90 days…now got a letter they need another 45 days (mind you they haven’t even looked at my return) which begs the question…I would like to know how many more Americans are waiting for their return?? What percentage? I have lost all faith in our system- it is a joke- at this rate I may see a return by the time I’m ready to file 2017’s. I just went through a “review” 2 years ago because of my ex, sent me a letter I passed with flying colors…so this even makes me more disgruntled & upset. I’d also like to know what percentage of fraud (their reason for the delays for most everyone) they have actually uncovered compared to the number of people they have cause serious financial stress. Rant over.

Can the IRS deny it, ask for more information, request more docs or do they typically release it?

However it has not been processed. We apologize for any inconvenience. Please call blah blah blah, you will need a copy of your amended return. No codes or anything. Can anybody tell me what’s going on or has anybody else gone through this? I know they seem to be taking longer than the 16 weeks this year, but other people have at least gotten letters or codes on their transcripts, but I’ve received no letters and the only codes I had on my transcript I believe are 977 and 971, which were amended return received and return sent for processing or something like that.

She explained that it meant I was a household employee and I only made w certain amount for thr year and have to claim it as so. HSH is defined as an house hold employee making less than 1900 ….which I made more with that one person between other contract jobs throughout the year.

After getting off the line with her i did some research and found out that I Should have possibly been given a 1099misc although i am an independent contractor and could be penalized for it. Im still really confused by this and upset that I can potentially be in trouble for this.

She also explained that if the irs doesn’t accept this that I’ll have to file a 1040x but I won’t know if they accept this she said for at least 2 more weeks and that’s once she submits it on Monday.

I’m so over this. I havent filed shit different in over 10 years and have never had any issues in my 21 years of tax filing….so this is beyond me at this point.

Please help. I received a letter stating the EIC credit was dismissed and I’ve been penalized for and received a large amount to pay back. This is my first time going through this and I’ve been a victim of identity theft a while back. The tax office in which I got my taxes done ia currently under investigation. What should I do on my part I’m sure there must have been a mistake added to my return that I didn’t approve of but I have no way of knowing. I just want the amount dropped or decreased I don’t want to owe

@Flipflop: I actually got a little headway today- called the state office and the woa processed and released my return while talking to me, literally took her less than 5 minutes(which is all it will take the IRS if they actually do it). She admitted they had been concentrating on homestead & property taxes and that was why there are so many delays. I then called the IRS and the woman who helped me told me they sent me another letter needing another 45 days, yet it has not even been touched or looked at. She also saw how I had been through this 2 years ago and passed the audit with flying colors and made note of it, admitted it was a complete waste of time to be putting me through this yet again. She said if it were her she’d be calling weekly, that the amount of time a lot of people are having to wait is unexceptable. She had put in a request to expedite- but if not I am now looking at possibly until August 29 before I can even get a TA. So the people answering the phones are temporary workers & are not the ones doing the processing. She also said that now that the state approved & released it is more apt for the feds to do the same.

@Flipflop: Yes. And am writing a letter…although it won’t make a bit of difference is my difference. Bottom line is they should not have implemented al these new review systems if they did not have the man power to process everyone’s returns in a timely manner. If that is in fact the case. i have seen one to many people on here or in my life that are put at severe financial hardship because their wages are low and they count on the refund to supplement their income. Good, hard working people. It’s just not ok. It is the lower income population that for the most part benefits from the EIC. The little bit of interest will not help people if they have already lost their home, or are about to. Something seriously needs to change.

When you’re beginning to think you probably won’t see your refund until you’re filing for the next season…there is something seriously wrong with the system…not just at the federal level but the state level too…and the only way they’ll actually catch any good amount of fraud is if they audit every single person- I know a neighbor who for a fact is claiming kids fraudulently, not claiming income & they slid right through- got their refund in the timely manner of 6 weeks…while so many f us still wait with noe end in sight…

@StuckinStowewithnodough: there is a lot of fraud, mostly with EIC. Examination catches a pathetically small amount of it. They can’t audit everyone. Like I said, I hate seeing hardworking people getting screwed over. I want you to get the money you rightfully deserve. You’ve been on here a long time patiently waiting.

@Flipflop: I think that’s a great suggestion! I truly get them having to be more careful, etc-etc- but if they’re gonna implement that than they should have proper staffing numbers to handle it quickly & efficiently- I have seen one to many people, families be put in severe financial conditions over this & it is just not right. And I honestly do not believe they have stopped any fraud, or EIC that was claimed that wasn’t supposed to…or not enough to justify this mess everyone has been dealing with. Just a hunch. And I also believe a lot of it is stalling tactics for one reason or another. I do really hope they pay interest for making anyone wait so long-that at least is a step in the right direction. I do respect you keeping your sources private. I hope this coming year will go much smoother for everyone!

@flipflop: Do you happen to work for the IRS on some level, or have a friend or relative who does to know all this information? It is happening at the state level, too. I am not trying to be disrespectful in any way but it is beyond ridiculous this year. Yes, I suppose I am being audited, reviewed…I was 2 years ago because my ex also claimed the children & I received a letter from the IRS stating I was clear for the next 4 years-that letter went on top of all the other information I sent in. It just is beyond frustrating when I have family, friends who are going through the same- sent their information in after me and they have gotten their refunds from both state and federal already. So there doesn’t seem to be a system of they do them in the order they receive them. Also going through it 2 years ago mine should be very straight forward & the woman who I spoke to at the IRS said so, was surprised I got pulled again & even made notes to that fact, flagged my file. So I hope you can understand where my frustration is coming from & also the fear that I may not see any of that money until next tax season at this rate. I work very hard, am a single mom who supports both my children with no help whatsoever from their father, so this is a very big deal to me, as I know it is to many, many others.

@StuckinStowewithnodough: Oh they are absolutely short staffed and those in the examination department are doing the best they can (you’re being audited, right?). Management doesn’t care much. They’re just number crunchers and have no clue as to what the job entails. It’s incredibly frustrating to have literally hundreds of cases to work on where people have been waiting months for an answer and half of the work shift is spent taking calls from those same people asking what’s taking so long. No examiner wants to be sitting on hundreds of cases. They want to get them done and closed. The ridiculous process and the amount of time left in the day is the enemy. You can’t win. And yes, they will pay you interest.

@Jess: 1. not likely and because you’re in a community property state, except for EIC, the refund gets split 50/50. No way around it. EIC gets allocated based on each spouse’s income. 2. that timeframe sounds about right.

@Flipflop: I understand they are short staffed- it does make me very leary that if they have no money in their budget to hire more people than logic says they have no money to make the payouts and that is what is really behind the absurdly long drawn out process it is taking for so many this year. I feel at the very least they should be paying interest to us, we would have to if we owed them money. To be more than halfway through 2017 and closer to the next filing year it seems ridiculous to me to take so long. And as with everything in our government today I have to question if they are actually short staffed- with no disrespect, but I have lost pretty much all trust & faith in anything government related.

My friend did not receive her State refund yet. She went to a certified accountant (for years she’s been using the same person). The person took her fee, did the paperwork, my friend got her Federal refund but as far as the State is concerned, she received a letter indicating that the IRS needed more info. She gave the letter to her accountant and was told “Call the IRS at one of these numbers, they want to speak to you”. She gave her quite a few numbers (as well as the main one)

My friend called the numbers on numerous occasions as well as the main one, but cannot reach a live person. She can’t get through to her accountant either. She is extremely anxious. She thinks she made have been ripped off. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks much

She just wants to know if she has any recourse if her accountant never replies by phone to her voicemails. This person took her money and then said “The IRS wants to talk to you, call them up”. This is possible? How can a person actually reach the IRS to find out what exactly is going on? Thanks much to anyone who can answer this question.

@StuckinStowewithnodough: they are short staffed and there’s no money in the budget to hire more people. It’s only going to get worse. Most of the same people that work amended returns, injured spouse, audits, referrals, etc. are the same people that answer the phone calls. The more people that call, the less time they have to work the above. When the phone queue slows down they can pull some people off the phone to get the other work done. Tax Advocates are overwhelmed with requests for help. It’s all a waiting game now. They’ll get to yours and everyone else’s who’s waiting….eventually. :(

Filed on January 24th-received 1st letter on April 20th was being ‘reviewed’-faxed everything they asked for and more- received letter they received it & they will be in touch by July 15 if they need more. Went through this 2 years ago- got a letter from them stating I was all set for 4 years, sent a copy of that letter with all other paperwork to them. Filed my VT State return also & still waiting on that, just get a message of ‘up to 12 weeks due to high volume” 12 weeks came & went long ago…All I have to say about both the federal & state level tax departments is they need to get their stuff together…in this day & age it should not take so long for ANYTHING to process or be ‘reviewed’- hire more employees, or ones that actually do the work quickly, efficiently- I have heard the same horror story from to many- if we owed them we could not take ‘up to 90 days’ or ’12 weeks’ with our hands over our butts to pay them…so damn frustrating. And you call, get an advocate & it’s the same story- anyone else ran their business this way they’d be out of business.

@WFAT- (Waiting For A long Time): do you know for a fact that he was entitled to refunds for both of those years or is he just telling you that? If they filed separately for 2016 maybe there was no refund due to him for that year. If they filed joint for 2015 and she filed injured spouse, once again it’s possible he wasn’t entitled to anything. It’s also possible that at the time there was no debt indicator on his account at the time his returns were filed so in that case there would be no offset and if he was entitled to a refund it would have gone to him. Do you believe what he tells you? Sounds like your wife has to contact the child support office to find out the real story. It shouldn’t take this long (at least for the 2015).

I have a question for the group. My wife’s ex-husband owes us back child support money. We went to the Mississippi child support office and they set him up for monthly deductions of child support. He still owes us many thousands of dollars. We were told that we would receive his tax refund money to help pay for what he still owes us in back child support payments. We received his state tax returns for the years 2015 and 2016. We have not received his federal tax refund for any year ever. We contacted Here’s what we know: My wife’s ex told us that he received a letter from the US Tresury that said his return would go to us and not him for back child support payment. The funds were set to be released according to the US treasury but then the funds were suddenly pulled back to be adjusted because his wife filed the injured spousal form. This all happened in August of 2016. Since then no funds have ever been released to us including including this year’s refund. Note, they filed separately for 2016. So to summarize, we have not received the ex’s 2015 and 2016’s federal tax refunds. (These refunds total around $6000 plus dollars). Has this happened to anyone? We were told that it could take up to 6 months for the funds to be released but it’s already been over a year and no one can tell us anything because it’s his return that’s in question and not hers.

The gentleman confirmed that my fax was received and I should hear back by July 1 but they’re 2 months behind and haven’t reviewed them yet. He said he can’t say whether it’ll be done by July 1 as the notice said. Smells like another delay to me. Do you agree

@Flipflop: Yes, I’m aware of that part and don’t have an issue with it. My audit began in March. Was sent a notice that they should be complete by July 1. My question is being that July 1 is next Saturday and I have yet to receive any additional notices should I expect to be delayed again

@Curi0us1: you’re getting close to that 90 day mark. I honestly think I would call them. At least they can at least see if theres an update on transcripts. This is so ridiculous. Same info same dependents. So sorry hun
