key tax return and refund dates
When can you file your taxes?
You can submit your tax return before the IRS begins processing as early as the first week of the year with many tax preparation providers. You don’t need to wait until the IRS begins accepting tax returns but you must have the proper forms and paperwork. Some forms are not available until mid January. Tax returns filed before the IRS officially opens sit in a âqueueâ and are held until the IRS officially begins accepting tax returns.
Your tax return may be selected in a test batch. If you e-file early and it sits in queue, your return may be sent to the IRS early. This can result in early direct deposits depending on the payment provider you select. Our cycle chart will update with key dates including test batch dates.
When does the IRS accept tax returns?
The IRS usually opens around the third week of January each year. They announce the opening date early in January.
The IRS began accepting tax returns this year on January 29, 2024.
When is the IRS test batch?
If you file your tax return early, it may be sent to the IRS in a test batch before the IRS has officially opened for the year. It is usually a week before the date the IRS begins accepting tax returns. This has resulted in refunds in the past that can be posted by direct deposit as early as the day after tax season opens.
When will I get my tax refund?
Early filers whose returns are accepted in a test batch can anticipate a tax refund as early as the day after the IRS opens the January filing season if your return was in the test batch. The day that the IRS deposits refunds varies for regular returns but we notice trends based on the method you chose to file and select to direct deposit. You can use our tax refund calendar or refund cycle chart to help find out when you will get your tax refund.
Where is the IRS refund cycle chart?
The official tax refund cycle chart published by the IRS has been eliminated and replaced with IRS FAQ. Refund cycle charts are now published by independent websites and vary slightly.
A good reference to use is the When To Expect My Refund cycle chart that is published early each year by the College Investor.

@Lastminute: accepted and approved is different. Accepted means that the IRS accepted your return for Processing. approval means you’re getting the money.

Filed 1/29. 570/971 dated 3/04 and 3/11. CP05 60 day wait letter on 3/11. Cycle 0704. I have not called – doing what they said and waiting 60 days. Am I alone?

Already received 2023 refund. At the same time that we filed 2023 we had also mailed in our 2022 return. They received it via mail and requested my husbands 1099. We sent that in and then I checked wmr and got thisâŚ. “We have reviewed your return and any information we may have requested from you and are now processing your return. Any changes to the status of your refund, including any new refund date, will be reflected here when any new update is available.” when should I expect an update as this has been the message for over a week now? Anyone else??

If you find error on your tax return is best to amend…or wait to see if fix it self…..I seen where people was saying to wait untill I get my refund but I think that error.is the reason I don’t have my refund…

Mine updated to amended return filed. As of date May 6. I sent my amended last week. So praying this goes by quick đđź

@Justnotsure: I think it has to do with an arbitrary date the IRS sets for itself to have an action or processing done. Mine has changed 3 times since I filed 1/23

what does As Of date mean exactly please? Im having trouble finding that in the information. Mine updated today to May 6.

Finally got 846 for apr 24th. I’m a 12/05 cycle, as of date changed from march 25 to apr 8 to apr 22 to may 6, filed Jan 19th. verified Feb 27.I had a 570 code dated apr 8. Had 570 since March 25, updated to a 290 and 846 on April 19th in the early AM.. not to mention the ID.ME IRS online for 2023 had a NA we are in the process of updating your account, these updates take at least 2 weeks to complete since last Saturday.. finally got my DDD. But it’s not over until people unite and show up at these government offices and make a change.. this government is a failure and together we need to stand up and stop them.. cause it’s just gonna get worse..

Oh OK thank you. How long is it usually after this that refunds are usually dd? Or is there no set time frame?
Also, does this mean I’ll have wait till next Friday before I’ll possibly see an update again since I’m weekly?
