Where’s My Refund?

Where’s My Refund?

When does IRS accept tax returns in 2018?

The IRS has not announced the day it will open yet for 2018.  They began accepting and processing tax returns on January 23, 2017 for the prior year.

When Can You File Taxes in 2018?

Most tax preparers will allow you to enter and submit your tax return beginning the first week of January 2018.  You don’t need to wait for the IRS to start accepting tax returns to start, but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January and some even later.  When you submit your return before the IRS begins processing, it will sit in a “queue” and be held until the date that the IRS will officially accept tax returns.  If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early in a test batch. This has resulted in early direct deposits in the past, but also major glitches because they are tests after all.

Where is the IRS Refund Cycle Chart?

2018 Refund Cycle Chart

The most recent tax refund cycle charts have already been published. The official IRS tax refund cycle chart has been eliminated and replaced with an IRS Information Guidelines for the Tax Preparation Community publication. However, various websites with refund calendars for the 2018 tax season (2017 tax year) have been updated with 2018 direct deposit and check mailing dates.

When to Expect My Refund?

IRS Refund Schedule Charts typically show that early filers whose returns are accepted before the end of January can anticipate a tax refund direct deposit as early as the first week of February.  The day that IRS deposits refunds varies but we notice trends that help you determine the time and days WMR updates and when your tax return is processed.

The refund calendar by the College Investor is a good reference which has been updated for 2018 here:  When To Expect My Tax Refund.

I know this has been asked a million times, so I apologize. How do you know if you are weekly or daily?

I took a chance and called the offset line. I will be offset $60 this tax season from the Veterans Affairs. That would not put a dent in my refund.

@ms.. mine just says your return is still processing. A date will be given when available. No topic 152 but has refund amount on the side yet… No claiming any credits to hold it up..

@Robyn: I remember you from last year mess. I think we are weekly due to what happened last year. I was caught up in the 1095A as well. Filed Jan 24th but didn’t get refund until March 30th

Can the IRS tell which tax preparation software you’ve used? I switched it up this year after 15 years and don’t want to get flagged for some reason.

If you had to verify last year you might this year bit last year I got my account then lost my bars saying still processing and a date when available and updated that next Friday with return and sat with my approved second bar okay so just cause its happened doesn’t mean anything is wrong ! Also tax topic 152 does not mean anything besides how you chose to get your return it does not mean you are guaranteed one so 152 means nothing besides that just to clear that up for those thinking 152 tax topic actually means something major it does not !

FYI – 150 is GOOD – we just have to wait for 2/15
843 is EXCELLENT – Refund Issued
Use your knowledge of the IRS coding system to quickly determine which transaction codes belong to which family of codes. For example, if you are ordering your transcript because you believe the IRS neglected to send you the refund they owed you, then look for three-digit transaction codes beginning with 84X because this family of codes indicates a refund was issued. If you were assessed penalty for tax fraud or disallowed a credit due to fraud, search for codes beginning with 9XX because this family of code indicates an IRS criminal investigation. Similarly, codes beginning in 29X indicate a tax increase or decrease, codes beginning with 42X reference the initiation of an audit and codes beginning with 52X indicate a bankruptcy.
Decode your transcript. The system of family codes will help you understand your transcript, but some codes are stand-alone codes and are not included as part of that system. The following codes are the most common transaction codes that do not fall within the family of definitions previously outlined: A transaction code of 150 means a return was filed, 300 is tax assessed as the result of an audit, 320 is a fraud penalty, and transaction 460 is an approved extension of time to file.

So, I want to offer some sort of peace! If your bar disappeared and you have tax topic 152…I would not panic! Why? It has happened to quite a few of us and it was either a glitch OR they were working on that return. Missing a bar does not equal review, audit or ID theft. Of you filed earlier and you don’t see a change by the beginning of next week. Call, if you feel better, and then ask questions.

@Kristine w: I don’t know account transcript is available for all people under review. For me I wasn’t available until my error was fixed. I don’t it will be available since they still processing the return.

Okay guys help me out…all this review transcript talk has me concerned. So, last year I got caught up in the 1095a whole thing…Didn’t know I had, and had for one month the insurance. So I had to fax all the stuff, wait, wait, and more wait. Finally I got my refund in March. Filed Jan 25th or so. Now, I think I was a daily until then. I think I may have transitioned to weekly? Because I couldn’t order account trans till Friday, and still can’t order returns. So someone give me an idea of what that may mean for me… I do have ACTC and Education Credit. No EIC or anything else.

@Bridgett: When i called last week (Thursday) being proactive due to the prior year .. i was told the same thing just a flag and it would be there for a couple more yeas., was still processing and not to worry about it … then over the week end lost bar, topic and just processing. Called this afternoon and found out i was on holding process since Friday update due to ID verification. Now i know that i have to wait for the code from them before they will verify .. Word of warning .. don’t try to give them just any number .. = auto fail for verification .. record marked as Fraud .. Returns rejected .. and still have to take lots of documents to the local IRS office for face to face verification.

I’m hoping that they did send you a letter last Friday or Saturday instead of a resend dated today ..
